Welcome to the picture of the day thread!
This is a copy of the original thread in the Art Lovers group.
We did this to have extra disk space to upload pictures to the group.

Every month I choose a theme and try to post as many different artists as there are days. (with the exception of last summer when I dedicated two whole months to one artist: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I won't reveal at first what the theme is so the first days it's a bit of a guessing game.

You are welcome to comment on the pictures posted, or on other people's comments, you can say whatever you want (keeping with the rules of the group of course).
The only rule to this thread is that the person running this thread can post a picture here.
So please don't post a picture in this thread. That's all!

Albert Bierstadt
1830 – 1902)

Albert Bierstadt was a German-American painter best known for his lavish, sweeping landscapes of the American West. He joined several journeys of the Westward Expansion to paint the scenes. He was not the first artist to record the sites, but he was the foremost painter of them for the remainder of the 19th century.
Bierstadt was born in Prussia, but his family moved to the United States when he was one year old. He returned to study painting for several years in Düsseldorf. He became part of the second generation of the Hudson River School in New York, an informal group of like-minded painters who started painting along the Hudson River. Their style was based on carefully detailed paintings with romantic, almost glowing lighting, sometimes called luminism. Bierstadt was an important interpreter of the western landscape, and he is also grouped with the Rocky Mountain School.

Pierre Billet
(1837 - 1922)

French painter and engraver.
Pierre Billet is the son of an industrialist established in Cantin. He gave up this activity to become a pupil of the painters Émile Breton and Jules Breton. He debuted at the Salon of French artists in 1868 where he presented genre scenes. He received a 3rd class medal in 1873 and 2nd class in 1874.

Winslow Homer

Winslow Homer was an American landscape painter and printmaker, best known for his marine subjects. He is considered one of the foremost painters in 19th-century America and a preeminent figure in American art. Largely self-taught, Homer began his career working as a commercial illustrator. He subsequently took up oil painting and produced major studio works characterized by the weight and density he exploited from the medium. He also worked extensively in watercolor, creating a fluid and prolific oeuvre, primarily chronicling his working vacations.

Jozef Israëls
(1824 – 1911)

Jozef Israëls was a Dutch painter. He was a leading member of the group of landscape painters referred to as the Hague School and, during his lifetime, "the most respected Dutch artist of the second half of the nineteenth century".

Nice. Yes, key phrase "DURING HIS LIFETIME". I think we all know a certain someone who is a little more respected now.

The painting depicts grief with the stooped, dark figures and gray clouds. Even before I noticed the title, and the drowned man, I had the feeling that someone had died. Very nice.

The composition supports the painting's emotional thrust. The grieving are trapped by the tight walls and low ceiling. The illumination of the dead fisherman's face suggests that he is at peace.

Philip Sadee
(1837–1904)

Philip Lodewijk Jacob Frederik Sadée (7 February 1837 The Hague – 14 December 1904 The Hague) was an artist who belonged to the Hague School.
Sadée started painting at the age of 20. He studied in The Hague both at the Academy and in the studio of J E J van den Berg (1802–1861). In 1866, with his fellow student Julius van de Sande Bakhuyzen, Sadée travelled to Düsseldorf where he studied for some months. He began painting biblical scenes and history paintings, later focusing on daily life. He came into contact with the fisherman's life while in Scheveningen. He was fascinated by and found inspiration in the beach and the dunes. Bright colors are typical of Sadée's paintings.

Hendrik Willem Mesdag
(1831 – 1915)

Hendrik Willem Mesdag was a Dutch marine painter. He was born in Groningen, the son of the banker Klaas Mesdag and his wife Johanna Wilhelmina van Giffen. Mesdag was encouraged by his father, an amateur painter, to study art. He married Sina van Houten in 1856, and when they inherited a fortune from her father, Mesdag retired from banking at the age of 35 to pursue a career as a painter.
He studied in Brussels with Willem Roelofs and in 1868 moved to The Hague to paint the sea. In 1870 he exhibited at the Paris Salon and won the gold medal for The Breakers of the North Sea.

Interesting. I certainly don't think of landscapes when I think about Manet. The brushwork in the sky is odd.

And you're right: those clouds don't look natural.

Just because you mentioned The Scream, I wanted to mention that I had ordered a mask online of The Scream. So I have the face of the person in The Scream right over my mouth. It's comical!

I'm sorry I've been away and haven't made any comments here or in the other group, but since there have been the comments here that I wanted to respond to, I will post my additional responses here...

I really like this theme and I also appreciate and like Homer very much.

I agree, Connie. But I wouldn't have put that together like you did. I guess I'm not as observant as to have supposed someone had died by the gravity of the rest of the painting. But you're absolutely right on in the way you described it.

I agree with you, Brian on the composition of the painting with the tight walls, lower ceiling surrounding the people who are also surrounding the dead man. But I don't think he looks "at peace". To me, he just looks dead. Just my observation. lol

Yes, I agree with both Dirk and Brian about the Manet. His brushwork on the sky Is odd. It almost looks like he doesn't know how to paint. Which we all know that isn't true.

Fishermen at Sea, sometimes known as the Cholmeley Sea Piece, is an early oil painting by English artist J. M. W. Turner. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1796 and has been owned by the Tate Gallery since 1972. It was the first painting by Turner to be exhibited at the Royal Academy. It was praised by contemporary critics and founded Turner's reputation, as both an oil painter and a painter of maritime scenes. Benjamin West
(1738 – 1820)

Benjamin West PRA was an American-born artist, who painted famous historical scenes such as The Death of Nelson, The Death of General Wolfe, and Benjamin Franklin Drawing Electricity from the Sky.
Entirely self-taught, West soon gained valuable patronage, and he toured Europe, eventually settling in London. He impressed George III and was largely responsible for the launch of the Royal Academy, of which he became the second president (after Sir Joshua Reynolds). He was appointed historical painter to the court and Surveyor of the King's Pictures.
West also painted religious subjects, as in his huge work The Preservation of St Paul after a Shipwreck at Malta, at the Chapel of St Peter and St Paul in Greenwich, and Christ Healing the Sick, presented to the National Gallery.

Thomas Eakins
(1844 – 1916)


Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins was an American realist painter, photographer, sculptor, and fine arts educator. He is widely acknowledged to be one of the most important American artists.
For the length of his professional career, from the early 1870s until his health began to fail some 40 years later, Eakins worked exactingly from life, choosing as his subject the people of his hometown of Philadelphia. He painted several hundred portraits, usually of friends, family members, or prominent people in the arts, sciences, medicine, and clergy. Taken en masse, the portraits offer an overview of the intellectual life of contemporary Philadelphia; individually, they are incisive depictions of thinking persons.
In addition, Eakins produced a number of large paintings that brought the portrait out of the drawing room and into the offices, streets, parks, rivers, arenas, and surgical amphitheaters of his city. These active outdoor venues allowed him to paint the subject that most inspired him: the nude or lightly clad figure in motion. In the process, he could model the forms of the body in full sunlight, and create images of deep space utilizing his studies in perspective. Eakins also took a keen interest in the new technologies of motion photography, a field in which he is now seen as an innovator.

Franklin Brownell
(1857 – 1946)

Franklin Brownell RCA born in New Bedford, Massachusetts was a landscape painter, draughtsman and teacher active in Canada.
Brownell studied at the Boston Tufts School of the Museum of Fine Arts in 1879 and at the Académie Julian in Paris from 1880 to 1883 under William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Tony Robert-Fleury and Léon Bonnat. There he met fellow expatriate and Canadian painter William Brymner. After spending some time in Montreal, Brownell moved to Ottawa in 1886 to take up the position of Headmaster of the Ottawa School of Art until 1900. He accepted the same position as headmaster between 1900 and 1937 with the Women's Art Association in Ottawa, later renamed the Art Association of Ottawa. Among his students were Pegi Nicol MacLeod, Henri Masson and Robert Tait McKenzie.

Désiré Thomassin was an Austrian painter and composer.

After completing his studies, Thomassin worked in various positions as a music teacher until 1883. Thomassin saw himself primarily as a composer. Despite some recognition in this area, he could not support his family with it. Therefore he switched to painting.

The focus of Thomassin's work was peasant genre scenes, coastal landscapes and winter ice landscapes in finely graduated mood paintings. He leaned heavily on Diez's naturalistic style. Thomassin was close to the Dachau artists' colony and was a member of the Reich Association of German Artists.

As a composer, Désiré Thomassin only became known to a wider public from around 1908. Felix Mottl is commonly cited as an essential pioneer of this late and sudden discovery by Thomassin. From 1908 onwards, Thomassin's works were played a lot in German-speaking countries and received good reviews. Désiré Thomassin dedicated his violin concerto to the famous violinist Felix Berber, who also premiered it.
