She discussed how she her parents abandoned her and her brother at young ages. Mya is very insecure with herself. Maya discusses how her brother would defend her when people talk about her. She discusses the day-to-day racism that her and her brother faced. She also talks about how she was sexually by Mr. Freeman but she was scared to say because she didn’t want anything bad to happen. The book is touches base on so many other struggles that Maya and her brother faced as they were growing up.

I would rate the book a 5 because I loved it. It’s amazing how Maya and her brother were able to not fold under all the pressure they had on them. It’s sad to see that segregation and racism was something that had been happening only a few years ago. I loved how Maya gave us all the details of her youth and didn’t make it seem like her childhood was perfect. Maya Angelou is just an amazing writer.
