GabsAboutBooks Hello Readathoners! For this pre-readathon challenge we've created a fun board game! It is open to start playing right now until the end of Dewey's on April 24th. You can play 1 of two ways...either by yourself or against other fellow readathoners. We will create small groups here on GR where you can play against each other. The first to the finish line is the winner! Of course we encourage everyone to finish the game. If you would like to play in a group all you need to do is send me a message.

You can post here in this threat or you're welcome to create your own under the "pre-readathon board game folder"!

The instructions to play are on the board game in the link below.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/15Y8F...

I hope everyone enjoys playing! GOOD LUCK!

**UPDATE**
We’ve decided to extend the board game until the end of the readathon! That way you can use the pages you read during the readathon towards the space challenges!

Also I want to clarify the instructions: If you land on a space that says to read a book like a fantasy, classic, audiobook, etc you can just read half the book for it to count. If the challenge is specific and says to read a specific number of pages or read a certain amount of hours (i.e. read 50 pages or read for 2 hours) then it can be achieved through reading multiple books and it doesn’t have to be all at once.

Lastly, I’m adding a free roll to the game! If you roll on a space that you don’t want to complete (i.e. you’ve already landed on that space or you don’t have any audiobooks) then you can just ignore that space and re-roll or choose a challenge on the board you do like and complete that!

Hope this helps with any confusion!

If we are playing a round alone, we create our own topic in this folder for our game, right?

Do we post here or create our own thread?

Erica ♋️✨ | 1 comments So if we’re playing by ourselves do we have to create a post and say what challenge we’re doing and what we’re reading? Or can we just do it on our own?

message 7: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (thelittlebookishnerd) | 265 comments I just reread the rules and I have a question about the "*You must read half the book for the challenge to be considered completed". Is the "challenge" the square or the whole board? My first roll was 1 which is 50 pages. But the book I was going to use for the next square (fav genre) has less than half left. So I would need to start a new book?

message 8: by Elley (new)

Elley Murray (elleyotter) | 5 comments What of we land on a space twice? so if I read a classic, then get sent back to the beginning, then land on it again... I have to read another classic? I... foresee reading more than 500 pages before getting to the end of the board, lol

You can do it on your own. Some people like to track it so they can create a post for that purpose

Hi Stephanie -
Yes, the minimum is half of a book, give or take a few pages, per a square. Keep in mind that you have a month and a half, so there isn't a huge rush. For page specific squares (like read 50 pages) you only have to do that many pages and not the half the book.

message 12: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) Elley wrote: "What of we land on a space twice? so if I read a classic, then get sent back to the beginning, then land on it again... I have to read another classic? I... foresee reading more than 500 pages befo..."

Yes, you would have to do that... lol Maybe find a really short classic.

Also... ducks to avoid angry book throwing... the final square is 500 pages to complete the board. So once you get to the end, you have to read 500 more pages (of anything you want) to complete the game.

Again, keep in mind that this challenge goes on for a month and a half! You don't need to complete it in a week or anything like that.

Yes sorry that’s a little confusing! If the space says to read a specific book like a fantasy or classic or an audiobook then you can just read half for it to count. If the challenge is just to read 50 pages then it can be in read through multiple books and doesn’t have to be all at once! Thank you for your question and I will update the instructions.

Unfortunately yes read another classic but I’m going to add two more rules that you can have 1 freebie so if you landed on classic twice you can just ignore it and roll again!

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 566 comments This is great. I love it! I'm playing against my Youngest who loves board games even more than he loves Bingo. And he is feeling really competitive! I had to caution him that we're not meant to finish the whole board in one day.

This is just what we needed right now. I'm not going to start a thread with every square either of us complete, but I'll be sure to check back in her and let you all know when he has soundly beaten me. lol

message 28: by Alicia (new)

Alicia (readersbeadvised) It's five days in and I'm on my fourth book. I've read The Life I'm In for the "read 50 pages and jump ahead"- though I did finish the whole book. Next I read Eat a Peach as a "read in our favorite genre". I rolled "read a book in third person" and finished Mighty Justice (Young Readers' Edition): The Untold Story of Civil Rights Trailblazer Dovey Johnson Roundtree. Now I'm on to a "read a book with a movie adaptation" and am reading a book that's been on my TBR *forever* Slumdog Millionaire.

message 29: by T. (new)

T. Hampton | 30 comments I've got my highly competitive boys participating with me on this! Even my non-reader won't put his book down! So far, I am losing badly. Maybe I shouldn't have loosened the requirements for them after all!

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 281 comments I'm also really enjoying the board game and finding it very motivating! Even though I'm not playing directly against anyone, my competitive nature has me watching how far everyone is along the board and trying to beat them, lol.

I'm just about halfway across the board (I'm on "read a book with diversity"), and have read two full graphic novels, plus 100 pages from a couple other books, and am on my third full book.

I saw this and wanted to take part but then forgot about it. I'm reading a lot for other challenges at the moment so I still think I'll be able to finish before the Read-a-Thon. Of course depending on the spaces I land on.

For the “read any book” can I read half or does that have to be a whole book? :)

All squares have to be at least 50% of the book (unless pages or hours read is specified) unless you play on "difficult mode" in which case you complete a whole book for each square (unless pages or hours read is specified).

message 38: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 566 comments My Youngest has completed to board! I am on the last square with another 200 and something pages left to read. The best thing is that the Youngest has agreed to play again once I complete the game, and this time the Spouse will join us too. :D

Rachel F (rachelbookdragon) | 11 comments I will need to try and add my board game rolls via the main goodreads site as it won’t let me add as a separate topic on here

Raquel (Silver Valkyrie Reads) I joined over on Instagram, but have made zero progress because my first roll was for 'read a contemporary' and that's NOT a go-to genre for me, especially when I'm a bit slumpy to start with like right now. I just ran across this thread and the 'free roll' rule, and I think it's time for me to take advantage of that! (If I roll something better, I'll go back to what I've read since the challenge started and fill in anything that counts.)

Jane | 13 comments Jane's PRE Read-a-Thon challenge

I was actually moving forward at a very good space and was just a few place from finishing when I of course hit "So close! Move back"

and my second roll after that was an audiobook. It is at least a couple of years since I last listened to an audiobook.
Today I chose a short story: Lyra's Oxford by Philip Pullman which was quite short.

and I'm ready to move on again. I've just landed on "Read a Scifi / fantasy" for the third time which is great as fantasy is one of my favourite genres.

Alternatively you could interpret the square as "read a contemporary (book or author)". In which case you just need to find an author who is your contemporary and writes in whichever genre you want to read. ;)
