Cynthia | 186 comments There is actually a movie coming out starring Russell Crowe called The Water Diviner: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3007512/

From what I recall it's based off a true story and after a quick search there are some books about it like;

The Water Diviner by Andrew Anastasios

Tourmaline by Randolph Stow?

Gill, around what year did you read this book?
What's the time period of the story?

Btw, here are some related terms that may help -- water... diviner/divining, dowser/dowsing, witch/witching, finder/finding, seeker/seeking.

First paragraph:
Gunner Fitch arrived at Croppdale with his new wife and left her alone for the day, headed away from the road, across the dry river and up into the hills on foot, with only a limping black dog for company. He carried a canvas knapsack holding a long-handled tin torch, a Vest Pocket Kodak camera, corned beef sandwiches, a bottle of cold milky tea, wax matches, and a packet of gelignite and fuses.
