Awesome Cheryl! :D
Also, I put together a more "traditional" representation of a BINGO card in Google sheets. Feel free to download (or copy it) if you like!

Nice, Jayme! I'm really looking forward to seeing what people will choose for these tasks.
You'll need to swap your G2 and O2 though, since the O2 should be the standard task of "HF by a new to you author".
Please make a scoring thread to track your progress. :)

As much as I'd love to allow such clever planning, it is one book per task & one task per book. Sorry!

I though that would the case. I’ve got a manic few months coming up at work, so can’t commit to a big challenge but will spectate on others with great enjoyment 😊
Carol, you can participate as much or as little as you like. There's no requirement to finish a card or anything. Just have fun reading according to the prompts you choose and see what you can do. :)
Nancy wrote: "What is a “POC Author”???"
Person of color, so a book written by someone not white, essentially.

I think it means "did not finish".

Total newbie here, in case you couldn't guess!
Thanks.

ETA: I have participated in book bingos before, but have never had to make my own card. It's more than fine if I have to pick my own prompts. :)
No, the books do NOT need to be selected ahead of time, though you definitely can if you want to preplan and maximize points and bonuses (which is easier if you know what you'll be reading).
Only the tasks that make the card are required to be locked in by March 31.
You'll make your own cards in the form of the task list, though I did create a Google sheets template if you wanted to track that way (please just make sure you make a copy, THEN edit!)
DNF does indeed mean did not finish, so that task is for a book you want to try again on.

No problem, Tiffany! I figure this way gives you the most flexibility to arrange the cards around your reading and make it doable.
Let me know if you have any other questions as you go along. :)

Hi Barbara - for this challenge, you just need to create a thread and put together your task list. Keep in mind that the Standard tasks will be the same and in the same locations for everyone, but otherwise you'll just pick the prompts that you want to read books for and plug them in where you want in the remaining spaces.

Hi Barbara - for this challenge, you just need to create a thread and put together your task list. Keep in mind that the Standard tasks will be the same and in the same locations for everyone, but otherwise you'll just pick the prompts that you want to read books for and plug them in where you want in the remaining spaces.

A few questions regarding some of the possible tasks:
1) What is "Judge a book by its cover"?
2) For "Titular Woman with her Own Identity (IE: Not "_____'s Daughter" or "_____'s Wife" etc)", would "Mrs. ___" be acceptable? (Examples: Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker, The First Mrs. Rothschild, or The Elusive Mrs. Pollifax)
3) What is "All the single ladies"?
Julia, really they are all up to you, however you interpret them.
Judge a book - pick a book based on the cover. You can pick it because or despite the cover... Whichever floats your boat.
Titular woman - Sure, that's up to you. I think "Mrs" can go either way, depending on personal preference. To me, it's more like the woman's identity is based on being the wife of someone, but that's just my opinion, as a married woman but not a Mrs. LOL
Anyway, you can certainly use one of those if you like. :)
All the single ladies is again based on interpretation. You can choose a book about a woman who is literally single, ie not married/in a relationship, or interpret it in another way - a woman who is one of a kind, a pioneer at something, etc.
I purposefully didn't make them specific because I want to see what people think of. :)

Thanks for the prompt reply!
I participate in a challenge group where the moderators or task creators can rule that a book doesn't fit the description (or intent) of a given task, so I was in that mindset. It sounds like this is more flexible and up to the reader to decide if something fits.
Given that, in relation to the title characters identified as "Mrs", I would probably say that Mrs Pollifax fits (she's a widow and I don't think there are any flashbacks to her marriage, so that's just her name from a time where it was more automatic that the wife would take her husband's name) but the other two don't fit because the character's importance is because of who her husband is/was.
Hmm. Since we're being flexible, maybe I'll say Mrs Rothschild is Religion. (The description sounds like Judaism is an important part of the story.)

Tiffany wrote: "For the adapted to movie, does that mean actual movies or can it apply to television series? I mean, I have a lot of historical fiction books that have been adapted into movies, but am wondering if..."
Sure. Movie, TV series, miniseries, I'll say they are all good.
Sure. Movie, TV series, miniseries, I'll say they are all good.

Now, I have to pick the perfect book for this prompt. There are so many HF books that have been turned into film adaptions... including classic historical fiction.
Do you have your reading list figured out, yet? :)
No problemo! That's why this thread is here! :)
Not quite yet, but I'm working on it. I think I have the prompts set but the books will likely change along the way. I love the planning part though. So fun!

Andrea wrote: "Each of these need to be complete DURING time time frame, correct? Are there any prizes, or just a general challenge?"
Yes, the goal is to read as many as possible between April and the end of June, but no, there's no prize other than a (maybe) diminished TBR, a sense of accomplishment and our shared enjoyment of the experience. :D

Right now I am having difficulty with choosing a book for historical fiction mystery. I have so many unread books by authors that write murder mysteries within the historical fiction genre, and they are all so great. For example, Michael Jecks, Bernard Knight, Susanna Gregory, and more. This is one of my favourite thing to read so I have a lot of books to go through and select.
Some of the books were easy selections for me. The book that was on my TBR the longest, the book that was published between 2010-2020... that sort of thing.
I completely understand! That's the fun of this planning period... weeding through our TBRs and figuring out what calls to us the most. :)

I'm not locking threads. You'll be able to edit your posts throughout, to add or change books, mark tasks complete, update points & bonuses etc.
I trust you all to play by the rules and not change the tasks after the cut-off. It's all based on the honor system, but in the end, it's a fun challenge, not work, so I'm not trying to make it too strict or rigid... or hard on myself either! :D

Becky; Thanks! Yep, best to make it easy :)

1) Does claiming the FREE space require reading a book?
I think it means I do need to read a book but it doesn't have to fit any of the prompts, but I wasn't sure. Is that right?
2) The bonuses say:
- Complete all of one number = 3 bonus points.
Example: B1, I1, N1, G1, O1
and
- Complete the word Bingo = 5 bonus points.
Example: B1, I1, N3, G4, O2
All of one number also spells Bingo, so would that be 8 points? (5 for BINGO and additional 3 because they are all in the same row)
Similarly,
- Complete all of the Standard tasks = 10 bonus points.
Example: B1, I3, N5, G4, O2
This also spells BINGO - is it 10 points or 10 for the specific tasks and additional 5 because BINGO?
Sorry if I'm being too nit-picky.

Pamela wrote: "I realize this is probably a stupid question... but how do I edit the thread? I want to add the book titles but have never done this and can't figure out how to edit. Thank you!"
It depends on how you are using Goodreads. If you are using the app, you cannot edit your comments. You can only add new ones. You have to use a desktop version of Goodreads to be able to edit your existing threads and comments.

Hey Julia, yes - The center card location is FREE, as in usual BINGO rules, meaning you can read any book you like for this spot. :)

Yep! You got it. :)
Edit to clarify, since I just realized you were asking an "or" question not a "confirm" question. LOL
YES, you can combine the bonuses, so you would get the BINGO bonus for finishing one of each letter, plus the Standard Task bonus. :)

With the spring comes life! And with life… comes BINGO. :P
This challenge will run from April 1 to June 30th. The two weeks between now and March 31st will be for task selection, book selection, meditation, arranging baby/pet/spouse sitters, cleaners, and food preppers, etc. Whatever preparation you need. :P
General Rules:
1) Each person will have a BINGO "card" consisting of 25 tasks to be completed.
- There are five (5) standard tasks that will be pre-selected for everyone's Bingo card, in the same locations. These are the tasks that will be in spaces: B1, I3, N5, G4, O2. These are specified and bolded in the list below, and each marked with the location of the task for your card.
- The center card location is FREE, as in usual BINGO rules, meaning you can read any book you like for this spot.
2) Each participant will fill in the remaining 19 spots with the tasks of their choice, in any configuration you like. Once these are locked in, this is the card you will play for the remainder of the challenge, so choose wisely!
3) Books must be at least 200 pages (according to the most popular edition on Goodreads). Audiobooks are permitted. Graphic novels are permitted for any task as long as they meet the page count and task requirement.
4) There's no genre requirement, though the tasks have been guided a little toward history themes, as that's what we read in this group. You can use any book that fits a task requirement.
Reminder: If a task is specified to be HF, we consider that to be a book that is set 50 years or more prior to when it was written. IE: A book published today would need to be set prior to 1971 to be counted.
Unless specified that a real historical person is required for the task, a "HF" book can be HF or period fiction. (Period fiction is simply set in a historic timeframe, with entirely fictional characters.)
5) Books must be started on or after April 1st to be counted for the challenge.
6) Create a thread in the 2021 Bingo Challenge folder to track your progress. :)
Scoring Rules:
1) The number associated with the letter is the score for that book. So, if I read the book associated with B1, my score for that book would be 1 point. Reading the I3 task would be 3 points, and my total would be 4 points. Etc. Feel free to arrange your card so that you maximize points!
2) Bingo bonuses:
- Complete 5 tasks in any order = 1 bonus point.
Example: B2, I1, N3, G2, O5
- Complete all of one letter = 2 bonus points.
Example: B1, B2, B3, B4, B5
- Complete all of one number = 3 bonus points.
Example: B1, I1, N1, G1, O1
- Complete a "diagonal" bingo = 4 bonus points.
Example: B1, I2, N3, G4, O5
- Complete the word Bingo = 5 bonus points.
Example: B1, I1, N3, G4, O2
- Complete all of the Standard tasks = 10 bonus points.
Example: B1, I3, N5, G4, O2
- Complete your entire card = 50 bonus points.
3) Bingo bonus points would be added to the task scores as completed. There are no limits to the number of Bingo combinations you can get. For instance, if you finish all the B tasks, you would earn 1 bonus point for completing 5 tasks, AND you'd get a 3 point bonus for the letter bingo, plus all of the individual book scores. If you then read I1N1G1O1, you get another bingo, worth 4 points. One more book, would be another 1 point bingo.
This is a self-scoring challenge, so I'll be available to answer questions, help with scoring calculation (if needed), provide recommendations, should you want them, or help with tasks, but you will be scoring your own challenges. :) Questions should be asked in this thread, and points should be tracked in your own thread, though you're more than welcome to post updates here as well.
General Set-up:
The cards are configured, B-I-N-G-O across, and 1-2-3-4-5 down, as in standard Bingo. When listing them in your thread post, a card would look like this example:
