Many of us don't start a series until it's been complete, and some can't wait to start the hyped series or the one from their fav author.
What do you do?

Do you continue a series whose first book didn't impress you? Are you not a fan of cliffhangers and prefer reading a series in one go?

Do you tend to pick up a series because of it's hype?
How hard do you work to avoid the hype and spoilers?

Fabitha (fabitha89) | 575 comments Usually I read the first and then cry desperately because I have to wait for the next despite knowing it was a serie lol and I usually continue it - unless it was really terrible. But there have been cases when I couldn't finish the second book (sorry, Shadowshapers)

I try to avoid spoilers, and I want to make an official petition for publishers to stop put in the blurb for the second book how the first ended. Please? (I'm looking at you, Girls of Storm and Shadow!)

Also, I like rereadings so it doesn't really bother me to wait. There are lots of good books so I'm never really short!

I definitely agree with the point that the blurbs of other books in the series are major spoilers!! How can one control themselves from reading the blurb? It just spoils the whole suspense( if there's any in the series)
Good point Fabi! ☺️

Austin George | 471 comments I kinda prefer standalone novels actually. I am into many series but most of the books in those series can be read as standalone novels and can be read in any order. The only exception being Harry Potter and Millennium series which needs to be read in an order.

If I don't like the first book, then most likely I won't continue.

I don't read a series in one go. Like to take lengthy breaks between books within the series.

Generally I ignore the hype. Harry Potter and the Millennium series were an exception though.

I apologise for my strange reading habits. Haha

nαомι αndιno (nndno) | 393 comments If I start a series, I have to finish reading it or die trying, even if I didn't like it that much. If I don't I get really anxious idk why :(

I also prefer reading series that are already finished because I hate waiting but sometimes I read series in progress as well.

I don't mind spoilers when their about tv shows but I HATE BOOK SPOILERS!

Erica | 1309 comments I read a lot of series predominately from the beginning and in order. I usually continue a series if the character and world building is interesting. Any series can have dud books that set up a better book later. I often look at what other people are reading and give things a shot because of hype. I usually don't read the descriptions for books if they aren't the first in a series to avoid spoiling.
If you wait until a series is complete to read it, you can't be assured the author will get the sales to continue a series. Sometimes the fact that you have to wait so long for the next book in a series can make it that much more special of a reading experience.

This is exactly what I do when I start a series- I read whatever is out already, cry that I have to wait for the next one, and suffer as I become too attached to the world building, characters, and relationships. Sometimes if the book takes too long to come out, I casually forget everything and randomly start a new series.

I used to be very picky, like when I started a series I would only start a new one after the old one has been finished.
But now I'm not as picky because the series I need to complete are really popular and it takes me a while to get them at the library. So I have a bunch of series I need to finish lol.

Yes, I continue a series when a first book doesn't impress me. I try to be an optimist and hope it gets better.

I love cliffhangers and I hate them. I love that they make we want to read more but I hate that I have to wait lol.

Yes, I usually read a lot of underrated books, but now I pick up hyped books if I hear good things from my friends.

I like being in the hype if I've read the book. If I have not read the book, I try to keep away from discussions to avoid spoilers.

toointofiction | 186 comments If I start a series that is completed then I read all the books in one go (I just can't help myslef). If it's a new series then I slowly die until it's finished.

If I don't like the first book I might still finish the series depending on how many books are in it and how big the books are.

Also, I am a fan of cliffhangers provided they are well written (but I much prefer to read all the books in a series in one go).

I often choose the series I'm reading based on their hype or if I like the author. Sometimes I might even stumble upon them by chance.

I work really hard not to spoil myself otherwise I can't focus on finishing the series.

Hmmmm, interesting...I usually read the duologies in one go and if the series isn't finished yet, I wait until they come out and read the next book a few months after it has come out. If the whole series is out, I try and read all the books in one go but I sometimes can't be asked. Hehe.

Shawna Finnigan (sugoishawn) | 945 comments I'm a mood reader so how I approach series depends on my mood. Sometimes I want to binge a series and sometimes I want savor the series so I spread out when I read the books

message 12: by Orla (new)

Orla (orla_27) I definitely binge series. It's kind of difficult because I get most of my books from the library, so I have to wait until my books are ready. But it's hard for me to pick up on another series if I haven't finished the other one yet. I also tend to finish series even if it isn't great writing because I find it really hard not to finish books. I haven't dnf-ed a book so far. Also hate reading spoilers, but I usually self-sabotage by reading other people's reviews. 😕

Gouri Verma (gouriverma) Most of the times I read the first book but sometimes I start from from the second one😊
