Spring Sayings From Around the World

Start date: April 1, 2021

1. English – “April showers bring May flowers.”
In England, this phrase is spouted to encourage positive spirits despite the sometimes cumbersome British weather. The rain may pour now, but it will make everything look even more beautiful later. Read a book with a HEA (happily ever after) or HFN (happy for now) ending.

2. German –“April, April, it does whatever it wants”.
This lament on the unpredictable April weather tells us all we can do is accept its volatile attitude until the month is over. Be prepared for sun, rain, cloud and whatever else April fancies this year. Read a mystery where the MC investigates despite objections from police/law enforcement.

3. French –“In April, don’t remove a thread.”
Keep your Spring fever at bay for a while before you cast aside your warm winter clothing in favor of that floral dress. Read a book with a fashion theme or with articles of clothing on the cover.

4. Spanish – “Until the 40th May, do not take your coat off.”
This saying also shares wardrobe warnings and encourages a dose of restraint, despite the sunshine coming out to fool you that the sunny season has arrived. Don't rely on summer weather being a constant until June. Read a book where someone is fooled, or where someone is framed or wrongly accused.

5. Portuguese – “In April, there are a thousand waters.”
Though the sunny Springtime is said to start, April in Portugal is often filled with endless heavy rain showers, as if countless rivers, lakes, oceans were pouring from the sky. Read a book with a river, lake or ocean on the cover OR with a significant weather event (ex: flood, hurricane, storm, heat wave).

6. Italian – “Spring is the season of love.”
Considered one of the most glorious seasons in Italy, Spring brings bees to blossoming trees and longer, warmer days. Read a book with an MC who is in a romantic relationship, i.e., has a spouse or significant other.

7. Dutch – “A new spring, a new sound.”
This Dutch idiom calls us to take advantage of fresh opportunities and the novelties of life. The season offers its own uniqueness – animals that haven’t existed before, sounds of different bird flocks and the chance for new flowers to grow. Read a book where the MC does something new (ex: takes a job, moves to a new home, starts a business).

8. Arabic – “The Springtime beats its drums.”
Spring always lets us know when it has arrived. You start to hear the birds and the bees and begin to enjoy afternoon walks. This saying humanizes Spring as a musical being that rouses us and calls for our attention. Read a book with a scene where music is performed OR where the MC eavesdrops and overhears a significant clue. (Do not tell us what it is!)

9. Japanese – “Half an hour in a spring evening is worth a thousand gold pieces.”
Spring evenings seem to place a fire under the sky, lighting it up with pinks, purples and gold. This Japanese expression describes how these small moments of beauty will always be more valuable than any material object. Read a book with sky on the cover (at least 25%) OR read a book with a cover that is pink, purple or gold (at least 50%).

10. Russian –“A kind word is like a spring day.”
Just as Spring coaxes out new flowers with gentle sunlight, warm-hearted compliments and pleasant words could blossom delightful new relationships with others. Read a book where MC has a new relationship (ex: new friendship, new romance, new family member).

11. Mandarin – “In spring there are orchids, in autumn there are chrysanthemums.”
Unlike other idioms about Spring, this reminds us of the innate beauty of every season. The face of each season is embellished with it’s own features, so let yourself be grateful for it all. Read a book set during Spring or Autumn.

12. Korean – “The cold envies the flower.”
Spring is the season in which the winter wants to stay but it knows it must go. It is jealous of the flower’s pretty petals because they announce the passing of time into a warmer climate, full with beauty and life. Read a book with flowers on the cover OR read a book where a character acts out of jealousy.

Read a book with sky on the cover (at least 25%) OR read a book with a cover that is pink, purple or gold (at least 50%).
