Samantha (scookie) | 46 comments Hi everyone,

So I'm sharing the story of how I landed a publishing deal for my YA fantasy book, THE CLEARING. It's publishing later this year with Evernight Teen.

My Rejection Story: https://youtu.be/H3_BQpiOwXg

I'm sharing this because I've read so many success stories which make publishing seem easy...Quite frankly, I found most of them a real bummer and impossible to relate. Instead, here's my long, arduous journey and all the things I learned along the way.

For any unpublished authors, there's also information about a free mentoring scheme that helped me - it could help you too!

Best of luck with your writing,
Sam

Thank you for sharing your story. Like many authors, I found the hype versus the reality to be quite different.

After a few years of hearing great feedback from beta readers and rejections from agents, I finally decided to self-publish. I will publish my second book in a few months, and the third by next winter.

I never considered a direct to publisher approach, but your perseverance is inspirational.

Great work and all the best of blessings for your book.

Christopher Taylor (christophertaylor) | 112 comments Publishing is brutal to get done, but if you can do it without an agent, you're going to be better off for it -- IF you know what you are doing, and do it right. Otherwise the publishers will rip you off and take advantage of you significantly worse than if you'd had an agent.

I mean, there was a scandal a while back where it was discovered that sales were significantly higher than publishers were reporting to authors and they owed quite a bit of back pay.

I have a question: was all the effort worth the results?

Robert Drews | 96 comments Congratulations on landing the publisher, Rumpel. I think having a publisher helps in getting a book circulated. Book stores often won't touch self-published authors, and the publishers also may have marketing devices and strategies.

Stay safe, and God bless.

Jim Vuksic | 1227 comments Samantha,

Legitimate well-established publishers provide production, distribution, marketing, promotion, ISBN, and copyright services to authors. No agent required.

Hopefully, you read the publisher's contract carefully before you signed. Although the majority of publishers are legitimate and honest, as in all aspects of life, there are some that are not.

I wish you success.
