I enjoyed the writing and the build-up in this book. The twists were predictable, but I don't mind, the only surprising twist was the fake murder performance. I don't understand the plan? They kidnapped the women, scare them by stabbing them with a fake knife and then what? What was the plan?

I had a love/meh relationship with the book. I loved it while I was reading it but once I put it down I had a hard time motivating myself to pick it back up again. Though this could just be because I'm in a slump right now (thanks House of Leaves).
I did find the twists were predictable (besides the cult, didn't see that coming) but I'm not mad about it. Bruce was a creep and so were his friends.
This was the first book I read from Peter Swanson and would be open to reading more in the future.
Overall I gave the book 4 stars.

I am SOOOOOO tired of thrillers where the whole thing is just "the husband is abusive" or "the men hate women." Because I thought that's where this was going, I was eager to see if it was something else instead. Now I know it's not, and I'm just rolling my eyes at every other sentence.
I'm gonna go read Night of the Mannequins now, which I assume I will enjoy much more.

I liked the build-up fine, I liked the references to movie classics just fine, I did not like the "twist." It just feels so cheap and boring to me. The pay-off is not worth it.
I'll probably give it 1.5 stars? It was a solid 3 or 3.5 until around chapter 21 because I kept thinking that surely there would be more to this than "an island of men who hate and punish women" and then that's what it was and I never got over it.

The most predictable element of this book to me was "Scottie" being hired to test Abigail's loyalty at her bachelorette party. Like, come on, we know that Bruce has trust issues from the get-go. Nothing too shocking from my POV.
I liked the ending, but didn't love it. A lot of things were left unexplained, and it all felt a bit chaotic and rushed.
I've read The Kind Worth Killing and gave it 4 stars. I'm still open to reading a few of Swanson's other books in the future.

The first 180 pages were a drag and could have been cut down by atleast 80 pages. The characters and plot line was really predictable like when she was recounting the cheating scene, it was kinda obvious that this was going to be one of those "partner pays to test s.o for loyalty" plot.
The "thrill" part actually began around 220 pages in when Jill knocks on Abigail's window for help and from there the last hundred or so pages, the pace quickened.
Although I'm kinda disappointed that it was a happy ending of sorts, I really would've liked it more if Abigail hadn't survive the situation.
