I love this book and thought the movie was done well also. The second book Puddin' (Dumplin' #2) by Julie Murphy I thought was even better and there's a third coming out next month! Pumpkin (Dumplin', #3) by Julie Murphy

message 62: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 418 comments I'm a little late to the party, but I can I also signal massive support for Karl Urban in Doom? Also, Rosamund Pike is awesome (per usual) and the Rock with hair always makes me smile.

Doom is like one of my comfort movies. It is not at all good and super campy and gory, but if I'm bored and it is streaming, I'll always throw it on.

message 63: by Lexi (new)

Lexi I own Equal Rites and have read before but not for a few years. I can definitely read that one as my first book!

I actually have Mort and Guards! Guards! as well. I've read quite a few books in the Disc World series (although none recently) so I'm more than happy to reread and jump around.

Hello DEATH

Hey Judith!
This is going to be fun having you as a Mod! Please show mercy on me for my first TT challenge!

message 69: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments So I asked to get permission to edit the SS as it's just view right now. Was that the correct thing to do? I don't see anyone entering anything on it, which seems odd to me, so I figured maybe that's what I needed to do?? Or maybe it's just not ready yet for us to start adding books? Sorry, newbie to this challenge!

message 70: by Vivi (new)

Vivi | 156 comments I asked for access too... I don’t think we can plan for books without adding the books to a task... And without seeing which tasks are already taken by other teammates... That's the all point of having a separate team spreadsheet of the official team spreadsheet; to plan readings.

message 71: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) I believe that Eldarwen and I are the only ones with access to the spreadsheet. We ask you all to do completion posts and list what your book works for and then we place it. Sometimes we have to move it around. There isn't really a lot of planning needed for this one. E will correct me if I'm wrong but that's how it has worked in the past.

message 72: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13647 comments Mod
Guys, the spreadsheet is for captains only.

As Stacie already said, you post completion posts for the books you have finished with all the options they work for (the sample post has been posted from the beginning in one of the first posts of this thread).

If you plan on reading specific books and you already know they are going to work for a specific task - say a recommendation from another team, or a bingo square, or a book from one of the lists, as an example - you give a shout here. Stacie and I will then add those books to the team spreadsheet.

There is no need for you to worry over the spreadsheet. That's what captains are there for :-)

message 73: by Tati (new)

Tati | 1350 comments so, I'm a bit lost on the Bingo tab. Is there an explanation for what the images mean somewhere?

Also, do books started before the challenge begins count?

message 74: by LaurLa (new)

LaurLa | 2378 comments Tati wrote: "so, I'm a bit lost on the Bingo tab. Is there an explanation for what the images mean somewhere?

Instructions for all parts of the game are Here

Per that thread, books may not be started until AFTER the game starts.

For Bingo - based on these instructions, how a book works for a square is interpretive. So cover, in text, title, pretty much anyway you could draw a link between the square and your book would work. If you aren't sure, ask here and I'm sure E and Stacie would confirm if they think it works.

Bingo
Use books to mark off the squares on the bingo card - being creative with your links! Each book can only be used to cover off one square.
Marking off a square is 5 points
Completing the card gives a bonus 40 points.
The card is under the spoiler.

message 75: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) Thank you for posting all that LaurLa!!

When you post a completion, tell us how you think your book will work for any of the bingo spaces. If it's more than one, even better. Eldarwen and I will do the rest and keep you all posted on what we need. We've got three months to read as much as we can, complete Bingo and the Jackanory and most importantly, have fun!

message 76: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments Very helpful Stacie, LaurLa and E! I'm just used to tracking sheets from other challenges, so wasn't sure how this was organized. Works for me to just post in the thread here. I am planning on reading all 3 books for May BOM. Two have already come in from my library, so fingers crossed I get chosen to write DQs for one of them, or I can be a backup writer if someone else on the team is chosen. I still have books to finish for UNO and Big Brother challenges, so no problem waiting until this one begins to start reading.
I will post as I complete using the format provided on page 1 of this thread! Thanks for all the guidance!

message 77: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 418 comments Nanci wrote: "I'm just used to tracking sheets from other challenges, so wasn't sure how this was organized.”

Same. I’ll just have to pay good attention to the posts here and watch the spreadsheet as the captains update.

Please, everyone, be sure to keep the captains in the loop! As someone who can’t read more than a couple books a month, there is nothing more annoying than reading for a specific task only to find it scooped up by someone else. The more we communicate, the less likely we are to duplicate our efforts.

message 78: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 13647 comments Mod
Absolutely right, Rachel! :-)

Communication is key!

But from past experience, even readers with only a couple of books per month will have no problem slotting their books in :-)

Hello and good morning team DEATH!

In just a few more days, we are off on our reading adventure for Tower Teams 8!

Do you know which book you're going to start the challenge off with? Or maybe you've got several you put aside to read for TT?

Personally, I'm hesitating. I am eyeing the dragon and the camel square for Bingo and I have several books that would fit both squares and I want to read them all so I can't actually decide and settle for one. The problems of a large TBR... *sigh*

Good morning!

To be honest, I have no idea... I have found a book with 2 turtles on the cover, so I might start with that one. But nothing set in stone yet

I don't think I've ever come across a book with turtles on the cover, now that you mention it a a possibility.

message 87: by Lexi (new)

Lexi I have a book in mind that completes a few tasks - skull or cityscape on cover, devils, character representing death.

message 88: by Denise (new)

Denise (drams5) | 405 comments Popping over from team Sam Vimes with a couple of recommendations.

If you are looking for a book about strong female friendships (with a hint of magical realism), I recommend The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat.
The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat by Edward Kelsey Moore

The Shadow of the Wind is one of my favorites. It takes place in Spain and I felt like I was transported. I'm not even sure what genre I'd put it in...mystery/historical fiction?
The Shadow of the Wind (The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, #1) by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

Two of my recent favorites are:
Anxious People (quirky characters, navigating life)
Anxious People by Fredrik Backman
and The Wife Upstairs (mystery with a twisty plot)
The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins

And one bonus recommendation just for your team --
The Book Thief
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
It's narrated by Death, so should be right up your alley.

Happy reading!

Always good when a book fits multiple tasks! But you'll find that's the case with most books :-)

Hello DEATH! You called Team Sam Vimes, and obviously, we had to obey the summons. Obviously, we took our sweet time, but you already had some near-Vimes Moments, and while you are waiting for him to decide whether he dies or not, you wisely choose to be reading books.

Please find some of our Recommendations:

The Fifth Elephant &Thud! where DEATH and Vimes are having their moments. PRICELESS.

Because you like cats, we would absolutely recommend the Kate Daniels series Magic Bites. Hey kitty, kitty! And the Cat... Who series The Cat Who Could Read Backwards.

Concerning horses: Riders and Polo by Jilly Cooper comes to mind.

Some other DEAD-LY books: And Then There Were None & Rivers of London.

But if the pressure gets too much and you want to escape it all, The Blue Castle & Under the Tuscan Sun would help you.
And as you also like spicy food: Unmarriageable.

Also, further recommendations are under this link.

I'm planning on starting with the first BOM in case my name is chosen for write DQs. After that I may read the next BOM. I also have The Book of Two Ways which is longer that I'm hoping to read. Still working on my UNO books, but I'm a planner, so once that's done I'll be getting my books in order!

message 100: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments I guess the MOD's set up the SS the way they did for a reason, but I think it's going to be more complicated/confusing without being able to add my own books. Especially for some things but hopefully it'll work out. If we're going to add all the tasks a book can work for, that could end up being a LOT of typing for one book.

I don't mean to be complaining but just my opinion. Maybe I'm misunderstanding. I recall adding my DQ's / Answers on our team SS other times with links to my comments. So I'm wondering if this is new due to issues or something.

Do we have any reall plan of attack? We read any book we want and then look for a task it hopefully fits, unless we already know what it'll fit. Are we going to try to get the BINGO card done quickly or just as we go along fill it up just if a book fits? Just wondering what our plans are.

Is there any reason (unless there's a task) to read smaller page count books? I know larger books count more in general.

I'm excited to start! I will be gone May 4-7 on a mini-vacay, so if I don't do much on this thread, I'll add what I need to on the 7th. I'll double check the rules but I don't think we have to check in any particular day, but if we do I'll figure out something.
