Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Hello team. I wanted to read lots on the first day to make a good start, however I had a terrible night's sleep which has left me exhausted.
I have started Black Beauty and will try and finish what I can before I fall asleep. Tomorrow, I will begin The Foundling with the group and maybe The Handmaid's Tale too.

I hope everyone is having a pleasant weekend!

Take care of yourself first and for most! This challenge is a marathon for sure and not a sprint.

I started the BOM so I’m ready to answer the questions when they get posted tomorrow. It has an interesting start and I feel for the MC, I’m curious to see where it goes.

I’ve made great headway into Chain of Iron, thankfully Clare book read fast as it’s due back to the library in a couple days.

And while running errands and doing some cleaning I started my current audio Misbehaving about the start of behavioral economics, so far I love it. I wish I could take a course or five from this man. By the way, this is available on KU if the topic is of interest to anyone.

Beth (jasonverlander) | 1567 comments Question about task: a book whose title initials make a well-known acronym (like TLC - Tender Loving Care) Define your acronym, with a reference link. min three letters in your acronym, use all the letters in the title, in unchanged order

How well known does well known have to be? There is a version of the Bible that is CSB (Christian Standard Bible) but anyone that isn’t involved in the church probably wouldn’t recognize it.

Or maybe Citizens State Bank? But that’s not known internationally. I’m sorry I’m overthinking this LOL. I just don’t want to reserve a task if it won’t fit

I will yes to the bible acronym, no to the bank. Just include a link to something that shows it's valid. Like csbible.com or something. There is no way everyone will recognize every acronym with being a diverse and international group. Hence the link request.

When I typed in CSB only into google it came up as option 2, so I'd say it's common. It probably would of been number one but a chemical safety board came up first which directly relates to my line of work.

I think Beth was looking at option for Crazy Stupid Bromance looking at the book log. That book fits really well in a BINGO square.

So let's use hers for the BINGO and yours for the acronym task.

Unless she was looking at placement options for a different book.

Ohhhh the books don’t have to fit for both? In that case I’d say use SOS for acronym and my book for the dead rat bingo.

Truitt_T | 801 comments Is there any chance we could talk about the BINGO squares? I'm having trouble figuring out what some of the squares are, much less what books should count for them.

For example: I'm rereading (actually listening for the first time) Oath of Swords. The MC and his sidekick have pointy ears. Square G5 has what looks like an elf with pointy ears, but the resolution isn't great and I don't really know it that would work anyway.

Comments? Suggestions? Thanks!

message 170: by Lexi (last edited May 02, 2021 06:15PM) (new)

Lexi | 4254 comments If you go down to the list of spaces, it does describe them so G5 is "elf archer." I might look for elf or archer for that one. (Also, that is Legolas from LOTR in case you care).

Otherwise, there are some that are very specific to Discworld like XXXX is Australia, so any book in Australia will work. Others might work for plot so for the sock, an example was given of Harry Potter with Doby and the sock. Socks play a role in the plot. The money and hourglass would likely work for any book where running out of time or money are important.

Anyone feel free to ask on any picture where the meaning is unclear and I can help on the Discworld element.

Edited: Also, you might be helped by looking at the already claimed ones

Ok - now I feel like a total idiot. I wasn't looking at the tabs at the bottom and missed the list.
At least I knew that was Legolas, lol.

So my book has a pointy eared (although admittedly non-elf) MC, who uses an arbalest. Is that close enough?

And the Captains pick what to use each book for? I add the options, you all put it to use whever it fits best, correct?

I know, I know - I ask a lot of questions....

ETA: And, yes, another question. I've got The Lost Orphan, but I didn't get a chance to start it today. Am I correct in thinking that you can only answer the BOM daily questions the day they're posted, meaning that tomorrow I should just start with the Day Two questions, not backtrack and hit Day One?

Thanks, again.

message 173: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4254 comments I think that works just fine. There are lots of pages to the SS so don't feel like an idiot.

Also, you can answer the BOM questions any day for an entire month. I have not even started the book yet, as I spent all of today applying to a job and cleaning.

Redshirt (kessa_cirtos) | 135 comments Just checking in!

Tru - It's a shame they won't run an "intellectual" play! :c

I've been listening to an audiobook (added to the sheet) while I've been sick. I'll probably need some help getting it sorted into the correct tasks/numbers into our spreadsheet.

I took Fugitive Telemetry off of my currently reading since I haven't finished Network Effect and haven't started FT! (I plagiarized thank you Susan! the assorted tasks on the sheet) So the good news is that it's now eligible for TT since my UNO crew didn't need any of my in-progress books for us to finish. (It was such a great challenge and everyone was wonderful!)

I've listened to that, I thought it was fun. I can find a spot for it :)

Edit: never mind, you found lots of options.

Redshirt (kessa_cirtos) | 135 comments Ahahah. Thanks Judith! I wasn't sure where to start and just looked at your list by tasks. I'm unsure about the other minigames (bingo, etc), but figured I'd try to do some of the work there. I'll throw in read dates once I'm done with those two books.

What should I look to read next? Which tasks have historically been more difficult to complete?

message 182: by Beth (new)

Beth (jasonverlander) | 1567 comments I hope I'm doing bingo correctly! At least for me, I've been taking it a little open to interpretation. I think for right now, just list anything it fits for! Even the easy spell it out tasks. Judith is a queen and will find where each book needs to go by the end of it!

Yes, that's fine. Open to interpretation/being creative is what we like to see. Though literal works as well.

I have the book Home down for the movie clapboard because it's a memoir for Julie Andrews because she's been in a million movies.

Just nothing too out there. If you aren't sure, ask. It's what the captains are here for.

Also, does it make your job easier or harder for us to put the books in the bingo tab or would you rather we just put it in the tracking tab with where it fits on the bingo board? I'm just thinking of books that may fit for a bingo task but also fits well for a regular task as well

The story is where we will have the most freedom and flexibility so I'm leaving that alone for now. But we should probably come up with a plan for that at some point.

As for hard tasks, some of them have already been checked off, because this team is that awesome. I was expecting religious zealot to be hard but Susan and Lexi have that handled. Go team!

I tend to think the plot based tasks can be hard simply because you don't always know beforehand the book will fit there. Example: someone reads a story to a child. Though worst case there is someone reads Thud!

Not sure that was helpful direction, but this early on especially, read what interests you as there are so many open opinions.

Put it down where you think it fits best and just list the others. The list of others is more for later in the game and we are trying to make everything fit when there aren't a lot of open options.

Also if you don't know where it fits best, you can just list the options and the captain logging can make an executive decision as to where it goes.

Oh no I've been forgetting about the story. I'll look at that tab today and see what that's all about.

As a British citizen, I recognised my Queen instantly :P I don't think I've seen that picture before though...

I got ahead of schedule with The Foundling. I was happily listening away trying to stop at the right place and then all of a sudden "chapter 12". Oh well, it just means I have less to listen to tomorrow so I'll probably start a different audiobook as well.
