I don’t know what it says about me but there have been times I’ve gotten in the longest line at the grocery store just so I could have a couple minutes to read while waiting 😂

Lemme do that now, Lexi!

Done with Reborn: Evolution! Could someone throw up 5/8 for it for me when you jump in the spreadsheet next? Otherwise, I'll catch it tomorrow.

Haha, I don't think I've done that before, but I have definitely not cared about just missing a bus so I will have time to do some reading before the next one arrives.

SandyL | 4747 comments I hope everyone is having a great weekend!! I haven't had a lot of time to post - I do taxes and the tax season in the US was extended to May 17th, so work is busy until then. I am getting some reading done and it should pick up after next week. Happy Mother's Day to everyone who is a mother!!

message 258: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 4679 comments So glad the 17th is almost here for you Sandy! Hopefully you can take a few days off after that and just breath and read :D

message 259: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 4679 comments Beth, I know what you mean about genres, I just finished You Are Your Best Thing: Vulnerability, Shame Resilience, and the Black Experience (great stories shared, and broke my heart for some of them) which is a heavy read, so I need to read a light and easy genre now :D

message 260: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8052 comments Oook!
Hello the library! Hello Judith and Lexi and all!!!!!!
So, after finishing reading The Light Fantastic, I watched the tv show, and I must say, the librarian is one gorgeous ginger!

And, I watched the preview for Going Postal, and although I will wait to watch until after I read it, I have to know if I can read it out of order. I need to know about my Moist! Any advice?

message 261: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4254 comments Jenny, in order to get to Going Postal, I would reccomend at least meeting the city first. That would be Guards! Guards! and the Men at Arms series. (I can see you really liking Vimes). However, Going Postal is not an awful place to start, you just may not quite appreciate Lord Vetinari, the Lord Patrician, as much before hand. You have to read Going Postal before Making Money. I consider Raising Steam not worth reading unless you have already read most every other discworld book. (I will go cross-post this in your thread too).

Lexi | 4254 comments Happy Monday everyone,

There is a now BOM for June (starting June 9th). It is Prickly Business and is the backroom BOM. Discussion link here Judith has already mentioned the backroom but since the book contains explicit material it requires everyone to be over 18 to join the backroom group. (I don't think we have any minors). Also, I expect it to not be for everyone, but the discussions can be a lot of fun, and someone who has read the book says it has something resembling a plot. The book is free on Kindle Unlimited, and last time I looked, you could get a free two months if you has a US address (sorry non-US people). Please feel free to ask any questions, and we still have the normal three books for June. I will add all the links to the post at the top of the thread.

message 263: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4254 comments First, you all are an awesome team. While this is not a sprint and it is only the start of May, we are in the top three teams, and while not all teams update their points regularly, I just wanted to tell everyone how great we are doing so far.

BOM Update:

Here are all the links for the BOMs if you want to start planning for June. Also, if anyone still wants to join for The Foundling, you can answer questions until June 2 ( 1 month after the BOM started).

Books of the Month

BOM by Month
May:
Adult: The Foundling (AKA The Lost Orphan - Discussion Thread – May 2)
YA: Dumplin' (Discussion Thread - May 16)
Discworld: Equal Rites ( Discussion Thread - starts May 22)

June BOM
Adult - The Midnight Library (Discussion Thread - June 2)
Backroom (18+) - Prickly Business (Discussion Thread - June 9)
YA - Firekeeper's Daughter (Discussion Thread - June 16)
Discworld - Mort (Discussion Thread - June 22)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Well done team!

I'm about to embark on the journey that is reading Bleak House. It will get us lots of points as it is just over 1,000 pages long (over 37 hours of audiobook). It will probably take me a while to finish, but as I am listening to it as an audiobook hopefully it won't take that long.
Has anyone read it before? I've not really read much by Charles Dicken yet.

Dickens is hit and miss with me and I haven't read this one. I know someone who probably has, I'll go check and see what she says about it (if she read it)

Judith is a former teammate of mine, so I thought I'd stop in and say hello.

message 268: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments Hi Keely, Judith came and found me because Dickens popped up (she knows me too well!). I've read almost all of his books now, including Bleak House. I have to be honest and say it's not my favourite of his, but that's kind of like saying that caramel cake isn't my favourite. It may not be blueberry, chocolate, coffee or cream, but it's still cake, and therefore superior to any kind of asparagus, lol.

All kidding aside, I personally think the book starts very strongly, but it got a bit longwinded towards the middle (alas, a common failing in what I think is an otherwise excellent author), and it picks up again after that.

It's definitely a rewarding read if you stay with it though!

On a side note, my favourite Dickens is David Copperfield, especially the audio version narrated by Richard Armitage, and Our Mutual Friend comes in a close second :)

Go us!

I've signed up as backup in the thread, Lexi, so we're all set to go for next month's BOM. I've got the physical book on standby to start on the 2nd!

Happy belated mother's day to all mother's (human and fur babies alike.) I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend!

Also saw that Lexi was picked for DQs for Equal Rites, so glad to see us getting those DQs. And just let me know if you need me to step in Lexi...I'll read along and be ready in case you need to work dissertation.

And I just downloaded my backroom book, definately mixed reviews for that one...

Thank you Sammy! I attempted to listen to Bleak House over a year ago now while I was working which was a mistake because I missed a lot of details. I didn't get all that far in and I will starting afresh as I remember almost nothing. This time I will be much more focused on the book.

The next Dickens book I would read probably will be David Copperfield especially if it is being read by Richard Armitage (who doesn't love his voice?)

Redshirt (kessa_cirtos) | 135 comments @Beth, how are you enjoying The Silent Patient?

message 282: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 801 comments No 1000+ page books for me at the moment. I've been slowly slogging my way through Laurell K. Hamilton's Sucker Punch which is 609 pages, but it's far too easy to put down. Too many pages for too little plot strikes me as the problem.

It's only recently that I've stopped wallowing in HEAs and branched backout into a variety of fiction and a bit of non-fiction - COVID definitely had an impact on my reading tastes. Did anyone else notice a change in their reading material or patterns this last year?

As for today, I'm reading lots of short books. I'm part of a Challenge that closes out at midnight and our team's last task is to read as many 150+ page books that meet the task criteria. My team is battling for second place, so it's convenient that I'm off from work today, the weather is lousy, and I've little I must do but cook / restock the freezer. Audio books are perfect for cooking....

message 283: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I wouldn't say my reading tastes have changed, but my reading habits did.
At the very beginning of the year I was working in retail, but mostly out the back dealing with returns so I was able to listen to audiobooks on my phone. It's was how I really began enjoying audiobooks and in the 2 years I was there, I was able to listen to a lot of books I would still be planning to read now if I hadn't.
And then I found a full-time office job which was pretty repetitive work and everyone else would listen to things through headphones so I thought it would be great to listen to audiobooks. 8 hour working days, 5 days a week would have equalled a lot of books. However, around a month after I started, the UK went into lockdown and because I was still in training and they didn't have enough laptops (I worked with personal information so I couldn't use my own) I wasn't able to work from home.
A long story short, after 3 months they told me they had to terminate my contract. So while I had lots of time on my hands now, I didn't always think to read/listen to books. I probably read less because of that. But now I have incorporated books into my daily sechedule and of course team challenges have helped keep me motivated!

message 284: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 7435 comments Mod
My reading habits changed some as well. A little less with the audio because I was no longer commuting to work via public transportation.

And maybe because I was home more I noticed how many physical unread books that I have. I've done a more concerted effort to read through these. Though less trips (and more highly specific shopping) out to stores has lead to much less impulse buying from bargain tables. Which in turn has helped reduce my piles of books in my house.

But I will say I've been less inclined to read books that are full of stupid or pointless drama. I simply don't have the patience for it anymore. I'd rather read about more realistic type problems.

message 285: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 4679 comments My audiobooks suffered since I would listen on my commute to work, so I became a bit more choosy when picking an audiobook since it took longer (also realized how much those audiobooks helped bring me out of work mode on my commute home which dissapeared working from home).

I did seem to tend toward more fantasy or HEA because my brain just coulnd't handle anything to real life or sad. But I'm slowly coming back to normal reading habits ;)

Truitt_T | 801 comments Snowtulip wrote: "Good luck on your challenge Truitt, so close!!"

Thank you! I'm done for the day. I was hoping to get one more finished - I was listening to an audio book on and off today and had hoped I'd be able to finish it up with the Kindle version tonight, but I'm going to come up just short. No big deal - I managed to read five short books today (of the fairly light and fluffy variety), and I'm pretty burned out.

I don't know if our team total is enough, but we gave it a good try!

For anyone planning on reading Dumplin', I have a long list of tasks it works for on the tracking sheet.

It may work for others, but these are ones I know it works for without having read the book yet.

message 289: by Kirby (new)

Kirby | 5 comments I've noticed on the tasks sheet there are a bunch of mentions of "MPG" what exactly does that stand for?

message 290: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 7435 comments Mod
MPG stands for Main Page Genre.

It’s the list of genres on the right hand side of a book’s GR page

message 294: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I really should read this Murderbot books you all keep talking about.

I'm reading The Color of Magic. I'm only about 10% in but so far I'm finding it quite an easy and fairly quick read. If I add it to the spreadsheet, would one of you with more experiance with the Discworld books mind finding a place for it? Maybe you will want to use it for one of the Discworld related places on the bingo that I still don't quite understand.

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Thank you Judith :) The book won't be my main focus but I do want to finish it before we start Equal Rites. So far I am enjoying my introduction into Discworld. This is going to add a lot of books to my TBR list.
