Just hanging out with the wee one. Nothing special, hopefully you all having more exciting things going on ;)

Redshirt (kessa_cirtos) | 135 comments @Jen, Aw thanks! I like being helpful. I'm currently fighting a migraine, triggered by the sunlight and unwavering pressure from this week's stress. But I did manage to buy the things I need to spackle my upstairs walls and lay down primer for the walls. I'm hoping to finish that project this weekend.

@Judith, sounds cozy! And reading, of course?

Could someone please add a 5/14 to A Pho Love Story next time you're in the spreadsheet?

Of course! That’s the best way to spend his nap time 😉

message 306: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4254 comments I need to get back to working on papers and job hunting this weekend. I have been using reading to avoid real life, which is great for our team, less great for real life.

Also, added the date, Redshirt, and I have migraines; they are not fun. Hope you feel better soon.

message 307: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I hope you feel better soon too, Redshirt.

I'm going swimming tomorrow for a bit of exercise and on Sunday I'll be home alone for part of the day so hopefully I'll finish one of the many books I have on the go right now.

Next week I have to take my step-dad to a few appointments. He had his knee replaced the other week so he can't drive right now. But that does mean I'll be able to sit in the car with a book while I wait for him, so that's a bonus.

Joyce (eternity21) | 478 comments @Redshirt: You beat me to it. I was going to go through and put the list together this weekend. LOL
I love their Listopias as well. Very clever and easy to look up books to see if they are in your tbr

by the way have you read Redshirts by John Scalzi it was good.

Christina (chrissy__) | 3008 comments Hi from Team Nanny Ogg *waves*

So many familiar faces in here, especially Lexi who I just met through uno :)

Anyway, I just wanted to say, REDSHIRT!! Love your name! :D (and I hope you're feeling better soon; I have the occasional migraine and they SUCK) (although I just came to realize there are two red shirt references?!)

Snowtulip | 4679 comments So glad the weekend is here!

Similar to Redshirt, I have painting to finish this weekend...so that means lots of audiobook time :)

message 314: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4747 comments I get to deal with all the procrastinators who haven't filed their tax returns yet! :-) I also have my second covid vaccine on Saturday, so it should be an interesting weekend, unfortunately without much reading.

message 315: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 4679 comments Hope you are doing ok Sandy, my second vaccine hit me hard...but hopefully next weekend will be amazing being done with both vaccines and taxes :D

Snowtulip | 4679 comments Hope everyone had some good reads this weekend. I'm in the middle of The Gene: An Intimate History and A Guide to the Birds of East Africa and both are good so far.

I'm going to start The Best Thing later tonight. I must admit, although I love Mariana Zapata, I've been hesitant to start this one because I did not enjoy Luna and the Lie..fingers crossed!

It's not my favorite, or even top 3 of hers, but I liked it more than I was afraid I was going to. I generally hate the troupe she tackled here. BUT the way Zapata handled it, it wasn't intentional and Lenny did really try to let Jonah know what was going on. Which is what I hate about it in most books and find unforgiveable.

Also, task 234 is a good one for this.

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Hello everyone, I hope you are all doing well.

I should finish a couple of books this week. Cilka's Journey which I am hoping to finish tonight and The Handmaid's Tale I am going to try and finish this week. I will also do my best to finish The Color of Magic too but whenever I go to read it, I'm either too tired or I get interrupted.

I'm one of the tax procrastinators, lol - I did them this morning. Mine were easy, though, and worked out to ust about what I expected.

I hope your second vaccine dose went well - like Snowtulip, the second one hit me hard. I was exhuasted for days.

Re: BOM
I tried reading The Lost Orphan, but it really, really wasn't working for me. I feel a bit guilty, but I'm not going to participate for that one. I am still planning on trying Dumplin' and, of course, Equal Rites. I've requested next month's books from the library, but it looks like a long wait - we'll see if I get them in time.

message 320: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4254 comments Truitt, not every book is for everyone so do not worry about it. I finished it but read 10 other books between starting and finishing it, which says something. You have up to a month after the start date to read the BOM if that helps with books from the library.

I was hit hard by both doses. I hope you are doing well, Sandy and Judith that tomorrow goes well.

message 321: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4254 comments Also, thank you everyone for checking in.

Beth and Skandia, we have not heard from either of you in a bit. Hope you are both doing well and can you at minimum come wave hi.

message 322: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments How did you find Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Lexi? I read it a few years ago now so I can't really remember details, but I remember enjoying it.
I'm hoping to get around to reading Around the World in Eighty Days by the same author at some point this year, but I doubt it will happen during this challenge.

message 323: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4254 comments I gave it three stars. I did like it better than 10,000 leagues. Around the World in Eighty Days is really problematic and more so than 10,000 leagues or Journey as in those, there are much fewer people to be racist about as versus the entire globe. Mostly for Journey, I enjoyed parts and found other parts bogged down with now outdated scientific concepts. Oddly, enough the absolutely absurd like the underground ocean and inhabitants was less of an issue, as at that point, we had crossed into speculative fiction.

message 324: by Jen (new)

Jen Sabo | 547 comments I just finished A Court of Wings and Ruin. I don't often read YA fantasy, but man that one sucked me in.

Snowtulip | 4679 comments Jen wrote: "I just finished A Court of Wings and Ruin. I don't often read YA fantasy, but man that one sucked me in."

I really liked that one Jen, 4.5 star read for me, but I kind of love most all of her books :)

message 326: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Lexi - yeah I enjoyed Journey more than 10,000 leagues. I had to keep reminding myself about the science known at the time it was written too. That's a shame about Around the World in Eighty Days, but I'll probably still read it (or listen to it) as it's been on my TBR for a long time and it's one of those book I feel I should read at least once.

message 327: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4747 comments I survived tax day and my second vaccination. My dog is so happy to have me home (although I still have to work, but just not nearly so much.) And I'm happy to be able to start reading more and get my house clean! I hope everyone is enjoying their current books! I'm finishing up Dumplin' right now.

message 329: by Skandia (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 1724 comments Sry I've been missing from thread. Life got a little busy last week but all is good and I have finished a book today - The Royal We.
If there are fans of royalty or people interested in the story of William and Kate , then this is fiction loosely based on their meeting in Oxford and courtship. Except the heroine in the book is an American girl. It was pretty ok read

I need to choose my next book now and no idea what I'm in the mood for.

message 330: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4254 comments Great to hear from you Skandia, what kind of book do you think you are the mood for?

More romance? I just read a great fantasy romance and the first one is fun too - Swordheart.

message 331: by Skandia (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 1724 comments Lexi, thanks for rec, this looks just like something I would like to read.
I've been eying A Court of Silver Flames but it's a very long book.
I also have A Touch of Darkness - A modern Hades and Persephone retelling.
I just can't choose.

"He was death, brought to life." pg. 288. It's slow going for me. I didn't remember Goodkind's writing style sucking this much when I read it as a teen. Lol.

Added and I get that. There are books from my teens I probably could not read now

Beth (jasonverlander) | 1567 comments Hi all, sorry I’ve been absent. Between work and a death of someone very close to me, I’ve been absent from most social media. I’ve been reading a bit but will get more done in the next couple days

message 337: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4254 comments Beth, I’m sorry to hear that and don’t worry about reading if you don’t want to. Take care of yourself first. Thank you for checking in. If just putting books on your TT shelf is easier, I can add them to the spreadsheet for you.

message 338: by Redshirt (new)

Redshirt (kessa_cirtos) | 135 comments Thanks Lexi! What were some of the books from your teens that you wouldn't enjoy now?

Also, I've got moist in text! If that task isn't already finished, could someone toss a note in The Widow Wears Scarlet, for me? If not, I'll be in the sheets tomorrow and can manage it!

"Damian drank in the vision of loveliness, of moist lips parted on a gasp, of long lashes fluttering, of the soft swell of her heaving bosom." (Scarlett was really excited about seeing a bunch of lanterns in a garden. Lol. And Damian was watching her, of course.)

message 339: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I'm sorry for your loss Beth. As Lexi said, take care of yourself. If reading helps then read away, but if it doesn't then don't force yourself.

message 340: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4254 comments Redshirt wrote: "Thanks Lexi! What were some of the books from your teens that you wouldn't enjoy now?"

So not teen but back in middle school, I read many of the Dragonlance books, and I still have the first trilogy that I got for a second hand bookstore. Mostly, I find that I am much more aware now of gender and racial biases and stereotypes. Some though are just bad writing.

it looks like the GR gremlins nabbed you on Unscripted Love. It's on your shelf but it doesn't have a read date. Can you add the date when you get a chance?

No worries, it happens to all of us especially if the app is involved.

message 344: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4254 comments I wanted to tell everyone good job. Not only are we consistently top three for ranking (depending on when teams update the spreadsheet), but we are also top three for BOM points. You all are awesome, keep it up.

message 345: by Keely (last edited May 21, 2021 03:03PM) (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Well done everyone!

I now have access to two of the BOM for next month and I'm still hoping to find a copy of The Midnight Library as that was the one I really wanted to read. I'm sure I saw a store that sells things cheaper advertise it so I'm planning to have a look next week.

I think I'm going to put The Color of Magic on hold temporarily and focus on Equal Rites as the BOM starts tomorrow.
I would like to finish the books I have on the spreadsheet by the end of this month with the exception of The Color of Magic. That's my own little personal goal.

Hello Everyone! I hope everyone is enjoying the books you are reading so far. Any favorites so far you'd like share with the team? Any stinkers we should avoid ;)

Also,
If anyone on the team is interested in reading: Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine, it works for the morris dancing task. I read it not that long ago for the same task during a different challenge.
