Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I just finished The Handmaid's Tale (finally). I must say I was a little disappointed in the book. I did watch the first season of the TV series a few years ago so maybe that influenced my judgement, but if someone read it without any prior knowledge I think they would be confused. It seemed to take a while to explain much about the situation and why things were that way.
I personally preferred the adaption over the book.

Another option is A Deadly Education for Morris Dancers if anyone wants to read it. I enjoyed it.

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I found A Deadly Education on my library app so I can read that. It sounds interesting. I've reserved it but won't be able to begin it until the 6th June, but that's fine because I have plenty of other books to finish first.

Yikes, I'm basically scared to read some of those books I loved in pre-teen/teen years...I've changed, times have changed...I think many would be cringe worthy :(

I've been tempted to re-read Over Sea, Under Stone, I really loved this series, but again, a little nervous that it might not have held up as well as I remember...

My fav so far was Wild Sign, love this series and world, I just can't seem to get enough...so if you love werewolves and haven't read Patricia Briggs yet, this is for you!

My least favorite was Dumplin', Will was driving me insane, only got a 2.5 star.

My current read The Gene: An Intimate History, is absolutely fascinating me, such a great mix of history and science :)

message 357: by Redshirt (new)

Redshirt (kessa_cirtos) | 135 comments I've enjoyed The Watergate Girl. And, of course, the Murderbot Diaries. Could someone toss 5/23 on The Watergate Girl for me, please? I'm all finished!

Lexi | 4254 comments Snowtulip, I will try to keep up with Equal Rites but just flagging that I may need help on questions.

Edit: I just read day 1 and 2 so I should get to my section tomorrow so I am good.

I'm enjoying working my way through the Psy-Changeling series and the Timber Creek K-9 series. I liked House of Earth and Blood more than I expected too.

I think my least favorite so far is also Dumplin'.

message 361: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 4679 comments I love Psy-Changeling, they never get old even though there are so many books in the series, which is hard to do.

Killing Trail has been on my tbr for many years, I may have to get to it sooner :)

just dropping by to say that I listened to The Wall of Winnipeg and Me by Mariana Zapata based on your recommendation.

Sandy,

When you get a chance could you put Blackbird Knitting on your TT shelf. It actually looks like you put in on you uno2021 shelf by accident.

By the way, that cover is just amazing. LOL

Skandia (sfgirl) | 1724 comments Dear Captains, do we have some open tasks that need quite specific research for a book that fits and have not been claimed yet?
I'd be happy to go digging and reading.

EDIT: I have a book set in South Africa if this task is not claimed yet.

I went ahead and grabbed the link for you Day 1.

But how you link to a specific post is you right-click on the date/time stamp of the post (top right corner of post). And then insert a link the the cell of the spreadsheet link you normally do.

Jen Sabo | 547 comments Does anyone use spreadsheets to track when library books are due? I often get back into reading, but then have difficulties with juggling when ebooks and audiobooks (via overdrive) are due. Then the books expire, I slow down on reading until I get inspired and the cycle starts again.

BOM DQ assignments have been made for the June BOMs.

Lexi will be writing DQs for the Backroom BOM
Judith will be writing DQs for Firekeeper's Daughter

our team was not selected for Midnight Library or Mort. But overall no complaints, the BOM randomizer has been nicer to us than other teams.

message 393: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4254 comments Truitt,

Since I saw you are reading The Empress of Salt and Fortune, the second one is free as an ebook until May 28th (https://ebookclub.tor.com/) - When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain.

For everyone, I highly recommend both of them (but read in order).

Jenny | 8052 comments Dropping in from Moist to second Lexi's recommendation. Those books are wonderful.

Also, I saw that Jen is looking for a science book?
Since I don't know what you like science-wise, I am recommending a few that are absolute gems, and you don't need to have a PhD in order to grok them...

[book:The Empress of Salt and Fortune
will be a reread for me. I decided on it not just for the charming rabbit on the cover, but because I recently bought When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain - right before it became the Tor freebie, lol. Oh well - I only spent $1.99 on it, and I'm happy to support the author.

I definitely support all the recommendations of The Empress of Salt and Fortune - it was great.
