Beowulf question

I cannot remember the title of a book I read a while back and would really appreciate it if someone can tell me the name if they know it! It is about an archeologist trying to help decide if a child that's half human and half gorilla should be considered human during a trial. It also follows a love story between him and a woman. I think it was written in the 1960's or so?
