Theresa | 15574 comments The legal system worked. Guilty on all counts.

It's been a busy work day for me, with no time to go online for fun. I still have another board meeting on zoom shortly, but had to at least start our kaffeklatsch.

No, I did not religiously watch the trial or even consciously wait for the verdict today. I kept an eye on it all from a distance, and just before a late afternoon zoom, I turned on the tv, saw that a verdict due soon, and just left it on mute. I did see enough to notice just how they managed a jury trial during a pandemic, one that was a national flashpoint, under tremendous scrutiny. That was no easy feat.

Meanwhile I need to find out about the shooting today on Long Island. NY State has pretty tough gun laws, compared with most states.

A day of important news - good and sad.

In other news, my work the last few days has been involved with dealing with a bad dog bite case in a building I represent. The dog bit a board member no less. This could lead to the building banning dogs completely. We'll see.

Amy & Karin - how are the campus visits going with your college age kids?

Thanks, but we aren't doing those yet--that's next year for us :) after we see what audition pre-screens he passes. Now it's figuring out where to audition. It's a small list of schools for what he needs, so he is mostly set on where he is going to apply even without visiting the ones he hasn't seen.

But I am eager to hear how the visit to Ithaca went for Amy and her familiy :)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12594 comments Like you, Theresa, I only caught snippets of the trail everyday-never sitting down to watch chunks of it. However, my daughter and I did make a cocktail to sit and wait for the verdict.

On the coivd- vaccine front-had a terrible headache for 3 days-that was it. So thankful.

Doughgirl5562 | 960 comments As has been mentioned, the verdict is in on the Chauvin trial here in Minneapolis. So grateful and I hope this is a step in the right direction. I never would have thought that my city of Minneapolis would become the center for this issue. Just goes to show what some of us didn't know was going on all of this time. My eyes have been opened.

That is GREAT!

We all live in bubbles to some degree. A burst bubble moment for me was my home city attacked on 9/11.

As it should be. That is good news (well, as good as it can be at this point).

Oh no. This, not so good. :-(

When I was a substitute teacher in Minneapolis in the 80's, the school counselor was Prince's mother. I didn't know about him, since it was before he was so famous, but she would talk about going to his shows. By the time he got famous, I had 2 little kids and was totally removed from popular music. So although I know the names of some of his songs, I don't think I would recognize any of them if I heard them.

Prince didn't quite fit in the right time period for me to know his music well, but he was quite brilliant and a great musician, which he was often not credited for.

You can see him here playing guitar and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction for George Harrison:

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8425 comments I also did not follow the trial obsessively, but was at my F2F book club meeting yesterday when one woman got an alert on her phone that the decision would be announced shortly.

So many shootings in the past few days/weeks!

Also missed the Prince bandwagon ... wouldn't recognize any of his music if I heard it. But the few snippets I've heard /seen over the years clearly show his talent.

As for college ... Amy posted on FB that Jaden has committed to Hofstra.

Theresa | 15574 comments I too missed the Prince fandom but knew who he was and heard some of his music since I have much younger sibling. And of course his complete lack of any estate planning whatsoever (and he was no kid when he died) has left a nightmare of a mess of his estate which of course is the his music and his trademark, not just money and possessions and real estate. Accountants, estates lawyers and intellectual property lawyers in the state he claimed as his primary residence at time of death are spending years sorting it out. Pkus making a ton of money.

Miriam | 112 comments Hey everyone,

here in Germany the case ruling from Minneapolis has also been well received.

Prince's most glorious time was during my youth/young adulthood I would say. I liked his music alright, but my taste was a little different. But like with other musicians as well, I have come to appreciate this kind of music more when I became older. As a teenager, I was a little too narrow in my taste and didn't allow for many variations of the type of music I liked (mainly rock and folk and singer-songwriter). That has changed, I have come to allow my feeling decide whether I like the music or not, not the principle or the outside effect it might have or so.

In school everyone is exhausted from having to adapt to new regulations ever so often. The students graduating this year will start their final exams tomorrow. We have spent several hours yesterday trying to organize the exam rooms and to plan the exams. Since there is a kind of strange regulation that the students need to be tested negatively (it says it is obligatory), but on the other hand we can't deny students that are not tested access to the exams, it is really weird and complicated to organize who can write their exams in what room, what teachers can be in those rooms etc. Plus, they are allowed to wear their jackets (since it is cold when you open the windows ever so often), but we need to make sure they don't use their pockets for bringing notes etc..

It is a weird world right now.

The weather here has been quite nice this week and people seem to have been able to enjoy that in spite of all the covid regulations.

Robin P | 5765 comments Unsure where to put this - link to talk by William Kent Krueger about This Tender Land through Doughgirl's library. I think it is available to anyone for one week.

Thank you for your interest in Plymouth READS and our main event with William Kent Krueger this past April 15.

Please find a recording of his talk here: https://bit.ly/PlymouthREADS_Videos

Per contract with the author this video will go away in approximately one week. Enjoy it will you can!

Karin | 9236 comments Good news! Because it's been well over a month and he has always heard earlier, we thought my son wasn't going to get a fourth sholarship via his membership in a high school music club, but he did, and it's the largest one so far. One man has sponsored him three times. It's merit and you have to have been an active member for at least 2 years. He was a member for 5 years.

It all adds up.

LibraryCin | 11702 comments Just wanted to say that I booked my first vaccine appointment last night! Vaccine #1 is set for next Saturday!

I didn't want the Astra Zeneca because I've had a blood clot before. Until this past week, I was too young to get it, anyway, but they lowered the age so that I could as of Tuesday, I think. Still didn't want it, though they are encouraging people to get the first they are eligible for. (Which was making me feel super-guilty, because I want a vaccine, just not that one; if I'd never had a blood clot, I think it wouldn't bother me.)

Lucky for me, a friend pointed something out to me. My previous blood clot counts as a medical issue that means I can get the Moderna or Pfizer! It wasn't easy to find, as it's not listed on the website. I had to download a pdf, then look under heart conditions or something.

Didn't even know what they called it: venous thromboembolism (though it makes sense... once I looked it up, it's both DVT (deep vein thrombosis) - I had this as a clot in my calf - and pulmonary embolism, which I also had after the clot moved to my lung).

I initially still wasn't sure if one almost 20 years ago would count as "a history of...", but I called and the guy on the phone said it's part of my medical history, so he figured it did, so be booked me in for the Moderna or Pfizer.

YAY!

Doughgirl5562 | 960 comments Robin, Thanks so much for posting the link to William Kent Kreuger's virtual talk about This Tender Land! Now everyone else can learn how nice of a man he is :-)

Yes, this is my home library in Plymouth, MN. We have a community program called Plymouth Reads. Like many cities, we select an annual book to read (by a MN author), but we take it further than most cities do. There are multiple community building activities scheduled having to do with the theme of the book - culminating in a presentation by the author. All of this was done virtually this year - obviously.

In addition to the talk by William Kent Krueger, we also had two other presentations:
- A professor of American Indian Studies and member of the an Ojibwe tribe gave a presentation on the history of Native American boarding schools.
- There was a virtual campfire and sing along to songs from the book.

I am a member of the book club whose sole purpose is to read books and vote on the books to be chosen for Plymouth Reads. In fact, I just voted on the books for the 2022 Plymouth Reads! It's a way to serve my community and - for the most part - a very enjoyable service.

Exactly! Yeah, I was in hospital for a few days (and on blood thinners for about 6 months after). In hospital over New Year's, too!

message 25: by Doughgirl5562 (new)

Doughgirl5562 | 960 comments I loved reading everyone's comments about Prince. It's funny, but many of us - especially in Minneapolis or Chanhassen where he was living when he died - felt an almost communal and somewhat overwhelming sense of grief. I know that I did - even though I never saw an actual live performance. I knew his hits - but after he died I learned that he was - as Booknblues said - simply musically brilliant. He played at least 27 instruments. He wrote somewhere over 500 songs (more than the Beatles), including some of mega hit songs for other performers (like Nothing Compares 2 You by Sinead O'Connor and Manic Monday by the Bangles). He was also a very generous man, giving away millions anonymously.

And yet, he wasn't smart enough to have a will as Theresa said. It's amazing to me, especially considering the constant pain that he was in. And yes, it is a heck of a legal mess.

I know ... ditto Aretha Franklin, I think.

And I was reading up on Chadwick Boseman yesterday (Oscar night rabbit hole...) and learned that despite battling colon cancer for the last 4 years of his life he also died without a will!

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8425 comments And YAY for Cindy getting her vaccine! So happy for you. And what a great friend to point out that your past med history of DVT and pulmonary embolism qualified you to jump ahead and specify the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.

LibraryCin | 11702 comments Thank you all for sharing in my excitement!

As much as I love staying home all the time and want to continue to do that, with work, I can't do it all the time. And I take transit, so I am happy about this.

Oh, I know! I told her thank you. She said that a friend of hers had pointed it out to her, otherwise she wouldn't have known either, so it was really her friend who helped us both. :-)

Robin P | 5765 comments My daughter was planning to get J&J because it would be easier to schedule one vaccine than two around her chemo treatments. But now that she is only on a maintenance drug once every 3 weeks, her doctor told her that maintenance drug also has a possible risk of blood clots, so she shouldn't get that one. The good thing was that because she waited till this month (to be done with weekly chemo), there were lots of local places available for the Pfizer & Moderna. So both my kids have had their first dose (both had a headache the next day but then were fine.) Both of them will visit us together in a month, which we are all looking forward to.

Karin | 9236 comments My son had his first vaccination (Moderna) this afternoon after filling out a form where he will be working this summer. The job is a given since they invited him to work as summer relief directly for him at the end of a temp job 2 years ago as long as he's in college. Last year, however, Covid interfered at that time.

My middle daughter mad her appointment but I am not sure when she's going since she has her own car.

Football and pop music fans--we get them done at Gillette Stadium where in normal times the NE Patriots play and they have large music concerts (obviously for super stars since it's huge).
