Hello! My name is Harker Jones and I'm the author of the love story Until September. I've been on Goodreads for a bit but just joined this group so I wanted to introduce myself and my book. I wrote Until September when I was enduring a gloriously painful bout of unrequited love. Being unrequited, my feelings didn't have anywhere to really go, so I funneled them into a book. As one does.
In the lull between the conservative ’50s and the turbulent ’60s, Kyle, an introspective, sentimental boy, leads a golden life. He’s rich, beautiful and smart, and he vacations each year on the same island with the same circle of friends: entitled Adonis Trent; acerbic Claudia; practical Dana; and frivolous Carly. Haunted by a tragedy that took place in his youth, Kyle is more sensitive than his privileged friends. He understands loss, and secrets.
Then, the summer between high school and university he meets a new summer boy, Jack. He's quiet and introspective, speaking to the part of Kyle's soul that his friends don't understand. Kyle falls hopelessly in love and awkwardly tries to befriend and then ingratiate him into his resistant and increasingly troubled circle of friends.
Meanwhile, as Kyle and Jack fall in love that golden summer, Trent toys callously with an island girl's feelings and another summer boy, Trey, who is desperately in love with Kyle, makes a decision that sets in motion a series of devastating repercussions that threatens Kyle and Jack's future as well as that of their friends and families. And they realize they have only until September to salvage that future.
It's sold fairly well considering I'm the only one promoting it and I'm not always promoting it. I've even gotten some fan letters, which is not something I ever anticipated. I truly never thought about them for a second until I got my first. I was over the moon! Also: this is a love story, not a romance. Not intended as a dis to romance novels; this just isn't one of them and I think that throws some people off.
I write screenplays, as well. Focusing predominantly on comedy and horror, I have seven completed features, four of which are in pretty good shape based on feedback I get. My strongest are Never Have I Ever, a slasher/whodunit, and Green Means Go!, a raucous comedy about a woman who sues a pop star for lip syncing.
My short thriller “Cole & Colette” won the Get It Made Short-Form Screenplay Competition and was subsequently produced and accepted into thirty-two film festivals, garnering several awards. I sold another short about a cab driver who takes a former pop star on a Twilight Zone–like ride, which should be hitting the festival circuit any time now.
I grew up in Michigan, was features editor of my school paper, the Eastern Echo, was managing editor of Out magazine for seven years, did a two-year stint as editor of a Hollywood Reporter–type magazine focusing on the gay porn industry and work now as a developmental editor for a publishing house.
I've lived in LA for a few years now. Got a great partner, a fantastic circle of friends and a demon of a familiar named Holly. I love cats and carbs, would like to be a pop star, and am a member of the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle and a card-carrying member of Mensa.
