Hello Readers!
This is the Pre-Read thread for the June 2021 Modern Classic/Popular selection. This month we will be reading Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel.

Please note that this is a SPOILER FREE discussion.

Who's planning to join in on this read? What are your expectations in picking this book up?

Cheryl (cherylllr) I doubt I'll read this again this month as I've already read it three times.... Wonderful book; I hope you all like it.

The Lazy Reader (icy_blues) I will read this! Thanks for hyping it up Cheryl :D

Audrey (stuckonchapter13) | 1 comments I bought my copy a while ago so hopefully, I get to finally read it next month!

Paddy Gillespie | 48 comments Very interesting read. Finished it in April. The first chapter is alarmingly similar to what many of us experienced last March before deviating from the second chapter onwards.

message 7: by Megan (new)

Megan I'm going to join in! I've heard it described as a more literary dystopia, so I'm intrigued by that.

Melissa (mkk2715) | 208 comments Started this awhile ago on audio but was finding it hard to follow about 40% into the book -decided it would be better to physically read but haven't gotten to that yet so I'm glad it's on our list.

Laura | 28 comments i hope to join. I have been wanting to read this for a long time but never got to it. Let's see if i can make time for it. So many good books to read!

Woman Reading (is away exploring) | 485 comments I listened to the audiobook in January. It's eeriely similar to our present time because the author was inspired by the first coronavirus epidemic (SARS in 2003). I won't reread but I do recommend as it's more hopeful than horrific. I had written a spoiler-free review for it - www.Goodreads.com/review/show/3733879098

Elysa (ebees) | 5 comments For me, this one is not so much an "everyone has read this but me" but a "I bought this at a thrift store years ago and never read it" hahaha stoked to take it off of my TBR :)

Just started this book and was pleasantly surprised that it begins in Toronto, my home town. The locations mentioned are well-known landmarks which I have often visited and brings back lots of fond memories. I'm sure the story will take flight soon, but so far, it's a great read!

fleurette | 198 comments I may read it. It doesn't look like something I usually read, but I've heard some good things about this book so I guess I'll give it a go.

Travelisfers | 1 comments I’ve been meaning to read this forever! I found it on my laundry room, so took it as a sign that I really need to read this now!

message 15: by lethe (new)

lethe | 102 comments I read this five years ago and even though my review wasn't 100% positive, the story has stayed with me ever since. I actually thought of rereading it last year, but the library was closed at the time.

I'll be following the discussion with interest!

Melissa (melissa12345678) | 42 comments reading this now and oh.my.gosh. sooo similar to the coronavirus. kinda creepy actually but soo engaging. I need to see what happens next! only 1/4 read so far......

message 17: by Anna (new)

Anna (gohomeannakin) | 13 comments Just checked it out from the library. I'm an actor myself and a fan of dystopian settings, so definitely looking forward to this one.

message 18: by Shelley (new)

Shelley I read this several years ago and really enjoyed it. It has been long enough that I have forgotten the details. Maybe I'll try to fit a reread of it in this month.

message 19: by The Lazy Reader (new)

The Lazy Reader (icy_blues) "'Are you sick?' Jeevan was pushing the cart toward the door.
"Good night, Jeevan." Hua disconnected and Jeevan was alone in the snow. He felt possessed. The next cart was all toilet paper.'
-this part made me laugh out loud.

message 20: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1 comments I didn't want to read it last year but now, why not?

message 21: by fleurette (new)

fleurette | 198 comments It is certainly not something that I would choose for myself. Reading this book in these times is a really disturbing experience. It was difficult, but I'm glad I read this book. It was great.
