Can anybody become a superhero like Spider-Man or Super-Man. Well, meet Flora, who believes that as long as there are good people in this world, anything is possible, or what she believed anyway. Her father, George, is a failed comic book author who has taken a job at the local supermarket store and her mom, Phyllis, is a romance novelist who has hit a writer’s block. Their hardships caused them to split last year, according to Flora, who is a cynic, and now they are deciding on a divorce. One day, while playing in the yard, Flora and her neighbor chase after a Ulysses vacuum when a regular squirrel gets sucked inside of the vacuum as it is dying, because the vacuum is out of charge. After giving the squirrel CPR, the squirrel lives and Flora takes him home, naming him Ulysses after the vacuum. The next day, Flora discovers that Ulysses has written something on Phyllis’s typewriter. A page saying “Squirtel. I am. Ulysses. Born anew.” Flora is quick to learn that Ulysses has powers and is sentient as well. Flora meets William Spiver, who suffers from hysterical blindness due to stress, and tells him all about Ulysses. When George arrives at Flora’s house to check on her and Phyllis, he and Phyllis discover Ulysses and Phyllis tells George and Flora to get rid of Ulysses. At the dinner, Flora tells George that Ulysses has superpowers and while Flora is telling him this, Ulysses get into trouble with Rita, the waitress and tries to fly over her head, only to smack into a wall. Flora and George grab Ulysses and take him to George’s apartment while Rita calls Miller, the animal control expert. Flora and George take Ulysses to see Dr. Meescham, who saiys that Ulysses is fine. Rita believes that Ulysses has rabies. Later, Flora and William visit Stan Lee’s comix book store, where on the tv they see that Miller is after Ulysses and they race home to tell George. George has quit his job at the supermarket and meet up with them. They hide at George’s apartment but Miller follows them and tries to get at Ulysses. They manage to escape and hide out at Flora’s house. Phyllis reveals that she is stressed out about an interview with a publisher. The publisher says that Phyllis has reached a dead end. Phyllis then takes Ulysses to the woods to get rid of him but, realizes that she can not go though with it. Flora and William then head to the woods to rescue Ulysses and hide in an abandoned water park where William says that he pushed his stepfathers car into a lake because he miss his father. They all find each other at the water park and Miller comes, trying to get Ulysses. Ulysses uses his powers to defeated Miller and the family explains that Ulysses doesn’t have rabies. Miller doesn’t listen and captures Ulysses. He is taken to the animal control compound and put into a cage to await death when the family runs in to save him. William regains his sight, Ulysses is freed and lives free in the woods while Miller and Rita go on a date.
