Alina | 58 comments Violet, Klaus and Sunny are going to what they think is V.F.D. After Mr. Poe hears about a program called “It takes a village to raise a child”, he lets the orphans choose where they want to live. The orphans choose V.F.D., thinking that it might lead them to Duncan and Isadora Quagmire, who were kidnapped by Count Olaf for him to gain there famous Quagmire sapphires fortune. When the orphans can see the town, miles away from the bus, the bus stops and the bus driver says to them that the town has specific rules and because of those rules he cannot take them any closer to the village. Violet, Klaus and Sunny, who is being carried, walk all the way to the village and see it to be a ghost town with no one in it. The orphans go to the town hall, where the village is holding a meeting to introduce their new chief of police, Office Luciana and her Detective Dupin. The village says that the orphans must obey the rules of V.F.D. while they live here and that Hector will keep them in his home. While walking home, the orphans explain their adventures so far to Hector and explain to him what happened to their friends the Quagmires. Hector says that he wishes that he could help the orphans but, he is afraid of sticking up to the elders of the town. They start talking about poetry when Hector gives them a couplet that he found near the Nevermore tree that the crows of the town rest on. The orphans are sure that Isadora Quagmire has written the couplet and they want to find out where they are hiding in the town. So, they ask Hector if they can take turns watching the tree to see if anyone comes to put a new couplet that leads to Duncan and Isadora. The orphans watch the tree all night and don’t find anyone placed any clue near the tree but, they instead find another couplet written by Isadora. They wondered how it got there all though breakfast and doing the Villages chores. While cleaning the V.F.D.’s fountain, an elder of the town comes up to the orphans and Hector, telling them that Count Olaf has been captured. The orphans are quick to jump to conclusions as they join everyone in the town hall meeting to decide what must be done with him. The village decides to burn Count Olaf to stake but, when the village reveals Count Olaf, it actual turns out to be Jacques Snicket, Lemony Snicket’s brother. The next day they find another couplet and Violet says, based on reading this couplet, that Isadora must ne referring to the first couplet that Hector gave them. They also have to devised a plan to save Jacques from being burned at a stake, save the Quagmires, and escape V.F.D, all without getting caught with mechanical devices: rule #67, with a library or books that break any other rules: rule #108, or biting things for enjoyment: rule #4,561, which they will have to do in order to escape with the help of Hector and his secret stash of rule-breaking things in his barn. Can the Baudelaires save the Quagmires and escape from Count Olaf and Esme’s hands or will they have to choose who goes to live with Count Olaf and who gets burned at the stake?

I have watched the Netflix series and the episode got all lot of things correct. Here’s what didn’t happen --- Jacques and Olivia arrive at the village (this isn’t true because no Olivia is mentioned it the books even though Jacques is in the village), Olivia convinces Esme to release they in exchange for the location of the sugar bowl, Olaf and Esme kill Jacques (It is never mentioned in the books who killed Jacques but I guess it was Count Olaf, Esme wouldn’t like to get her hands dirty in that kind of way.), The episode never mentions the mortar-dissolver that Violet makes before hand to weaken the bricks of the jail, Larry and Jacquelyn arrive quickly to distract the village so the orphans and the Quagmires can escape using a fire truck, They use the fire trucks ladder to climb up to the hot-air balloon. These events never happen in the books or the episode skipped some parts of the book to keep in episode under 22 to 24 minutes. I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars
