TraceyL | 1069 comments I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but I looked through the rules and didn't see anything about it.

How are we defining female? Someone who uses she/her pronouns? Specifically I'm thinking of reading The Discomfort of Evening by Marieke Lucas Rijneveld. Their wiki says they identify as both genders, and use they/them pronouns in English but she/her pronouns in Dutch (their native language). The wiki also mentions that they were bullied in school for their "boyishness" making me believe that they were assigned female at birth.

Thanks!

Hannah | 449 comments Hi! I wonder if I could use a book for this task that is in a language that is not my primary language, which was translated, but I still read the non-translated version.

So my primary language is dutch. I read a book in english (which did have a translated version in dutch, but I preferred to read in english).
I hope that makes sense...

You may read a qualifying book in any language.

Hannah | 449 comments So what language would qualify? I’m not sure what you mean, sorry about that.

If the book was written by a female author in a language other than Dutch, you may read the book in English, Dutch, or any other language.

Emily | 782 comments I want to use Strange Beasts of China by Yan Ge for this task. Yan Ge's Goodreads profile gives almost no information. I was going to link to Wikipedia in my post, but can't, so can I get her gender approved here? Wiki says that Yan Ge is the pen name of Dai Yuexing, and she is female.

A slight variation on "what is a female"?

I ordered the following book from my library for this challenge: Mrs. Mohr Goes Missing. I began reading it, and now discover that this pseudonym is actually a couple of guys.

The GR author info for Maryla Szymiczkowa is in Polish for the copy I am reading. (English is my native language). When put through the Google Translation, the first part says: "Maryla Szymiczkowa, widow of a hardcover subscriber of Przekrój, queen of the writer, former star of Piwnica pod Baranami and proofreader in Tygodnik Powszechny. Today, every Sunday, after the sum in St. Mary's, you can meet her for a coffee at Noworol's, and in the evenings in the New Province."

So, is an author portrayed as a woman a woman, regardless who actually writes it or not? Does this one fit the spirit of the task?

I suspected that, but thought it was worth verifying. Thanks.
