Also, I’m thinking of making a secret/ private group just for the BNU mods. That way if we want to discuss something but don’t want group members to see the chat (like picking a new mod, or coming up with new challenges and/or questions, etc), we can do so.

What do you think of a survival based / get off the island reading challenge??

I don’t really have any ideas thought up, and it also wouldn’t be for a while. . . . But what are you thoughts??

I’ll post more later (probably tomorrow), but I just wanted to hear your thoughts.

Okay, so here's a bit more info, since I have a bit of time right now. . . .

Original concept is the same. You're stranded on an island, and you're trying to get back to civilization with your team. The island is mineral–rich and is surrounded by numerous shipwrecks, including your own.

So what I'm thinking is that each person who signs up will pick out a team. Each team has pros and cons, both in general and when it comes to surviving and getting off the island. Participants will also work on teams, trying to get off the island. (Maybe as characters?)

You get off the island by reading books. Different prompts lead to different tasks needed to get off of the island. (For example, maybe — Go fishing for food = Read a book that involves fishing; or Chop down trees for lumber = Read a book in which trees are either planted or cut down; etc.)

As you can probably tell, I still have a very vague idea of what I'd like to try.

The biggest problem for me is not to make it too complicated. But I also want it to be fun and engaging.

What do you guys think of it?

I think this is really cool and creative! It would just be a lot of research. So like would we give each person the task and then they have to go find a book like the task?

So books / reading would be incorporated.

There’s be a series of tasks that would need to be completed in order to get off the island. Each task would a set of book(s) that would need to be read in order to complete said task.

Aside from that general idea, I’m still not sure how it would actually work, but I’m thrilled you like the idea!

I think this should be a team thing because it would be a lot for one person to understand in my opinion

I’ll probably drop all these ideas into a google doc, so it’s easier to organize and plan it. The link will probably be in the other group (the BNU mods group), when I finally get to that. But that’ll probably be a little while.

Also this challenge probably won’t occur for a little while. I think it’s be better to do when there’s more members and more participation.

And yes, I think (somewhat) monthly challenges will be a good thing. I know I fairly recently applied to be a challenger mod in the Meet Other Readers group (still awaiting for whether or not I am a mod). One of the application questions was like “What challenge ideas do you have?” I have a writing challenge idea, if you’d be interested in something like that.

I had meant monthly reading challenges, but the writing challenge kinda sounds cool. . . . However, I'm not sure if we should even implement that idea quite yet.

Yeah, I knew you meant reading challenges. I was just talking about the writing challenge idea. We definitely don’t have to do it if you don’t want to. Perfectly fine with me :) I just though I’d bring it up

But Guys I really think we should have a readathon because we have had a lot of challenges and THEY ARE AMAZING but we try a readathon and I have experience with Readathons to make it greats

Well you are the Readathon (and Reading Challenge) mod! So if you want to create a readathon, go for it! If you have questions, you can always run it past me and Emary. Or you can post it in the BNU mod group, if you want it a secret

I would recommend setting the readathon for the month of August, since the 50/50 reading challenge continues until July 20
