I'm about to start The Black Company, this month's r/fantasy book club read.

I'll post if it's action-packed.

Kind of stalling on The Black Company. Picked up Seventh Son for my local book club. It doesn't look any kind of action-packed, but I'll post here if it is.

Bradly Byykkonen | 2 comments I'm currently reading A Feast of Crows, the fourth in The Song of Ice and Fire series, by George R. R. Martin. Interesting--great writing--but I wouldn't call it action-packed. Too many stories going on at a time, so it's hard to keep track of everything and everyone, but some of them are very good. I haven't read the first three--I've seen the first three seasons of Game of Thrones on HBO, and I bought the fourth book to kind of read ahead. Not sure if I should have done that.

I haven't read the series or watched the show. Is each book the equivalent of one season? How is it going making the transition between show to book?

Seventh Son has no action whatsoever thus far, but it's an easy read. Kind of boring. Some people at book club rave over it. I guess I'll see if it gets any more exciting, since I have maybe 30-40% left until I'm finished.

Oh, I should mention, I'm listening to The Rookie audiobook. It's by Scott Sigler.

It's been recommended to me several times, and I like it so far. It's not been super-action-packed, since it's in the middle of info-dump right now. I hope this set up leads to more action, though. I haven't read too many entertainment sports-themed books. I'm hoping this will be a good one.

Bradly Byykkonen | 2 comments I'm told the books are the equivalent of one season of the show (Game of Thrones), for the most part, but not entirely. And I guess they do deviate from the overall plot a little bit. From what I read, George R. R. Martin has said this next season is going to deviate quite a bit from the books. That might actually be a good thing. The books are getting huge with so many plotlines going on at once, so I think it would be a bit overwhelming to try and make a 10-part season cover each book. The books are certainly good, but I can see why making some changes for the series is probably a good idea.

Seventh Son had no action to speak of. A lot of people at my book club really enjoyed it, but I'm kind of meh about it. Just too slow for my liking.

The Rookie was definitely action-packed. And in a very different way than I normally find. The overwhelming majority of the action is sports action.

I liked it a lot, in part because I listened to it and the audio production is insanely good. They have the crowd noises, announcers, and sports talk radio.

Definitely recommend.

I'm starting The Peripheral now, and it's been slow. We'll see if it picks up in the action.

Tom Wright | 40 comments Mod
So... The Peripheral was 2/3 confusing, and 3% action. I don't know what to think of it, but don't go looking for action there.

Just finished Empire in Black and Gold, and it had a lot of decent action. I definitely recommend giving it a try (but I'd check out my review first for a word of warning.)

I finished Red Rising and whoa, that book is pretty action-packed. I'm not sure how I feel entirely (it is similar to the Hunger Games, and I didn't care for the Hunger Games too much), but that book is just action after action after action.

I'm working on The Grace of Kings right now, and so far it's pretty calm. Time will tell.

And I just finished Golden Son. Another book of action scene after action scene. And I definitely recommend it much more than the first, Red Rising.

What a book. What a page-turner.

I finished Grace of Kings. It started slow, but wound up to a big finish. However, as it wasn't action-packed all the time, I'll leave it off the group shelf.

I'm now reading Batman: No Man's Land, and I'm very hopeful for some good action.

Claire Horner | 7 comments Right now I'm reading some Doctor Who comics, then I was wanting to start Legenderry: A Steampunk Adventure Legenderry A Steampunk Adventure by Bill Willingham , but there are a few I was thinking about. Speaking of Batman another is Batman Hush by Jeph Loeb Batman: Hush

I'm still in Batman: NML, and I just started Orconomics: A Satire (it's our local book club pick, my nomination).

message 17: by Tom (new)

Tom Wright | 40 comments Mod
Finished Orconomics, and what a great read. Not as much action that I would include it in this group's bookshelf, but I still highly recommend it.

Jimmy Briggs | 3 comments Nothing at the moment, but was gathering all my Green Lantern New Guardians #1 by Tony Bedard Green Lantern: New Guardians #1. The link is for the collected edition but I am going to go through issue by issue. As for books and novels not sure I'm going to start one yet. Still have comics to read.

I just finished No Such Thing as Werewolves by Chris Fox, and it was pretty good. I'm wavering on whether or not it was action-packed enough for this group... but I think I'll add it.

I'm excited for the sequel.

I finished Ms. Marvel, Vol. 1: No Normal and No Mere Zombie.

Ms. Marvel was good, but I wish I knew her power set before going in. I'm glad for the representation in the comic.

No Mere Zombie was good, too, and definitely action-packed. I listened to it, so it took me a while to finish, but it's a fast read that I enjoyed.

Evil Genius was not action-packed at all, and I didn't care for it beside that.

I'm in the middle of The Dinosaur Lords and Crooked, and I've got high hopes for each.

message 22: by Tom (new)

Tom Wright | 40 comments Mod
Kind of have a laundry list to put up here:

Finished The Dinosaur Lords, Armada, You're Never Weird on the Internet, and Crooked.

Dino Lords had some action but was not action-packed.

Armada was action-packed, and I liked it more than Ready Player One.

You're Never Weird on the Internet was a memoir, so obviously no action there.

And Crooked had almost no action to speak of, but was a very good book in terms of relationships and characters.

So of those, Armada was the most action-packed.

I'm about to start The Martian and Seven Wonders. And Brandon Sanderson's new novel is almost here, Shadows of Self. Very excited for that one.

Unlike literally everyone else in the world, I didn't care for The Martian too much. It just wasn't as suspenseful as everyone makes it out to be for me.

I read Time Salvager by Wesley Chu and enjoyed it, but with some reservations. I'd recommend it, though. It had enough good action for me.

Okay, I finished Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut. Not an action-packed book.

I also read NPCs by Drew Hayes. Definitely had some action in it, and I liked it.

Loved Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson, and it had a great amount of action in it. Maybe not as much as Alloy, though. Hmm.

Also read Super Nobody by Brent Meske. Not a ton of action, and kind of weird.

Whew. I've got a few books to add.

Alif the Unseen by G. Willow Wilson was good, but I wouldn't say action-packed.

Destroyer by Chris Fox was fun and action-packed. This one is going up on the group shelf.

I liked The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North, but it wasn't action-packed.

Morning Star by Pierce Brown was unadulterated action, through and through. I had my problems with it, but there's no denying that this is an action-packed book.

The Builders by Daniel Polansky is action-packed and hilarious. The ending left something to be desired, but the journey was fun.

Slow Getting Up: A Story of NFL Survival from the Bottom of the Pile by Nate Jackson isn't super-action-packed, but it's an autobiography of sorts, so there's that.

Brandon Sanderson does it again in The Bands of Mourning, an action-packed book that's great fun to read.

Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey was action-packed... I think. I'm trying to remember now, it's been a bit since I read it. I'm going to go with action-packed.

I don't think Chris Fox knows how to write action-free books, thank goodness. Vampires Don't Sparkle is a great addition to the No Such Thing as Werewolves series. Plenty of action, fun book to boot.
