Ann (annrumsey) | 16959 comments I was almost overwhelmed by the book and found it gripping, compelling, sickening and sad. Summarizing hasn't come easy, so if anyone else has better details to share you are welcome to.
This third part is Takedown
Chapters 18-24 titles are Cognitive Dissonance, Harlem Park, Guilty, Cops and Robbers, Possibilities and Probabilities, The Abyss Stares Back, The Place to Be.

The corruption investigations found illegal searches, extortion and robberies and massive overtime theft. The seven Gun Trace Task Force officers were so loosely managed they could get overtime while on vacation.

The takedown was at risk for leaks and flight, but managed to net the suspected cops. Hundreds and hundreds of cases were impacted where it was the word of the cops over the victims of their crimes. Umar Burley, serving federal prison time was interviewed, vindicated, released and part of the case.

Some of the accused asked for deals, some protested their innocence (Jenkins) and one (Sean Suiter) dies under suspicious circumstances that many would consider suicide and an attempt by Suiter to have it come across as an on duty incident. Four end up pleading guilty, and three are to go to trial.
Jenkin's pal, Stepp, the bail bondsman and drug dealer is caught in the net and turns on Jenkins who then decides to plead guilty too.

The Police Commissioners have changed multiple times through the years of the book, and that in itself is a story of attempted changes, push back, and more than one hard nosed attempt to tamp down on crime "the way NYC had".

With two officers going to trial, the details emerge as they might not have otherwise and the complicity of sweeping investigations under the rug for years, thus protecting the Gun Trace Task Force members takes down some of the brass. BUT their failure was generally found to be failure to supervise, and not participating in the crimes.
A reasonable person has to ask how they could have missed what was going on under their noses. Umar Burley was free, but continuously pulled over by police. Jenkins is scheduled for release in January 2039.

Sandi (sandin954) | 1276 comments At least there was a small amount of justice and Jenkins ended up in jail. I was wondering though where all the money went. It was touched on briefly but no one seems to know. There were numerous instances of Jenkins being at a casino so he might have gambled it all away. Jenkins just had no moral compass at all. It did not matter whether it was petty insurance fraud, fudging overtime, or just plan stealing he was up for it and I am glad the judge did not go lightly on him.

While this was a well reported book about the facts of the case I just did not think I got the full picture of any of men involved. No real why and I really had a hard time differentiating among them except for Jenkins.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16959 comments Sandi- agreed, where did all that money go / especially Wayne Jenkins. I also had a hard time differentiating between the various officers. After going back to summarize it got a little clearer but not a lot.
I expect the tv mini series under development will help.

Yes I am looking forward to the mini series and hope it fleshes out some of the characters.
