Sarah | 1 comments From what I remember the book, or maybe it's a series? is about a girl who lives with her aunt or grandmother who is really into herbs and uses them for medicine. I think the aunt or grandmother gives the girl lavender to protect her. There's a guy who can shift into some sort of animal (I think it's like a dog or a wolf but I could be wrong) and he has a bone that allows him to do that. He is being chased by wolves and somehow enters the girl's world from his own because the queen wants him dead. The girl meets him in the woods and he tells her about this world that is connected to hers through some sort of portal. The queen who leads that other world is really cruel and horrible and I think at the end the girl kills her, maybe with an arrow and I remember the queen's blood like seeped into the ground. I vaguely remember this other world having treehouses and being a very snowy place. I read this definitely after 2010 probably around 2013.

Amazon's preview of Winterling by Sarah Prineas - Becca's suggestion:

Kirkus Review:
- "Young Fer (short for “Jennifer”) loves her strict Grand-Jane and the herbal lore she teaches, but she feels more at home in the woods and fields than in the concrete and iron cage of her school. When she rescues the shapeshifting puck Rook, Fer opens a Way into a place of wild beauty, deep magic and strange half-human denizens. The land’s glamorous Lady claims friendship with Fer’s lost parents and begs her allegiance, but Fer senses something deeply wrong..."
