Our buddy read continues with Targeted by Kendra Elliot in June. This is the final book in the Callahan & McLane series before we cross over into the Columbia River series, and it's a stunner! Let's open discussion on the 15th.

All Detective Mason Callahan wanted was a quiet fishing trip with the guys—a chance to get away and unwind before Halloween.

Until he finds the body of his boss, Denny Schefte, near their remote Oregon cabin. Now all he wants is to catch the sadist who slit Denny’s throat and covered his face with a mask. Mason was the last person to see him alive and will stop at nothing to find his friend’s murderer.

When the FBI learns of the mask left at the scene, they realize they have a serial killer on their hands—one who is targeting cops. They assign the case to Special Agent Ava McLane, despite her engagement to Mason. Barely recovered from her own nearly fatal injury and her sister’s attempted suicide, Ava hopes she is ready to chase another killer.

But as she delves into the increasingly disturbing case, the killer may be closer than expected—dangerously close.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 603 comments Finished. I agree, it was the best in the series. Can't believe the trouble these two get into. And (view spoiler)

I really like this couple and glad they get re-visited after the Mercy series.

Sandra, what is our next read?

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3060 comments Lisa You are right. This couple gets in a lot of trouble.

The next one is The Last Sister, Columbia River #1.

Lisa - I posted a couple of days ago...have no idea what happened to my post! Next up is The Last Sister (Columbia River, #1) by Kendra Elliot

Robin (robinmy) | 1391 comments I finished this one and loved it. Yes, Ava and Mason do seem to get themselves in hot water quite often.

Did anyone figure out who the killer was before the end? I was totally lost and guessing the whole time. For a while I was worried that Zander had been kidnapped by the killer when no one could reach him.

Thanks Sandra. Have got it from my library, all ready to read next month.

I worked it out a little before it was disclosed. The clues pointed to someone at the Cops for Kids organization and Scott was the one mentioned the most.

Same here...I had strong suspicions before it was revealed. But very well done!

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3060 comments Robin I'm with you. I'm so bad at guessing the killer. I didn't figure it out until close to the reveal.

I was thinking the same thing about Zander. I wasn't sure if it was a personal problem, or if the killer got him. I loved the scene when Ava went to his house to talk to him.

Me too. I'm glad he is going to show up in the next series of books.

Robin (robinmy) | 1391 comments I liked the resolution to Jayne's story. When Mason got the call that Jayne had left rehab with a man, I felt so bad for Ava. Jayne isn't going to get any better until she admits there is a problem and commits to getting better. I was happy when Ava talked to her and Jayne said she had voluntarily entered a different rehab.

Me too. I don't know how successful Jayne will be in the end, but at least she is taking a step in the right direction.

Yes! I liked this twist also. I was sure she was off on another binge. I am pulling for her to make it.

Robin (robinmy) | 1391 comments For a little while, I wondered if Ava was the next cop on the killer's list. I thought with her twin sister out of rehab and running around, the killer might try to kill the wrong woman. Glad that didn't happen.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 603 comments I remembered when we were reading the Mercy series it mentioned that Mason's colleague had been killed. For some reason I thought it was his buddy Ray that was going to be next, I mustn't have taken it in it was Denny.
