The Magic Number Challenge July 2021

How it works:
For this challenge, 3 is the magic number ☺

To earn points in this challenge, simply read and review as normal, but if you would like to earn your team some bonus points, then tell us if your book has a '3' associated with it ☺
3's you can use:
* Book has a 3 letter word in the title.
* Book has 3 words in the title.
* Book has the number 3 in the title.
* Number of letters/characters in the title is divisible by 3 (must equal a whole number) (includes letters, numbers, and punctuation).
* Book has the same word repeated 3 times in the title.
* Title contains one letter that is repeated 3 times (must be exactly 3 times).
* Title contains three words which all begin with the same letter.
* Book has only 3 words in total across the title and author's name (not including 'by' or any series name).
* Book has a number of words across its title and author's name that is divisible by 3 (must equal a whole number).
* Book has an author with a 3 letter name.
* Book has an author with 3 names.
* Book has 3 authors (must be exactly 3, you can count translators, editors, illustrators, narrators etc.).
* Book is 3rd in a series.
* Book is part of a trilogy (there must be 3 primary works).
* Book is a number in a series which is divisible by 3 (must equal a whole number), Eg: 3, 6, 9, 12.
* Book has a page count which has the number 3 in it.
* Book has a page count which is divisible by 3 (must equal a whole number).
* Book was published in the 3rd month of the year (March).
* Book was published on the 3rd day of any month.
* Book was published in a year with a 3 in it - 1938, 1993, 2003, 2013 etc.
* Book was published in a year which is divisible by 3 (eg: 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, 2007, 2004, 2001, 1998, 1995, 1992)(must equal a whole number).
* Book has an average rating which has a number 3 in it.
* Book has the number 3 in its number of ratings, or number of reviews.
* Book has the number 3 in its ISBN/ASIN.
* Book is 3rd on a listopia list. (Please link us to the list when posting.)
* It is the third time you are reading the book.
*** Please remember that things like average ratings, number of ratings, and number of reviews can change. If you think that the number for your chosen book might change to not include a '3' before you have finished the book, please message me to check it prior to reading it, or take a screenshot. If your book does not meet the description you have posted it for because a number has changed, it will not count. We will however check to see if it matches one of the other descriptions wherever possible***
***Please Note:***
- Books must be started and finished in July to earn bonus points.
- You will only receive bonus points once, no matter how many descriptions your book matches.
- Bonus points will be given to the same value as page points. (If your book has 300 pages, you will receive 6 page points + 6 bonus points = 12)
- Alternate titles must be made up of English letters, although we will accept titles with accents over letters such as á, é, í, ó, ú.
- Numbers in titles can be used, but are spelled out, so '1001' would be 'one zero zero one', '20' would be 'two zero'. So a 1 or a 2 could be used for 'three letter word in title'
- For this challenge, you may use words that occur after punctuation in a title, including after a colon ':'
- You may also use author's names, or the names of any editors, translators, narrators or illustrators. Please link to the edition you wish to use.
- Minimum page counts for claiming bonus points are the same as minimum page counts for page points (see points below)
- You may add together page counts to reach these minimums, but you can only add together page counts of books that are under the minimum. These should be posted together.
- You may use one edition for page count, and another edition to for a 3.
- Books started before July can be used for page points +/- buddy read points, but you will not be able to claim any bonus points.
- Books can be used which don't fit the descriptions, you just won't earn any bonus points.
- Words such as 'Don't' count as one word, but hyphenated words such as 'Shut-Up' count as two words.
* If your book has none of the above 3's associated with it, but does have a different 3, please check with us, and we'll let you know if we will count it ☺
Examples:

3?: Part of a trilogy=Dark Artifices Series

3?: 3rd in series

3?: Author has 3 names - Richie Tankersley Cusick

* Books must be read between the 1st of July and the 31st of July 2021 inclusive. Books started before July may be used, but you will only earn points for pages read in July, and will not be able to claim any bonus points. Please let us know how many pages you have read in July when posting your review.
* Minimum page counts to earn points are as follows -
-- 50 pages - YA/Adult/NA/NonFic without illustrations/photographs/diagrams etc.
-- 75 pages - middle-grade and children's books without illustrations/photographs/diagrams etc.
-- 150 pages minimum for poetry, books written in verse, manga/graphic novels, books which have some illustrations, and plays.
-- Books which are mainly illustrations, such as some children's books, picture books, and some non-fiction books etc. cannot be used as part of this challenge.
* Middle-grade, and children's books without illustrations/photographs will earn 1 point for every 75 pages due to the reduced word count. This applies to all books which are tagged 'middle-grade' or 'children's' more times than they are tagged YA. This includes Goosebumps books, The Wind in the Willows, the Magisterium series, and The Secret Garden to name a few.
* Books which are illustrated or have photographs will receive 1 point for every 150 pages. If your book has an illustrator listed or is tagged 'illustrated', then it will fall into this category.
* A list of editions of some of these books, which we consider not to be illustrated can be found on our challenge rules thread here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... These are the only editions of these listed books which can be used to earn points as a book rather than an illustrated book.
* A list of books which have a modified page count to account for illustrations, which can then be used as a regular book can also be found here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
* Manga, graphic novels, plays, poetry, and books written in verse will receive 1 point for every 150 pages due to reduced word count. If your book is tagged 'Sequential Art', 'Graphic Novels', 'Comics', 'Manga', 'Poetry', 'Verse', 'Play', or words to that effect, then it will fall into this category.
* Books may be added together to reach these minimums, as long as all books are under the minimum. You can't add a book to another book which counts on its own.
* Book samples may be used to earn page points, but cannot be used to earn bonus points, and must have a page count published on either Goodreads or Amazon to count.
* You are welcome to read physical books, ebooks, and audiobooks for this challenge, and you are also welcome to read in any language as long as you provide us with an English translation of your review/updates either as part of your review, on your team's review thread, or by personal message to myself.
* If for any reason you are unable to publish your review on Goodreads, it can also be sent to myself via personal message. Please continue to post on your team's review thread as normal, stating 'review sent to Sarah by personal message' after 'Review:'.
* Re-reads are allowed in this challenge, as long as it has been at least 8 months since you last read the book. (For this challenge that would be books finished before November 2020) You will need to write a new review or updates though please. We recommend that you post on your review '2021 re-read', or something to that effect so that we can easily see what your new review is.
* If you have started reading a book previously but not finished it, you can read it and have it count as long as you are starting again from the beginning in June. If you are restarting a book, or have added the book to your currently reading shelf early, please let us know when posting, or do a status update at 0 pages when you start so that we know.
*A review or 4 detailed updates will be required for each book read.
*Buddy reads must have a minimum of 4 comments to count, and comments must be detailed, and about the book. We also expect you to discuss the book with your buddies, not just post updates and leave. Comments must also be different from your review or status updates. If your buddy read comments, and your review or status updates are identical, then you will not receive points for both until they contain different details.
* Buddy reads must take place within this group (YA Buddy Readers' Corner ♥) to gain the extra points. You can see which buddy reads are already planned each month here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
* You should not start a buddy read more than 7 days before the start date, or more than 14 days after the start date, or the last comment on the thread, whichever is later. If you do need to change the date, check with your buddy as they may also be able to start early/late with you.
* Group Buddy Reads can be joined to earn buddy read points, but only GBRs for July 2021 will count.
* Please post the link to your buddy read along with the book you are reading and the start date on the 'Planned Buddy Reads' list for the correct month - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... If you continually schedule buddy reads and fail to post them on the planned buddy reads thread for the correct month, then we won't continue to give buddy read points. This is because it is important that everyone is given the opportunity to join.
* There are no set books which need to be read, any book which fits within the rules will count, so books can be chosen by the reader. Please check with us before reading if you are unsure whether your book counts or not.
* Bonus points will be given as detailed in the 'points' section below.
* Please only post one review per comment on your team's review thread, unless you are adding the books together to reach a minimum page count.
* This challenge will begin and end on Goodreads time, which is Pacific Standard Time - https://greenwichmeantime.com/time-zo... The challenge will start at 00:01 on June 1st 2021 PST, and end at 00:01 on July 1st 2021 PST.
* You are welcome to start the challenge on the 1st of the month in your own time zone, but you must also finish the challenge on your own time zone. Please let us know if you are doing this, as Goodreads may time stamp your books as being started on the last day of the previous month.
* Whilst you may start on your own timezone, the challenge will still end on Goodreads time, so even if you start late, you cannot end late.
* Higher page count editions may be used when claiming points for pages, but page counts for iphone/ibook/ipod/itunes editions will not be accepted, and neither will page counts for audiobook editions of any kind, or miniature versions of books such as Flipback, dwarsligger, PenguinMini (you are still welcome to read in these formats, but must use a different page count). We will also not accept a page count which is more than double the next highest for that book. (ie: if there are 4 editions at 200 pages, and 1 edition at 2200 pages, we would not accept the 2200 page edition as it is more than double the next highest at 200 pages.)
* We request that you leave us a link to the edition with the page count that you are using if the book has multiple editions with different page counts.
* Please do not go back and alter posts once they have been counted, if you need to make a change, please make a new post on your team's review thread, with a link to your original post, and then explain the change, for example; a higher page count edition has been found, or a buddy read needs to be added, and please include links.
* We do reserve the right to not add additional points when posts have been amended, as it may be unclear how many points were awarded the first time.
* Our regular challenge rules can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
*** If you are not sure if your book counts, please ask before you read it. Questions can be posted on this thread, or sent by personal message to myself.***

★ YA/Adult Books (without illustrations) - *1 point per 50 pages*
(view spoiler)
(Maximum of 12 points per book)
★ Middle-grade/children's books (without illustrations) - *1 point per 75 pages*
(view spoiler)
(maximum of 8 points per book)
★ Graphic novels/manga/poetry/plays/books written in verse/books which have some illustrations - *1 point per 150 pages*
(view spoiler)
(maximum of 4 points per book)
★ Buddy reads MATCH your points score for pages, so a 300-page book (6pts) + buddy read (6pts) = 12 points.
(view spoiler)
(Bonus points for buddy reads will only be given if the buddy read has taken place in this group.)
★ If books are long enough to count on their own (50/75/150 pages) they will be scored on their own.
If you read two novellas of 80 pages each, you will receive a 1 in the books read column as together they are over 100 pages, and 1 page point for each (2 points total), as each book is individually long enough to earn points. This applies to all types of points.

★ Bonus points for matching a description will be awarded based on page count, the same as page points and buddy read points.
(So if you read a 300-page book and are awarded 6-page points, you will earn an extra 6 points for matching a description. The same maximums apply, as apply for page points.)
★ Mods will keep track of each teams points, using the following system -
Team Name:
__________|_Books_|_Buddy_|__Page___|_Bonus_|__Total
__________|_Read__|_Reads_|__Points_|_Points|
Name______|___0___|___0___|_____0___|___0___|_____0
Name______|___0___|___0___|_____0___|___0___|_____0
Name______|___0___|___0___|_____0___|___0___|_____0
Team______|___0___|___0___|_____0___|___0___|_____0
★ We will be tracking how many books you have read, but you will not receive points for this column.
The minimums to earn a 1 in the books read column are -
* 100 pages - YA/NA/Adult/non-fiction book (without illustrations)
* 150 pages - Middle-grade or children's book (without illustrations)
* 300 pages of graphic novels, poetry, plays, novels written in verse, and books with some illustrations etc.
(You may add books together to reach these numbers if you would like)

This challenge will be a team challenge. We will have a small number of teams, with a mixture of readers in each. You can also choose to go solo ☺
Teams will be posted by the end of June. If you sign-up after teams are posted, we will try to add you to a team, but we may not always be able to. You may be asked to join a waiting list. Please sign-up as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
Thank you! ☺

Q - Can we get bonus points if we're rereading a book?
A - Yes, you can ☺
Q - I have a question, most descriptions are stated this way
“ * Title contains one letter that is repeated 3 times (must be exactly 3 times). “
Does this mean it has to be only in the title? It can’t be in the author’s name?
A - That would be in the title, but you can do it over the title and author if you wanted to, or just the author's name. Just let us know when you post ☺ You should be able to find a 3 for most books ☺
Q - I’ve got a quick question, if a book contains multiple threes, do we get bonus points for all of the threes that apply?
AHi, I'm afraid you only get the bonus points once no matter how many threes there are ☺
Q - Sarah, I was wondering if we can claim points for a book you haven't finished? So I DNF'ed And I Darken, can I still claim points for the buddy read I did and the number of pages I did read? I was reading through the rules, but I couldn't find an answer!
A - Hi, yes you can use DNFs, you just can't earn bonus points with them. Just let us know how many pages you've read in July when you post on your team's review thread ☺
Q - So no buddy read points right?
A - You can claim buddy read points as long as you've made 4 comments, the points will be the same as page points ☺

This will be a team reading challenge which will run from July 1st 2021 to July 31st 2021. Results will be announced on August 1st/2nd 2021.
To complete this challenge, participants will be split into teams. Each team will read books of their own choice (which fit the challenge guidelines), and points will be awarded based on the length of the book, and whether you have buddy-read your book. You can also earn some bonus points by reading books which have 'The Magic Number' (we'll explain below)☺
You may also choose to take part in this challenge as a solo participant ☺
