JackAttack Hey all :) If there are no objections I'd love to read Dangerous Girls for this challenge - it's been on my to-read list for awhile :)

message 3: by Katrina (new)

Katrina Schroy And I would like to read Black City

message 4: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine Lake | 237 comments I would like to read Drowned.

message 5: by Ramneek (new)

Ramneek | 175 comments Hi guys, really excited for this challenge!
The only books I can get access to are Dangerous Girls and Black City but I see you guys want to read these books so I don't mind doing a swap/drop once everyone has decided :)

message 6: by Mia (new)

Mia (souffezgirl) The only one I have access to of the last two is These Gentle Wounds, though I have to be honest, the subject matter makes me more than a little uncomfortable. I suppose I'll give it a try though.

message 7: by Katrina (new)

Katrina Schroy mia I was uncomfortable with the subject to but I'm glad your willing to take it on I can't wait to see what you think of it

message 8: by JackAttack (last edited Feb 07, 2015 08:14PM) (new)

JackAttack Unfortunately I do not have access to These Gentle Wounds or The Art of Being Normal either.

I'm more than willing to read w/e though. Mia - if you'd rather not read These Gentle Wounds and no one else can get it, I say lets drop/swap those two (unless someone objects) and when we get the new batch of books we can decide from there.

message 9: by Mia (new)

Mia (souffezgirl) Thanks Jackie. Yeah, I do think I would rather pass on it. It's just a little bit too intense, so if you guys would be okay with dropping or swapping it, that would be fantastic. Sorry for the trouble.

message 10: by JackAttack (new)

JackAttack I looked up both books and found a couple books under each category (Mental Health and GLBT) I would like to read and have access to. We can only drop one book - Should we put both in the swap area letting others know we can't access them and see if someone switches?

message 11: by Mia (new)

Mia (souffezgirl) That sounds good to me. If I understand this right, whichever one doesn't get swapped could be dropped?

message 12: by JackAttack (last edited Feb 08, 2015 11:16AM) (new)

JackAttack Yes - and in its place we can do:

- Another book of their choice from the same author.
- Another book of their choice from the same genre.
- 2 books chosen by the moderators.

Sounds like Katrina is doing Black City, Jasmine is doing Drowned. Ramneek is OK dropping/swapping, so I'll go ahead and post them in the swap area. :D

message 13: by Ramneek (new)

Ramneek | 175 comments Thanks for posting Jacki!

message 14: by Katrina (new)

Katrina Schroy Sounds good to me

message 15: by JackAttack (new)

JackAttack Swapping the book may not go so well - looks like a lot of other groups are set with their picks. Katrina and Jasmine - I know you had picked one of the other books, but is either of you able to get one of the the books in question and willing to read it?

message 16: by Katrina (new)

Katrina Schroy I don't have access to the two in question or I wouldn't have minded switching

message 17: by Katrina (new)

Katrina Schroy So I found a copy of these gentle wounds so the black city is up for grabs

message 18: by Mia (new)

Mia (souffezgirl) Thank you so much Katrina! You're pretty much a superhero right now!

I guess that leaves Black City and then swapping the Art of being normal. I'm starting to realize how rubbish my library is, since it doesn't have Black City :( Were you still interested in reading it Ramneek? If so, I can see what I can figure out for the drop (If you're still up for reading Dangerous Girls Jacki).

All of this kinda feels like a really complicated math problem XD

message 19: by Ramneek (last edited Feb 11, 2015 12:07AM) (new)

Ramneek | 175 comments Thank you Katrina! I would definitely read Black City but I also don't mind dropping one of the other books if it comes to that :)

message 20: by JackAttack (last edited Feb 11, 2015 06:52AM) (new)

JackAttack Yay Katrina!!!!!!! Our Hero :D

I'd love to still read Dangerous Girls! Mia - its pretty much up to you then for dropping. There are a lot of good books from the GLBT genre:

GLBT genre

Sooooo....
Me - Dangerous Girls
Katrina - These Gentle Wounds (yay!)
Ramneek - Black City
Jasmine - Drowned
Mia - dropping (book to be determined)

This sound right?

message 21: by Katrina (new)

Katrina Schroy Sounds right to me :)!

message 22: by Mia (new)

Mia (souffezgirl) Thanks for the link! It made it super easy to find a book. I'll go with Every Day by David Levithan (hope it fits the brief). Will post in the drop section later, if that's okay.

message 23: by JackAttack (new)

JackAttack Just read that book recently. Its pretty awesome :)

message 24: by JackAttack (last edited Feb 17, 2015 06:35PM) (new)

JackAttack Ok so I finished Dangerous Girls - took me all of a day to read because it was THAT addicting. I can't even begin to tell you how crazy this book was. Although the plot/characters are way different it kind of reminded me of Gone Girl a bit. Had me guessing right up to the end.

So couple of things that stuck with me -

1)Have I really been out of high school long enough that this is how 16-17 year olds act?? Parties, alcohol, long unsupervised vacations (booze-cations? sex-cations?) OUT OF THE COUNTRY, prescription drug abuse (no big deal, right?), 'regular' drug abuse, sex with strangers...seriously I can go on. It fits the story - but really?? High school? Aside from the obvious issue (view spoiler)) - the author doesn't really convince the reader that all this is a bad idea - makes it seem sort of glamorous. I realize things are getting a lot more edgy (and possibly realistic) but its hard for me to come to terms that all this material is in a book about high school aged kids and have it be no big deal.

2) It is absolutely crazy to think how innocent social media posts/pictures, written stories, jokes, etc can be spun to come back and haunt you.

Definitely worth the read if you are a fan of mysteries/thrillers.

"We want, we take, we have. It's simple. "(pg 171) . These kids are crazy.

Katrina Schroy OK so I finished these gentle wounds and here's my thought first off There are hooks and then there are hooks. I couldn't fathom the beginning of this novel which captured me right away into this novel. In a lot of ways it brought me back to why I loved The Perks of Being A Wallflower even though as a reader I normally go for more of a romance and adventure type plot. I also tend to gravitate away from male narrated novels because as a female I feel like I can't relate, but that didn't deter me away from These Gentle Wounds.I loved at times we saw the raw effects of what happened to Gordie displayed in Helene Dunbar's writing. Her writing style made me enjoy the book more because it put you into the mind set of someone who has post traumatic stress. At the same time it was an easy book to read and was a very fast read for me. I was also a huge fan of the relationship between Kevin ad Gordie, they had a great connection as half brothers but it was also very different because of what they have been through. all in all I didn't think I would actually like this book when I took it but it actually was really good and I reccomend this book so all in all I give it ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I'm actually very sad after reading your review that my library doesn't have These Gentle Wounds :(

Will add to my to-read list and hope either that changes in the future or I can find at the cheap-o bookstore!

message 27: by Katrina (new)

Katrina Schroy yes Jackie I would highly recommend it I thought I would be very uncomfortable reading it and I didn't think I would even get into the story at all but it really surprised me

message 28: by JackAttack (new)

JackAttack How are the rest of the books going?? Anything wonderful??

message 29: by Mia (new)

Mia (souffezgirl) Just finished the drop switched book, which ended up being Every Day by David Levithan. I gave it 3 out of 5. I really wanted to like it a lot more than I did and the premise of it was quite interesting, but for some reason it just didn't really wow me the way I thought it would and there were times when it felt a little bit preachy, which kinda pulled me out of the story. So yeah, an okay book, but probably not one I would reread.

message 30: by Ramneek (new)

Ramneek | 175 comments I finally finished Black City!!
Very disappointed as I couldn't really get into it, I guess I've just slightly gone off the dystopian genre. It was kind of filled with cliches and things that you can find in any of the other dystopian books. The romance between the heroine and hero was very dramatic and caused severe eye-rolling. I don't really have much to say except that it was a bit silly and I had to skim read the last few chapters
