What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I read this around 2015-2017.
The cover of the first book is a dark blue with a person half-turned. There's a pentagram on the cover as well.

The main character is picked on by others, but discovers he has magic. Unlike most heroes at this point, he is actually really weak and can't access his magic very well. At one point, he goes to an academy with other magicians like him, they train, and they all get a magical pet. He gets a pet salamander/newt that everyone thinks is super lame and weak, but it eventually turns out to be a wyvren.
I think they can also travel through a sort of gray shadow realm, but they have to watch out for the bad sorcerers and not stay in there too long.

The Summoner series by Taran Matharu? The first book is called The Novice.
