Donovan is the farthest colony from the Solar System, a harsh and deadly environment rich with precious minerals. The residents have been outside direct Corporation control for years, surviving and building a community while waiting for resupply ships to arrive. Turalon is the latest ship to travel to Donovan after not hearing back from several previous ships traveling by the same complicated and mysterious physics. Hanging over them all is the reappearance of the supply ship Freelander, sent not long before Turalon but somehow lost for centuries and haunted by the dead.
This is a sci-fi survival story with a mixed cast on an exciting planet with a dose of political jockeying. I really like the planet and am curious about the outcome of the aliens and missing ships, but didn't really connect with much of the main cast. For such a long book I did get through it quite quickly, so that's a plus for the story. Slightly annoyingly the end of the book was really just the set up for the larger multi-part series.
