Theresa | 15524 comments Anyone else notice that you can no longer link to see who has tagged a book a specific tag? And also what else they shelved under that tag?

I noticed first a few days ago but was using a device and having other issues with GR, it was late, etc. However it now seems to be permanent. Ticks me off even though it only really worked when a low number of pages of tags for a book. It was still real handy sometimes.

Example: The Hookup has been tagged twice as filthy-rich - https://www.goodreads.com/work/shelve.... You can no longer click on that 2 people and see whose filthy rich shelf it is or to see what other books they have shelved the same.

Now that book has 48 pages of tags. I checked a book with only 9 pages of tags - Return to Virgin River which has 1 person tagging it con-rom on p. 8 https://www.goodreads.com/work/shelve.... No longer can click and see what else that person has shelved con-rom.

Apparently the tags don't help them sell books so they don't care about that function.

Robin P | 5744 comments I never realized this existed, is this a privacy issue? Unlikely that GR cares about privacy though.

Anyone can set their privacy settings to block any but friends from seeing what's on their shelves, so I'm sure it's just another step in GR changes which all seem to be targeting the ability to use tags in any general or public fashion - i.e for challenges.

Karin | 9218 comments It's not a privacy issue since we can set our privacy to our comfort level, they are removing feature after feature. Another feature that is gone is the events one you used to have in groups that some groups used for things like Zoom book discussions, etc. And it does help sell books if it is about books.

Theresa | 15524 comments One more thing that seems to have changed: severe limits on how many reviews I can upload sequentially here in PBT.

I got really behind on writing and posting my beach reads reviews. I had a couple of webinars today that allowed me to catch up. I wrote 5, and then started copy paste them to Beach Reads. After 3 they blocked me from posting any more.

This so irritating.

Booknblues | 12060 comments Well, that would have wreaked havoc with our poll ballot challenge last year.

That was my thinking. I went back about 30 minutes later and had no trouble adding the 2 reviews.

However, those who wait until the very last hours of the month to post monthly need to be aware.

Yup... I noticed that a week or two ago. I was assuming they just gave up on it since it didn't work half the time (or more) anyway.

Yup, losing the Events sucks. Many of you have seen me mention the Virtual Silent Book Club that I "attend" at least every 2nd week, though some of them meet almost daily. They are scheduled daily, anyway. They use Events all the time.

I was actually going to suggest we start using it for our PBT meetups just when I saw that they are taking it away. But then, you might have to be an admin of the group to set up Events; I'm not sure.

Oh, that's annoying. I haven't been posting reviews to GR, but I was planning to adapt my Pbt reviews one day, and post a bunch at one time.

That's too bad. I found some really interesting people that way, with similar interests to my own. It was ridiculously slow, so maybe it used too many system resources.

I think they are trying to group similar tags together now (like travel and traveling), which makes sense, but it must be tedious work. This is something we'll have to look at in a few months, to make sure that our core tag list is still relevant.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11071 comments Has everyone reviewed the BETA formatted book descriptions?

We should all review them and make comments about the missing tag information. They need to know how important they are to many people.

Joy D | 10082 comments I have used the feedback to report that groups on their site use these tags and want to be able to see all of the tags, not just the top few. We need as many people as possible to report this issue. I hate to think how our group would continue to function without access to how a book is tagged.

I am still using the old mode so haven't come across this problem yet. When I have tried to go to Beta, I don't get feedback options.

I believe they are doing this to try to curtail the spammers who join just to post dozens (or hundreds) of messages touting porn or herbal medicine or .... whatever.

It really causes havoc with moderators who have big challenge groups and have to post multiple new challenges each month.

I am in old mode too Karin. These are not beta changes.

That makes sense, BC.

I normally do reviews as I finish a book and post then wherever I am going to post them because I like writing review when fresh and letting them pile up turns what is fun into work. However, I am sometimes too busy or tired from work.

Just good for all to know so can plan.

message 19: by Joy D (last edited Jun 26, 2021 10:48AM) (new)

Joy D | 10082 comments I know they are not beta changes. I just wanted to make a plea for everyone to report that we actually use the tags - all of them, not just the top few. We will be severely impacted in our group if they take away the ability to view all the tags.

I have experienced the issue you are speaking of - when I try to post multiple reviews back to back, I get locked out for a while, so I have taken to posting one per day.

message 20: by LibraryCin (last edited Jun 26, 2021 11:47AM) (new)

LibraryCin | 11684 comments I only post a lot of reviews at once when I'm updating books that I have a review for, but the review didn't carry over from shelfari. I don't do that often, though. And there's usually at least a few minutes in between, but that varies.

The good news is that they are making it harder for spammers.

I haven't bothered finding missing Shelfari reviews for some time because it often means signing into LibraryThing which I don't really use so I don't have my password memorized, etc. I use long, complicated passwords and a different one for every site, so I only have so many memorized (and only on keyboards since most of them are memorized partly kinesthetically due to symbols)

I doubt that they care how we use the site.

I am trying to figure out how to stop ads for a news program I detest keep showing up on GR, they obviously didn't look at what books I read before showing me ads.

message 23: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 10082 comments I would hope they care how we use the site since we are prospective customers who buy things on their parent company.

I know there are ad blockers you can download. I get annoyed with them too but haven't taken the time to block them yet.

message 24: by Booknblues (new)

Booknblues | 12060 comments I use an adblocker here. So many sites have figured a way around it and I have to disable it, but so far it works here.

message 25: by Karin (last edited Jun 27, 2021 12:57PM) (new)

Karin | 9218 comments I don't have a problem with ads, between my ISP settings and my anti-virus, etc, etc, software. Some sites have annoying ways around that, but not GR, thankfully.

I am less likely to buy something from an annoying ad than a normal ad on the side of a page--I wonder how they manage to make money from those irritating ones? My 20 something kids hate those, too.
