Winter (winter9) | 4998 comments Hi everyone!

Time to nominate for September is Evolution.

~Please remember to state a connection to the theme when you nominate.

~Books we have read less than three years ago are not eligble. To see which books are not eligble, see this google sheet:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

~ Each person can nominate 1 book.

~ Book must be available both as a physical copy and as an ebook.

~ Authors: Please do not nominate your own book.

~ Please do not nominate books that are part of a series, unless it is the first book.

~ You can second someone else's nomination, but that will count as your nomination.

This thread will be closed by July 26th, and we will choose ten books for the poll. If there are more than ten books nominated, we will choose "seconded" books first. If there is still a tie to get into the top ten, we'll go back to the Goodreads average rating to see which is highest.

Noelle Rolle | 13 comments I’d like to nominate The Fifth Season. It’s a post-apocalyptic fantasy novel on climate change and a fictional form of evolution of the earth. It won a Hugo Award and got great reviews. I also think our earth and climate change issue is a very timely, important and necessary topic to read on and explore and I’ve heard great things about this book.

Ashleigh Motbey (ashybear02) | 1686 comments The Fifth Season is an amazing series ^^ but since I've already read it, I'm going to be nominating something else!

I'd like to nominate All Our Shimmering Skies. It is set in Darwin, Australia. Darwin is a city named after Charles Darwin, who is, of course, the most known person when it comes to evolution :)

Sean (fordest) | 301 comments I will toss out Extinction by Thomas Bernhard. The connection is the title: Extinction being the byproduct of evolution and/or the result of a failure to evolve.

message 5: by Valerie (last edited Jul 01, 2021 05:00PM) (new)

Valerie Reyes | 1148 comments I nominate Leonora in the morning light by Michaela Carter which traces the evolution of Leonora Carrington from a lonely childhood in Northern England to a life as a famous surrealist artist in Mexico.

message 6: by Bobbi (new)

Bobbi (schadenfreudian) | 628 comments What about evolution "helped along" by human hand? I would like to nominate Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton.

message 7: by L Y N N (new)

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) | 2389 comments I would like to nominate A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron which describes Bailey's evolution through several lifetimes as different dogs. Bailey's lessons from one lifetime follow into future lives. It is heartwarming and thought-provoking!

message 8: by Eirelyn (new)

Eirelyn (ladyeirelyn) | 1244 comments I second A Dog's Purpose. :D

I have been thinking of rereading this one so I will second it :)

Meghan L | 380 comments I second Jurassic Park.

message 11: by TerryJane, Challenges (new)

TerryJane | 4031 comments Kurt Vonnegut's Galápagos would be a good fit. This satire tells of a small band of people who are marooned and must adapt and evolve -- as have the animals of Galapagos -- in order to continue as a species into the future. It has science fiction, dystopia, humor and plenty of food for thought. An oldie, but goodie.

message 12: by Ilona (new)

Ilona | 4698 comments How about The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin? Darwin's theory of natural selection is an important part of evolution.

message 13: by D.L. (new)

D.L. | 1515 comments I'll third Jurassic Park :)

message 14: by Karin (new)

Karin | 228 comments I'd like to nominate Mrs. Wiggins by Mary Monroe Mrs. Wiggins

message 15: by Bernadette (last edited Jul 19, 2021 09:02PM) (new)

Bernadette (bernadettedaniel) | 215 comments I would like to nominate Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. Cold Mountain examines the evolution of human relationships in tandem with the seasonal changes and variations of the natural world.

message 16: by Ann (new)

Ann (hammiam) | 221 comments I would like to nominate Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir.

"Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission--and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.... Alone on this tiny ship that's been cobbled together by every government and space agency on the planet and hurled into the depths of space, it's up to him to conquer an extinction-level threat to our species."

In an interview, Weir described the alien life form in the book as having "evolved" from a single, common ancestor.

Good book. :D (If I hadn't just read it last month, I'd consider seconding it.)
