I see that too - I opened it multiple times only to see the same last post

what do you mean by status updates?

message 155: by Meredith (new)

Meredith | 1777 comments It doesn't show the place to update reading progress for the books "currently reading"

I think GR is just having a glitchy day. It's been having issues for me for a couple hours.

message 156: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments I agree with Meredith. It’s been worse and worse the past few days. I think it’s just the volume of people doing year end posts.

message 157: by Markus (new)

Markus | 26 comments Same problem here - I can't update my reading progress anymore... and the Android Apps works instable...

Michelle (michellehartline) | 3171 comments Same. It's very irritating.

message 159: by Meredith (new)

Meredith | 1777 comments I was able to update my book status using the app (iOS). whew!

It's still not there!! This kinda ruins the schedule of my day. I usually update as part of my morning/evening routines. This is just ... wrong.

message 162: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1230 comments I was able to update the same way I usually do using an android tablet and the web page. Not super helpful but maybe supporting the, just glitchy, idea.

message 166: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments It's been that way for me since yesterday afternoon. They'd announce the removal of a feature that so many people use (presumably), so I'm assuming it's just an unusual level of activity making things go temporarily wonky.

a.g.e. montagner (agem) | 667 comments This topic might have been around already; especially because many of us aren't native speakers of English.

I wish profiles on Goodreads had a feature organising books by language: e.g. in my case mostly Italian, English and Spanish. I'd find it very useful to be able to check at a glance how much I've practiced a foreign language (in the case of Spanish, not nearly enough!).

Is there a way of doing this, other than using tags?
I'm currently batch-editing my entire shelf, but with +1K books it's going to take a while.

message 169: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Not on GR :( Tags are the only way that I know of.

(It's possible on TSG though.)

message 170: by a.g.e. montagner (new)

a.g.e. montagner (agem) | 667 comments And aNobii had a drop-down menu which I found useful, for once.

Well it's good to know I haven't missed a major function of Goodreads, since I've just finished batch tagging every book in my profile.

message 171: by Sebastian (new)

Sebastian | 31 comments Help! My yearly challenge says I read 27 books but it only lists 21. Is there any way to check whether the count is wrong or books are missing? My "read" list displays the same 21 books for this year. Unfortunately, I only know that the last few weeks aren't missing any books, but I'm not sure about the beginning of the year. Does anyone have that problem as well?

You have a lot of duplicates on your challenge. Look at the list, you can see the duplicates next to each other. You need to remove the extra read dates. See

https://help.goodreads.com/s/article/...

message 173: by Sebastian (new)

Sebastian | 31 comments Thank you so much, Faith! Where did you find the duplicates? In my read list and my challenge list, no book was listed twice. I only found the duplicates when I went in to edit the read dates. And each duplicate had no start date, only a finished date. Any idea how that happened or how to avoid it in the future?

When I looked at your challenge, I saw several duplicate books side by side. I don't remember any titles. I don't know what causes the duplicates, but I know that the problem occurs frequently. I sometimes get them when I hit the Read button by accident.

message 175: by Sebastian (new)

Sebastian | 31 comments That's weird. Oh, are you on the desktop version? I'm on the app and saw no duplicates there.

message 176: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments GR causes duplicates to happen all the time. I check for them periodically, but also *every single time* I mark a book read, I search my shelf for it right after to see if it has an extra read marked. It doesn't happen so often to me now, because I make sure to mark things as read *exactly* the same way every time, so I can see it happening when it does.

message 177: by Faith (new)

Faith | 386 comments Sebastian wrote: "That's weird. Oh, are you on the desktop version? I'm on the app and saw no duplicates there."

I never use the app.

message 178: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6118 comments anyone else having tons of books w/o covers? I posted in a thread about the problem and received this in reply:

There's a bot going around merging editions and in the process the covers are broken. You can submit a request on here for one of us to undo the changes. Just make sure to link to all the broken books

As I have over 100 books since late 2022 (I didn't even count the rest) that's a lot of research and copy/pasting. I think I've done 20 so far and they're fairly fast about fixing them

Hi,
I think this happened on a Sunday, so tomorrow it will be four weeks. I haven't done anything about it until now bc I kept thinking it was a glitch that would be repaired.

My impression is that it is mostly Kindle book covers.
Here is an example, broken cover:
Come, My Beloved by Pearl S. Buck
for
Come, My Beloved by Pearl Buck.

The same ASIN - ISBN on Amazon.com shows a cover for the Kindle edition:
www.amazon.com/Come-My-Beloved-Pearl-...

So YES Chessie I also had a bunch of covers disappear then. Have you or others learned anything more?
(Thanks)
🤓

Miri__ | 6 comments Hello, I hope this is the right thread to ask:

I just wanted to check out the spoiler option. I joined GR actively today.

I used html formatting. Now the problem: It worked when I did it and checked my comment on the desktop version. However, when I checked my comment here on the app, the spoiler was not hidden. I tested it without producing a real spoiler, but can someone help me ?

Welcome!!

Ah yes, you have found our bane. Basically, spoilers do not work on the app. On iPhones, it just says (view spoiler) but is not clickable. On Android it says (spoiler) and then shows the entirety of the item in the spoiler tags. Our recommendation is to use the website version via your phone's browser, not the app, for anything forum related, unfortunately.

Miri__ | 6 comments Thank you, Allison, for the Reply! I really thought I did something wrong, since I am not that tech savvy.

I will stick mostly to the Website then!

Thanks so much, CBRetriever! Those links are really helpful. I hadn’t thought about looking for discussions based on what I’m currently reading—makes a lot of sense!

I’m trying to be more active here, but it’s a bit overwhelming with so many discussion threads. Do you have a favorite sci-fi or fantasy discussion that you check regularly?

what I do is go to Goodreads and then click on the 2nd of the four icons to the left of my profile icon (when you hover over it, it will say "My Group Discussions") and see what's new. Sometimes someone (possibly you in the future) will often post to a thread I've never seen more. and I'll join in. It's a good way to dip your toe into the water.

That’s a great tip! I hadn’t thought about using ‘My Group Discussions’ that way. I’ll definitely start checking it more often to see what’s new. Thanks for the advice—hopefully, I’ll be the one posting interesting threads in the future!

Yes for sure! There's no need to read every single one. I'll say the "What else are you reading" thread is quite popular and a good way to start talking with folks without feeling the need to read hundreds of posts.

CBR's ideas on posting about books you're reading or just checking the "new posts" in threads is a good way to get involved too.

a.g.e. montagner (agem) | 667 comments Is it (still) possible to add different editions of the same book, e.g. in different languages?
I've done it in the past but seem unable to now; either I've forgotten how, or the settings have changed.
Thanks!

you should have a List View (mostly text) as well as a Grid View (covers only)

That's how I have my library set up, but the search function does not follow that setting (I am on IOS if that makes a difference).
