Read a book listed on either the Guardian’s 1000 Novels Everyone Should Read list or Boxall’s 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die.

These 2 lists have been around long enough to have a solid following and established groups on Goodreads of readers trying to read ALL the books on them. For this challenge, your task is just to read one book that appears on one of these lists. If you enjoy book club style reading, the Goodreads groups focused on these lists select monthly books to focus on, and have great discussions on them.
Which books are you considering for this prompt?

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 566 comments I'll be reading Everything Is Illuminated which is a PotM in the Reading 1001 group, and has the added benefit of also being on the Guardian list.

If people are interested in reading a book that's on both the Boxall list and the Guardian list, I have created an overlap list on Listchallenges (although I shamefully forgot to include Mary Barton by Gaskell). The list is here:

I have other books I am also hoping to finish from the BIG lists this summer too, but since I started it as an audiobook today, it looks like my book for this prompt is Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West, by Cormac McCarthy. This one so far is pretty gruesome, but it is also a Western. It is very similar to All the Pretty Horses so far, a young man's adventures south of Texas.

Update: Finished the audiobook. I really don't recommend this book. It is well researched, and historical fiction, which just makes the vicious, violent bits more disturbing. It would work as a Western, and is on both the Boxall and the Guardian list, but there are so many other better books for both prompts. :)

I just happened to already have on hand a few classics in audio free from audible plus. So I am currently listening to Jane Eyre Performed by Thandie Newton by Charlotte Brontë

I also read Alberta and Jacob, by Cora Sandel, which is on the Boxall list. It's a classic Norwegian novel, and was pretty good, about a pair of kids growing up on an island in northern Norway. With how hot it has been here, reading about a cold place was maybe refreshing, though mostly I just felt jealous.

The entire Discworld series by Terry Pratchett is on the Guardian list, so I suppose my nightly bedtime story habit also works for this prompt. I like to put on one of my favorite Discworld audiobooks at night as bedtime stories (Nightwatch, Jingo, Wee Free Men, The Last Continent, Men at Arms, The Colour of Magic/The Light Fantastic).
