Prompt 4- Nonbinary Character Aug2021
date
newest »

Thanks Elizabeth. If my library does not kick me out for writing in a book, I will be able to borrow a Lumberjanes book from Hoopla.

I did not know/realize that Jo was trans! I do remember in one of the later graphic novels someone explaining that Barney's pronouns were they/their.

I'll be reading a the first book in a series that was mentioned on the Dewey's FB page:

As far as I understand it, everyone is considered non-binary there until they grow up and declare their gender.

I would say no as Murderbot is not a human. That's realllly pushing the limits. lol. Murderbot is genderless because it's a robot. Not because it feels it is. It's a fact.
i need suggestions for this one. Most of the ones I've read with LBGTQIA+ it is a gay or lesbian or bi character, not a non-binary character.

Limits are there for pushing and I think an androgynist robot fits the bill especially if gender doesnt have to be the focus of the narrative.

Huh! I never picked up on the April/Jo flashback photos!

I'm doing the same accidently. I'm reading Making Money which has a golem who identifies as a woman, except before this all golems have been basically non-binary but assigned male by society. It's Terry Pratchett so the jokes are very deadpan about why shouldn't they be wearing dresses if they want to?
I went with An Unkindness of Ghosts, by Rivers Solomon for this one.
Sarah Waters has a few novels that fit this prompt- The Night Watch is an excellent historical fiction novel about female ambulance drivers during the London Blitz. Fingersmith is about a girl in a Dickensonian London who falls victim to a tricky identity-theft con.

i opted for an LGBTQIA+ book instead of a more specific non-binary gendered book. So - COMPLETED
Two of the main characters are a teenage female couple but it's not the main plot point. It's on the sideline.

I hadn't thought about Making Money as fitting this prompt, but I guess it does. Fun. :)

The more I read books that feature LGBTQ characters, the more it bugs me that so many of these books build their plots around 'coming out' and the fact that one or more of the characters are LGBTQ/non-binary. What are some good books in which non-binary/LGBTQ characters are involved in a murder investigation, spy plot, a crumbling relationship, space exploration, etc.?
