Read a book in which at least one character is non-binary/LGBTQ gendered, where this is a character trait, NOT the central conflict of the narrative.

The more I read books that feature LGBTQ characters, the more it bugs me that so many of these books build their plots around 'coming out' and the fact that one or more of the characters are LGBTQ/non-binary. What are some good books in which non-binary/LGBTQ characters are involved in a murder investigation, spy plot, a crumbling relationship, space exploration, etc.?

Elizabeth | 316 comments Barney in the Lumberjanes series is non-binary (and Jo is trans). This is so not-central to the overall plot of the series that it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that Barney probably identified as non-binary and I had completely forgotten that Jo is trans.

Thanks Elizabeth. If my library does not kick me out for writing in a book, I will be able to borrow a Lumberjanes book from Hoopla.

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 2454 comments The Girl of Hawthorn and Glass (The Girl of Hawthorn and Glass, #1) by Adan Jerreat-Poole YA fantasy, one of the MCs is non-binary.

I did not know/realize that Jo was trans! I do remember in one of the later graphic novels someone explaining that Barney's pronouns were they/their.

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 566 comments I didn't realize Jo was trans either! I just thought she was tall and based on Jo from Little Women!

I'll be reading a the first book in a series that was mentioned on the Dewey's FB page:
The Black Tides of Heaven (Tensorate, #1) by Neon Yang
As far as I understand it, everyone is considered non-binary there until they grow up and declare their gender.

I would say no as Murderbot is not a human. That's realllly pushing the limits. lol. Murderbot is genderless because it's a robot. Not because it feels it is. It's a fact.

i need suggestions for this one. Most of the ones I've read with LBGTQIA+ it is a gay or lesbian or bi character, not a non-binary character.

Limits are there for pushing and I think an androgynist robot fits the bill especially if gender doesnt have to be the focus of the narrative.

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 281 comments Regarding Jo being trans, I'm reading Lumberjanes right now (just finished volume 12) and it's so subtle in the story! Basically there are a few times when you see pictures of her and April when they were little kids, before Jo transitioned. Then there's the one volume where Jo seems mad at Barney (the one with the giant bird that steals the van?) and she says that it's because Barney reminds her of herself in the past.

Huh! I never picked up on the April/Jo flashback photos!

I'm doing the same accidently. I'm reading Making Money which has a golem who identifies as a woman, except before this all golems have been basically non-binary but assigned male by society. It's Terry Pratchett so the jokes are very deadpan about why shouldn't they be wearing dresses if they want to?

I went with An Unkindness of Ghosts, by Rivers Solomon for this one.

Sarah Waters has a few novels that fit this prompt- The Night Watch is an excellent historical fiction novel about female ambulance drivers during the London Blitz. Fingersmith is about a girl in a Dickensonian London who falls victim to a tricky identity-theft con.

i opted for an LGBTQIA+ book instead of a more specific non-binary gendered book. So - COMPLETED
I Am Margaret Moore by Hannah Capin
Two of the main characters are a teenage female couple but it's not the main plot point. It's on the sideline.

I hadn't thought about Making Money as fitting this prompt, but I guess it does. Fun. :)
