Nancy Bruen | 20 comments Hello,
My name is Nancy, and I've been reviewing books for NetGalley for several years. I am a retired language arts teacher. I taught reading for grades 5 - 12 for 30 years. What a wonderful profession! Sometimes I would be juggling five books at the same time depending upon my schedule. My students truly developed a love of reading through my novel based curriculum. But now that I am retired, I get to read what I want!

Kevin | 47 comments Hi Nancy. Welcome to the group. I developed my love of books through a teacher who inspired me and I'm sure you have inspired many to develop a similar love. What books do you have via Netgalley at the moment? I'm in the UK (Scotland) so sometimes the books available on my Netgalley are different to those in the US but many crossover and let me join in some buddy reads. P.S. I see you are reading God of the Woods at the moment - hope you are enjoying as I loved that book

Welcome, Nancy! Teaching reading is a wonderful profession. I would have loved to do that.

I also loved God of the Woods, Kevin.

Hi Kevin!
Thank you for your kind words. It was wondeful discussing books with my students all those years. I worked hard to get them to "see the movie in their brains" while reading. I always told them that if commercials came along, they would have to stop, figure out where they were in the book when they began daydreaming, and then begin again from there.

I just finished "Finding Grace" by Loretta Rothchild. I really enjoyed the perspective for that one. It was quite unique! I just got approved for "The Lies They Told" by Ellen Marie Wiseman, but I haven't started it yet. What are you reading now?

It was a lot of work, but well worth it. I highly recommend it!

Carl Reads (carlreadsbooks) Hi and welcome Bethany and Nancy! We have the best mods here, so feel free to pester them. It might feel overwhelming the amount of posts, but ultimately it serves to the great organization.

Christine | 2 comments Hi friends! I’m Christine, originally from the U.S., but I’ve been living abroad for the past 13 years—home has become a bit of a moving target, but always filled with books. I’m fairly new to sharing my book reviews, though I’ve been quietly writing them for myself for ages. In a previous life, I was a YA/teen assistant librarian in school and public libraries, helping young readers find their next favorite escape. These days, you’ll usually find me with a mug of tea and a small mountain of books—because I can never read just one at a time. I’ll read almost anything, especially if there’s a good story at the heart of it.

That sounds lovely, Christine. When I was younger I needed the stability of a constant home, but as I've gotten older I feel like I'd love to do some traveling for a while. Where in the world are you spending time now?

Welcome to the group. I look forward to chatting about books with you.

Welcome Christine! Working in a library - what a dream job! As part of my "extra duties" while teaching, I was always assigned to assist the librarian. I LOVED it . . . and it was so much better than lunch duty!

message 172: by Charlene (new)

Charlene Roberson (txcharley) | 1 comments Hi, I'm Charlene. I read on NetGalley and am FINALLY learning not to request EVERY book that catches my eye! I find that too often the book just doesn't capture me - and there are too many more to MAKE myself read a book I don't like. I read 60+ books a year and love finding new authors and series. I belong to a local monthly bookclub, where I have discovered - and rediscovered- good authors. ?

message 173: by Kevin (new)

Kevin | 47 comments Hi Charlene. Welcome to the group - you're going to have to tell me the secret of how to stop requesting every book on Netgalley as I'm about 4 years and 580 books down the line on Netgalley and I still can't stop requesting. Do you have any books on Netgalley at the moment that you are planning to read soon?

message 174: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 2899 comments Mod
Welcome, Charlene! I can completely relate to trying not to request every book that looks interesting. Unfortunately, there's never enough time to read them all, but there are so many good ones!

Shruti morethanmylupus (morethanmylupus) | 1111 comments Welcome Christine & Charlene!

message 176: by Carl (new)

Carl Reads (carlreadsbooks) Hello and welcome! Keep perfecting restraint, Charlene. I am successfully not requesting everything that catches my eye. I am adding the ones I'm interested in with a specific tag, and organising them by publishing date. One month or two prior to publication, I check how many books I have that month, and if time allows, I'll request it. It also allows me to rethink if I want to request the book I saved in the first place.

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 1528 comments Good system, Carl!

message 178: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Zimmerman | 4 comments Hello, I've been trying to become a lot more consistent in getting reviews out on time. I've finally discovered the tagging system, and it's been a lifesaver for my request amounts. I mostly read A mix of thrillers, romance (predominantly queer), and science fiction. I work for parks, so I also read a healthy amount of nonfiction, and it's what has given me more reading time.

Welcome, Nicole. That's a good mix of genres. What do you mean by working for parks? Is that like Parks & Rec? Always curious about jobs that give people extra reading time. :)

Yes, parks and rec! I'm able to get through audiobooks on days when I'm checking the trails and read books during slow seasons.

Nice! Every time we go to a park that has someone in a booth checking/selling passes I always think they must have some great reading time when it's slow.

debbicat *made of stardust* (cr8zycat) | 128 comments Morning! I think I have been in this group for a long while, but never joined any reads or interacted much. I was in a reading slump after my dad died in April. Knowing had to find a way out of depression and I had a lot of NG books to read (my ratio had gone down with no reading for months) I popped in here and began looking at what y'all were reading. I like to read with friends and discuss. Fortunately, NG has been kind and has been approving me for some of the same books you guys are reading, and I have been leaning into buddy reads this summer.

Anyway, I am Debbie. I live on the Gulf Coast. I have been reviewing for NG since 2015. I am enjoying the buddy reads in this group and it is nice to make new reading friends.

message 184: by Kevin (new)

Kevin | 47 comments Hi Debbie. So sorry to hear about your dad. I can understand losing the motivation to read when something like that happens. What books do you have at the moment?

Nice to see you've discovered the joys of Netgalley and look forward to hopefully buddy reading soon. What is your first Netgalley book? And what type of books do you normally read?
