Deep Red is a 1975 Italian Giallo film directed by Dario Argento. it is often regarded as the greatest Giallo of all time because of how it perfects all of the iconic Giallo characteristics. It stars David Hemmings, Daria Nicolodi and Gabriele Lavia. It follows Marcus Daly (David Hemmings) who is a jazz musician that witnessed a murder from the top of an apartment building. With the help of a reporter (Daria Nicolodi) Marcus tries to find out who was the murderer while also being chased by the mysterious figure.
This movie is in every way a Giallo film. The violence is suspenseful and tries to keep a slow pace but when it finally shows gore, it gets extremely bloody. The camera work is both dynamic and well thought out as there a lot of great shots that compliment the setting. It has every cliche and trait that makes a giallo film like the over the top gore, dynamic visuals, leather gloved mysterious killer, and suspenseful writing. The soundtrack is also great as it is done by the band goblins who would do more soundtracks for Argento and other horror directors like George A Romero.
I rate this movie a 4 stars as it is a great Giallo film and perfectly represents everything from the genre into one amazing movie.
