Tasha I'm not reading anything NG at the moment but will be getting Slenderman: Online Obsession, Mental Illness, and the Violent Crime of Two Midwestern Girls starting in the next couple of weeks, published Aug 16.

Thanks, Trisha & Karen. I think I need to find a chunk of time to read instead of little spurts so that I can get into it more.

That one sounds really interesting, Tasha. I look forward to seeing what you think of it.

Star Gater (star-gater) | 21 comments Hi Ladies ... I have been reading NG, and I stopped scrolling back here. I cannot add anymore books to any list (I really am trying.). Finished My Little Brother 3.5* The issue ... I know I've read this before. Know as I can't document it. I searched briefly for a title change to no avail. The entire book was familiar.

Next: I put Woman of Light back on my shelf (pub in Sept). Four chapters, 30ish pages and sadly I'm not connecting. Have you read it?

And, me with currently 37 NG books am batting zero.

I started The Colony and like WofL I'm wondering what am I reading. I am old enough to remember the IRA, however thus far that is a line or two (30% or so). It's strange and the writing style is different.

So, of course I was determined to save the last couple of days. I like to do jigsaw puzzles while I listen. Next one I was choosing by cover, not publication date. More After the Break looked safe -- a listen, chuckle, eye roll, while I puzzle book. It is crudely written and the audio comes off as entitled not sincere. (30% or so).

Bottomline -- I'm not starting another, going to try my hardest not to procrastinate and finish these.

How is your reading?

I have read Woman of Light. It was a little odd at first because the first mc, first chapter, won't make sense in the beginning. Then it will open up to 2 timelines and 2 mc's. It was good until almost the end for me. I gave it 3 stars

I hope your next read it better!!

Trisha | 1580 comments My reading is going really good. Finally moved my percentage on Netgalley by 2 more points! woohoo!

I've cleaned up my shelves and really dug in to what I want to read next. I've also scheduled a bunch of buddies reads with my friends so I can get some of these old books off my TBR.

and I've bought a bunch of new books that I can't wait to read!

hoping to finish up:
My Imaginary Mary (Mary, #2) by Cynthia Hand

and starting:
A Burning Obsession (Abby Mullen #3) by Mike Omer Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson Things We Do in the Dark by Jennifer Hillier

message 306: by Star (new)

Star Gater (star-gater) | 21 comments I picked up Things We Do in the Dark from NG after seeing it on here.

Congrats on your 2 points.

message 307: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Nice Trisha!

Star, I hope you can get into those books and move them off your NG shelf, that will feel so good and hopefully worth the effort! Good luck :)

Tasha I have started At the Breakfast Table by Defne Suman and so far I'm already loving the writing and interested in the cast of characters I'm meeting. I loved The Silence of Scheherazade by Defne Suman for it's wonderful sense of place, the history I learned, the wonderfully drawn characters and the gorgeous writing. I'm hoping for more of the same here!

message 309: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 575 comments Tasha - I’m interested in what you think of At the Breakfast Table. I have it too, but wanted to read The Silence of Scheherazade first, which I’m currently reading. I’m about 50 pages in so far.

message 310: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I hope you like it as much as I did.

message 313: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'm currently reading, very slowly it feels like bc it's over 600 pages (!):

The Winners (Beartown, #3) by Fredrik Backman

It's got the feel of Beartown and less so of Us Against You so if you liked the first one better, as I did, you might like this one better as well. It's not a 5 star read but I'm enjoying it enough to probably end up giving it a solid 4 stars. It's taking me most of the month to read it as I have other reads going on as well.

message 314: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 2899 comments Mod
Thanks for that, Tasha! I got a widget, but put it on hold because I felt a little burnt out after the lat one, though I loved the first one. I wasn't sure I wanted to read 688 pages if it ended up being like book two.

message 315: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 575 comments I’m in the same camp, Tasha! I’ve been reading Nights of Plague for a while too - it’s 704 pages. I’m enjoying it but I’ve been busy so haven’t been able to read much.

Re: Fredrik Backman, I preferred Beartown over Us Against You as well.

Good luck on finishing The Winners!

That sounds like an intense read, Lilisa!

message 318: by Tasha (new)

Tasha For me it feels more like Beartown. I hope that will be the same for all of you too, lol.

Tasha good :)

message 321: by Tasha (last edited Sep 24, 2022 04:23AM) (new)

Tasha After I wrote that comment about The Winners being like Beartown, I thought more about it and my current reading 'relationship' with the book. I'm just over 60% in and I'm finding that my attention does gravitate towards other books but when I'm actually reading this one, I'm enjoying it. I read a review that said that book 3 really didn't need to happen and perhaps that's true. We do get a lot of reintroduction to those original characters and the storyline is more slower paced but I find the writing still really engaging. I say all this bc I'm not sure it's on par with Beartown but it definitely gives me more vibes of Beartown than Us Against Them. The main reason I say all this though is bc I think I may have given the impression that it's comparable to Beartown. I think this book will end up feeling too long for what it is but the writing is strong.

No worries, Tasha! lol I didn't accept the widget and too close to publication for such a chunky book to do so now. If I do read it, I will likely grab the audio at some point.

I don't really expect it to have the same impact as Beartown. I think the second book just felt like it had too much small town politics in it. Honestly, I don't even remember the second book, that's how little impact it had on me. So, if this one is more about the people and less about the town politics that will be good for me.

message 323: by Tasha (new)

Tasha No, there is still definitely small town politics involved. I would just try it on audio (or library) so there is no commitment if you don't like it.

I just finished Santa's Little Yelpers (Andy Carpenter, #26) by David Rosenfelt Santa's Little Yelpers. I really enjoy this series. my Santa's Little Yelpers review

I am now starting The Ex Wives by Jenna Kernan The Ex Wives.

Star Gater (star-gater) | 21 comments I enjoyed Andy and the Yelpers, my second in the series of 26. Has anyone read them all? I'm thinking my 2025 -- 2026 TBR is realistic. (Setting up my 2023 NY resolution). I digress ... I'm reading The Maze, not enjoying this.

I started on 23 and then went back, so I've read 1 & 2 and 23 through 26 now. (I know it's strange, lol). My hubby listened to 23 with me and enjoyed it so much that he went back and started at the beginning too. I think he is somewhere around 9 or 10 now and he has listened to a couple of the later ones with me too, but not this most recent one. The audios are great for road trips. I feel like the stories might get a little too repetitive if you listen to too may in a row, so it's taking a while for me to get through them. I do want to read them all though.

I've seen a few people now that didn't love The Maze now. I haven't read the series, so I don't have that one. Sorry you aren't enjoying it.

message 330: by Star (new)

Star Gater (star-gater) | 21 comments I understand.. the gimmick is fun once or twice a year, but would get really old quickly after two or three in a row. This is why I love this forum.

The Maze main is like Andy insofar as being dry and sarcastic however I think he is around Andy's age and is written like a 15-year-old boy. 150 pages in and I will finish it, only because its a NetGalley.

Vicki Willis | 871 comments I am reading What Have We Done by Alex Finlay What Have We Done and it has started fast and furious.
It is my kind of book with a group of characters who were once associated, but now it is 25 years later and they have dispersed into their own lives. I need to find the connection or what happened to get them all to where they are.
I just wanted to get a feel for it and I blew through 25%.

I almost grabbed that one, Vicki! I'll probably get it on Audible at some point. Glad you are loving it.
