Bea Pants suggests you pick up N. K. Jemisin's debut novel. "If you are missing the political machinations and betrayals of Game of Thrones and aren't sure if GRRM is going to finish the last book before he shuffles off his mortal coil, you should definitely check out The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms." (Cannonball Read 13)

Hudson Rains | 10 comments If it’s a big sweeping epic tale, then typically yes. If the story follows a small group of people, I can start an incomplete series.

Raven Black (blackraven6913) | 198 comments I prefer to start an already finished series. But if I know that it will finish relatively quickly or if you miss one or two you're okay and not too lost, then I don't mind starting an unfinished series.  Of course, I have found myself starting a series not realizing it was a series, and fell hard for it (Yes, looking at you Adventure Zone) and OH THE PAIN of waiting a year between editions!

For me, it's a size of the series thing. If it's 3 books, I love to be able to binge 3 books one after the other. If it's 15+ (looking at you Nalini Singh), I get too overwhelmed to start and need to read those as they come out.

Katie (faintingviolet) | 44 comments I think for me it has a lot to do with what genre the series is in... for mysteries I don't mind reading ones that are in progress but I've learned that I prefer to be able to burn through romance series relatively quickly so that sometimes means waiting for at least a few to be published before starting.
