I don't think you will be disappointed! I don't know if you have read any of her other books, but Quinn has a way of drawing you back to the time period that is wonderful.

The author layers multiple themes as the story focuses on the challenges students face in order to get an education as well as the lengths colleges will go to in order to receive donations from wealthy donors.

Alice | 3840 comments I finished The Gilded Shroud by Elizabeth Bailey 4 stars out of 5.  Ms. Bailey is a new to me author. I greatly enjoyed the books. Set in 1789 England, it is a historical mystery.  Her characters are excellent. The Dowger Marchioness reminds you a lot of Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey, feisty but compassionette. The there is not all that much historical other than referfences to American Revolution and unrest in France. I lot of good sleuthing. I have put book 2 on my WL.

Alice | 3840 comments I am reading A Rip Through Time A Rip Through Time (A Rip Through Time, #1) by Kelley Armstrong by Kelly Armstrong. First in a new series starts in present day Vancouver and ends up in 1869 Scotland. I have always enjoyed her books and this one is good too. Time travel is a bit iffy but the mystery is good in story is good.

Finished Dead Ever After by Charlaine Harris, the last book in the Southern Vampire (Sookie) series and applied it towards the July Mini and Popsugar Challenges. For the later, there is a tiger’s tail on the cover (prompt #4), and there is also a wolf and bats (so three creatures found at zoos). Now 34/50 for PS.

Deaths, an island with a history of murder, violence, superstition, child abuse, and a strong storm make this a disturbing and suspenseful story. The world-building was well-done and the premise was excellent.

Finished The Winter of Our Discontent by John Steinbeck, a classic group read for this month. A little plodding at times, but the pace seemed to pick up in part two, especially the last few chapters. Alas, does not seem to fit toward any of my challenges.

I like both time travel and mysteries. To have it combined and by such a good author sounds great. I will have to keep my eyes open for this one.

Listened to Destination Unknown by Agatha Christie yesterday. I found a free audiobook on YouTube that was only 3 hours 15 minutes long. This one is more suspense/espionage, not your typical Christie, but I did enjoy it.

Have also been reading I've Got Sand In All the Wrong Places by Lisa Scottoline and Francesca Serritella, one of their collection of personal essays. I’m about 3/4 of the way through it.

Alice | 3840 comments This morning I woke up early and finished The Book Woman's Daughter The Book Woman's Daughter (The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, #2) by Kim Michele Richardson Author: Kim Michele Richardson. I gave it 5 stars. Second book in series. The first book was excellent and so was this one. Really brought you deep into social issus of Appalacia in the 1950s. I I enjoyed learning about roles of women (Pack Horse librian, fire watchwather and frontier nurses). There is so much history in the USA that we know little about.. I highly recommend.

Alice | 3840 comments I finished Run Rose Run Run Rose Run by Dolly Parton by Dolly Parton and James Patternon. I am not much of a James Patterson fan but the idea of a book by Dolly Parton was intriguing. Surprisingly it was quite good. Quick read.

Teresa — I hope you enjoy Around the World in Eighty Days as much as I did!

I am currently reading The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, about 3/4 done. It’s actually quite a fast read and I’m hoping to finish today.

Dilemma: I wanted to use this for my last mini challenge prompt of “something that flies on the cover”. Though the aliens are not shown flying on the cover, I am trying to justify using it anyway as they did have to fly in order to get to Earth. Thoughts?

The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells

Heather - I LOVE Around the World in Eighty Days. If I have to pick a favorite book this is it. I read it usually once a year.

I read The War of the Worlds a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I've found most of H.G. Wells books fairly quick reads. The version of the book I read showed a flying saucer on the cover so I'd go for it and count it for the "something that flies" prompt.

I will admit I am a bit tired of books in occupied France during WWII, but I do very much enjoy Juliet Blackwell books. The story pulled me right in book.
