When You’re Not Reading a Cozy

Thanks!
Another non-cozy read, Ransom by Lois Duncan (published in 1972 as Five Were Missing). I remember reading this in middle school, but it’s been so long I had forgotten much of the plot, but as good as I remembered (view spoiler) .

Paranormal romantic suspense.
And another PopSugar prompt done — down to eleven. 😮
Spent the afternoon reading and watching Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare. I found an excellent and hilarious Lincoln Center production on YouTube and read along as I watched. This production starred Helen Hunt, Kyra Sedgwick and Paul Rudd — did not even recognize Rudd!
I originally planned to read Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides for the “gender identity” prop, but was put off by the fact its over 500 pages. Other people in the PS group had recommended Twelfth Night, and since it’s been more than a decade since I last read it, I opted for the much shorter reread.

This is a British crime drama / police procedural. The narrative is suspenseful with a creative, absorbing, complex, and well-paced plot with some twists that will keep a reader guessing. This is the fifth book in the series, and it is best read in order.

While I enjoyed this one and the premise was interesting, it didn’t quite deliver up to my expectations.

I read that back in 2011 and also gave it four stars. While I liked it, I’ve never felt inclined to continue the series.

Heather, I bought the second book while on my Alaskan cruise (when I read the first), so hopefully I'll get to it at some point.

This one has Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine in it, so it is a special treat.
Alway a good glimple into history with a good mystery.

Good to see that you liked it, Brenda. I have it out from the library right now, but I'm not sure I'll be able to finish it before it's due back. I've really been struggling to read bound books lately.
Read Oedipus Rex by Sophocles this afternoon, an August classic group read. First read this senior year of high school English, along with his other two Theban plays. While I had to read the third, Antigone, multiple times in college (in French and English), this was my first time revisiting Oedipus. Still reads fast, and easy to remember the plot. May reread the other two again later.
Favorite line:
“Oh, what anguish to be wise where wisdom is a loss!”

I hope you can fit it in Barb, it's a great read!

This is a random bit of trivia stuck in my brain. When I read Rita Mae Brown's memoir Rita Will: Memoir of a Literary Rabble-Rouser, she said that she learned Greek and had read the Greek tragedies in Greek. According to her it was well worth the effort and everyone should have this experience.

I remember enjoying those as a kid. I received the complete collection from "Santa" one year. It's still in my book collection.

This is a historical romance that combines romance and humor in a historical western setting. While the plot is straightforward, the book is full of laugh-out-loud humor as well as some more somber moments. The world-building was great, and the author captured the cultural lifestyles and portrayed them well.

This is what I would call "lite" horror with some dark humor. Overall, this was a well-plotted, moving, and clever story that built momentum, moved well (after the first 3 chapters, created a few startling moments, and built suspense as it moved to its dynamic conclusion and an epilogue that makes one think there will possibly be a second book.

I won this in a Goodreads Giveaway. It's a romantic suspense novel with plenty of danger, suspense and romance woven into the story. Overall, it had exciting scenes, compelling, but flawed characters, and some suspenseful moments.

Pam I'm curious. How do you work out your rating for your books?

Ditto Brenda's question.
I noticed a few or your recent reviews have different fraction stars (e.g., your note above). How do you assign your "point" stars. That is, why/how 4.05 or 3.78 rather than 4.25 or 3.75? Is it just how you feel at the time or do you have an algorithm or formula you use? I've done fractions, but usually in halves or quarters.
