PamG (lynguy1) | 977 comments I finished reading A Noble Cunning: The Countess and the Tower A Noble Cunning The Countess and the Tower by Patricia Bernstein by Patricia Bernstein.

My 3.19 rounded to 3 stars review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Patricia Bernstein brings to life the political and religious situation in Scotland and England. This novel is historical fiction set in the early 1700’s, but based on real events with names changed and fictional individuals added. Overall, the book was atmospheric and full of suspense. It is also very descriptive, which does a great job of giving readers a feeling of the time and place. However, it also slows the pace and adds to the instances of telling versus showing. Additionally, at the 95% point in the book, there is a fast jump in time with no transition.

This is the thirteenth book in the SWAT: Special Wolf Alpha Team paranormal romantic suspense series. As always, this author does a great job of bringing action, romance, and suspense to the story line.

I did a hybrid reading/listening of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffmann. This original telling of the holiday classic was an enjoyable way to spend a few hours today.

I’ve also been working on Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid for two weeks now, but between work and being sick I’ve not gotten much beyond the midway point. I’m finding it difficult to get into. I’m not a fan of biographies/celebrity interviews, so the writing style simply isn’t appealing to me. I *will* persevere and finish it this week, though, since I need it to complete a couple challenges.

I did it! I finished Daisy Jones & The Six, which means I have officially finished both the Popsugar Ultimate Reading Challenge (PS) and the Around the Year (ATY) reading challenge. 🤩

Now to decide how to finish out the year.... 🙂

Now you pick a book just because you want to, not because it fits a prompt or because someone else says you should read it :)

Barb — I’ve decided on a short (under 200 pages) Christmas book. It finishes off the Dec mini challenge, but is also what should be a short, quick, mindless read. 😄

Zermeena wrote: "Congratulations Heather! What challenges do you have lined up for 2023?"

Thank you! I have four challenges planned for the classics group that I also did (and completed) this year, including a short story challenge and classic bingo (I was two squares from a blackout this year) and I’m going to try both Popsugar and Around the Year again, with a goal of at least 30 books for each of those. As my schedule has recently changed, I’m going to set my Goodreads goal at 75 and increase in the fall if necessary. I know I won’t manage 150 books next year and I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself.

Karen (xkamx) | 547 comments As usual, when not reading cozies, I'm reading romance -- sweet to hot hot hot!

Among other reads, I spent the last part of the year reading (and rereading) Mari Carr series...

It started with the latest in her Italian Stallions series, Rough and Ready. The series involves Italian siblings and cousins who live in Philly. Some of the characters cross over in stories from her Wilder Irish series, so I revisited several of the books in that series. Which led me to rereading a couple from the original Irish series, Wild Irish.

I don't know how it caught my eye -- a freebie in a newsletter, I think -- but I then hit her Sparks in Texas series. That led me to her Big Easy series.

I have yet to be disappointed by anything of hers I read.

It is standalone, not part of the Maggie Hope series. Set in 1940 Los Angeles. Mother and daughter try to break Nazi sympathizer groups. Based on real people. Good so far.
