Robin P | 5753 comments I got this book through some kind of promotion, free Kindle books from cultures around the world, or maybe it was books in translation. I knew it was the story of a woman, so at first I was disappointed that it was all told by men, and took place before, during and after WWII in China. So there was quite a bit of violence and suffering. But the story grew on me and the young woman became a strong character. And it was interesting to read a book by someone from China, written in Chinese and translated, as opposed to one by an American or Chinese-American author.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11071 comments I have this one too, and it's also on kindle unlimited. It amazes me that there are still so many WWII books written today that focus on Europe, but there are relatively few about the pacific side, and the Japanese wars before it. White Chrysanthemum was very powerful (about Korea and Japan). I hope we see more.
