Ha ha, I like that name too! The weather was spectacular as always, but it was extraordinarily busy. My husband does consulting for a med school down there, and we go fairly often . . .I've never seen it quite like this.

We had so much fun there

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11071 comments The first few pages of historical romance are all regency, with a couple Outlander and Outlander wannabees. Between Regency and beach reads I'm way over my quota of romance this year.

You are very welcome, I hope you had a good holiday!

Booknblues | 12072 comments Interesting choices!
I voted. Oddly one of these closely aligns with what I feel like reading next month. It is also the one which feels the most unlikely, so I threw all I could at it.

One I really do not want and have no idea what I would read.

message 8: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 16, 2021 09:33AM) (new)

I've hopefully just tagged An Arabian Journey: One Man's Quest Through the Heart of the Middle East as travelogue to make it up to 5 people, for others to use in case it wins!

message 9: by NancyJ (last edited Aug 16, 2021 09:49AM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11071 comments Based on the first page of the tag lists I already have a good option for Travelogue and made me cry.

Made me cry-
Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is my local book club's pick for September. I'll bet her other books - Daisy Jones and Malibu Rising will be there too. I don't remember crying when I read Invisible Life of Addie Larue. A Thousand Splendid Suns is one of my favorite books of all times. I pray for the girls in Afghanistan that history won't repeat itself.

For Travelogue I would read Seven Years in Tibet.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12571 comments Well, The Wheel of Fortune Tags has not been good for me this year. Another month where I really don't care for any of them. *heavy sigh* I have been in a terrible reading slump all summer long and am finally coming out of it. I was hoping for...I don't know what, but not any of these. LoL. My firm rule for the monthly tag is to pull from TBR and I don't have much for any of them.

I am not a Romance fan, though I do have a lot of books on that list that I have read. There is one there on the list, Into the Wilderness, which is the first in a series and I have not read the last one. Really excellent HF story that has a lot more than romance in it. Highly recommended if you love a good long series.

Some of the books on "made me cry", duh? why? Though I do have some good recommendations for this tag, again only one on the TBR Rule of Wolves, which I doubt will make me cry, which is a good thing!

And the final one...which because of FTS will probably win. This
challenge is starting to remind me of Polls, where I was reading books I really did not want to read-ugh! However, I have a lot on the TBR that would fit.

How's a gal to vote? @BnB, message me with your vote, perhaps I can help swing it your way

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

Voted, and even though I'm doing fts I haven't chosen the obvious one for the challenge! Made me cry had the most on my tbr, but could cope with historical romance.

message 13: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5753 comments Historical romance does overlap too much with Regency. I love that genre but would like more variety. And Made Me Cry sounds a lot like Family Drama. I hardly ever read Travelogues, so I'm not sure what I'll vote for.

message 14: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments Seriously? I'm not ready for september. Sincerely, a person born way too far from equator for her own liking. Today I had to wear a jacket, and sandals were on the verge of being too cold. Many people probably will think it was too cold for that and bare legs

message 15: by Karin (last edited Aug 16, 2021 10:14AM) (new)

Karin | 9225 comments Wow, what an interesting but odd combination of tags! But travelogue screams boring to me. I don't read them. Ever.

Historical romance is hysterical - ly close to the Regency tag we had recently.

This set of tags almost makes me want to cry this month ;).

I'll have to mull this over.

No comment! it is still in the 95-105 range here in the Sacramento Valley.

message 18: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15533 comments Just want to remind everyone that while there is a tendancy to think and define 'romance' as love and kisses stories only, that is far from accurate. Adventure stories like King Solomon's Mines are considered romances. Ditto King Arthur stories.
Many historical fiction and even alternative fiction like She Who Became the Sun would fit an historical romance tag.

Rules also don't require you to choose from the GR lists.

That said, though my TBR is loaded with books that fit IMHO historical romance, I am pretty sure I will not be in the mood for them in September because just about all my reading for last 3 months has fit that description, and I am ending that spree with the 1,474 page A Suitable Boy which I am reading and loving now. Which absolutely would fit historical romance though I doubt many tagged it such.

I will want a change of pace.

message 19: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15533 comments Make Me Cry is the problem tag I think.

I cry easily, and there have been many books that have had me cry at some point, of all genres. Lots recently too. However, I don't seek out books that are dubbed 'make me cry'. And from past experience filling prompts in other group challenges like Popsugar for reading a book that makes me cry, nothing makes me cry! It has to sneak up on me.

If someone tells me a book will make me cry, it either doesn't because I have put up emotional barriers after being warned, or it is the type of depressing dark story I just don't ever want or need to read.

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments Welcome back from A-ROO-buh, Anita!

Without looking at the GR lists I went with "made me cry" because I feel like this tag will be broad. I suspect I won't be made to cry, but I'd like to give it a shot *^_^*

message 22: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments @temperatures, scrambling to find the converter, wow that's hot! This morning it was 13C / 55F and very windy, still relatively pleasant and you're able to wear your summer clothes (with an extra layer added - the key to Danish weather is layers to take on and off. Plus rain and wind gear of course). It just felt like autumn and winter was coming.

message 23: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments If we end up with "made me cry" there are quite a few good children's and YA books I can recommend.

Johanne, it was 57F Thursday morning here... though it's warmed up a bit since. We're a bit farther south than you but not much ... located at 43°10′49″N 87°54′17″W

As for sandals ... I wear them as long as daylight savings time is in effect. I've been known to wear them in the snow. I'm paying for pedicures, I'm gonna show off my toes!

message 27: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12924 comments You know I’m just betting that there’s so many great historical fiction novels out there, but if you could just get past the Regency like ones that are upfront, that most of us are going to have something incredibly palatable on our TBR’s. I could name a few that I’m sure would qualify. As usual, I can comment more once I’ve done my research. But I wouldn’t just write it off as only Regency style. Not yet!

message 28: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3143 comments I have to say that I love travelogues- memoirs and travel all in one!

Made me cry is on my list of storylines that I avoid. I need to catch up on all the great threads this month but drowning in work and also birthday visitors as another Leo in the group.

message 29: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15533 comments Travelogue is a favorite of mine and I have tons in my TBR, and have read many.

Would also make for fun Pursue It! clues....let's not forget that.

message 30: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments I'm also pretty stubborn about wearing sandals as long as possible. It's just so definite that summer is over when you stop wearing them.

message 31: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Jen K, I love them too! I haven’t read any in a bit but I just found one about traveling solo that looks interesting! I am sure I would find many many more.

I may read it next month either way. Lol

Carson City - we have the heat and the smoke from the fires.

So I'm in Woodland, west of Sacramento. Because we are south and west of most of the fires, our AQI hasn't been to bad for the most part. We have had days were it is quite bad though.

message 39: by Barbara M (new)

Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2596 comments I'm like Theresa, I like to read from my TBR for the tag. Although it really hasn't shrunk it much as I keep adding! I was surprised to find a couple of Travelogue books I could use although non-fiction is not my usual go to genre.

I actually have quite a few books in the Made Me Cry category and some I wouldn't mind reading soon.

What really surprised me was I had so few in my Historical Romance and I agree that its really close to the Regency tag which we only just finished last month.

So I guess that decides it for me.

message 40: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments I think I read approximately a book a month that makes me cry. I once did that on a slow day in the library. A patron came while I was sniffling and trying to dry my eyes, and she was all concerned. I was like "I'm alright, I'm just reading this book with a girl who gets bullied". She looked at me oddly and I haven't read sad books at work since (I don't really have time to read at all at work, this was the beginning of my first job where I didn't yet have a lot of responsibilities).

message 41: by forsanolim (new)

forsanolim | 526 comments I LOVE travelogues! I've had Underland: A Deep Time Journey and Sovietistan: Travels in Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan (the latter since before it was translated into English) on my radar for a while, as well as The Salt Path. Besides that, I'm not sure - I have no intention of seeking out especially sad books, but I also don't want to read any more regency romance (though other things would probably technically fit the tag as well).

Oooh, I'm curious what book you're looking at. I might need to check that one out, too!

I am hoping for travelogue, though I'm sure I'll have something that will fit any of them.

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

The Salt Path is brilliant and local to me. If travelogue wins and any of you read it, I'm particularly pleased whenever Poole is mentioned!

message 47: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments @Johanne — I cry at EVERYTHING when it comes to books! (And movies) I have rolled up to work so many times with red eyes because of my audiobook on the commute in, or cried in an airport/on a plane. 😂

message 48: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments @Cindy — it is Alone Time by Rosenbloom.

message 49: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments I was getting ready to start The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba, but maybe I will hold that for a bit to see if historical romance is selected.

I also have Crying on H Mart on deck but maybe I will hold that to see if made me cry is selected. I guarantee that one will make me bawl. I have already committed to only reading it in the privacy of my own home when I have no possible zoom meeting. Lol

I tend to cry more at the happy or hopeful resolutions than at the sad parts. I sometimes get angry at those, feeling the author is manipulating me by piling on misery. In The Art of Racing in the Rain, all the problems and drama didn't make me cry, but the tender ending did.
