I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, published in 1969, is one of Maya Angelou’s most artful works. Angelou is a powerful woman, known for her memoirs, poetry, and civil rights activism. IKWTCBS is one of many autobiographies, covering Angelou’s early life and childhood. Many can learn valuable lessons and gain insight from her experiences and writing.

Angelou is not afraid to share some of the more traumatic experiences involving the topics of bigotry, racism, and rape. This openness allows any reader to connect with Angelou and see from her point of view growing up. Her storytelling is simple yet honest.

IKWTCBS is incredibly touching and illuminating to many important subjects regarding humanity and identity, I’d recommend it to all. 5/5 stars.
