Isn't this why Holmes is liked?

Sherlock Holmes is a super hero whose power is his intellect. If he ever uses violence, it's in self defense. The bad guys are put in jail and justice is done by the mind of Holmes. Isn't this why he is liked?

Of course he is expert in forms of self defense, but again only to protect himself. If you make Holmes a bully, brawler, or mean, aren't you getting away from what makes Holmes great?

Indeed, Demetrius. However, what are you getting at exactly? Are you making a reference to a particular adaptation, or just stating an observation?

I'd also like to add that there are many other reasons for why Holmes is universally liked, not just because he doesn't use violence save in self-defense. :)

The reason Holmes was so liked has a lot more to do with just his character. Look at the times when it was written. They were not the best of times for the people and the Strand published huge pages filled with stories that became the most beloved because it was something that took away from everything they were going thru at the time. Later, it became about more about the character although he was well beloved then, but not just because of his character.
