Karly | 342 comments Hi There!

Had a tougher time focusing this month on more traditional reads - had a lot going on and once again fell into graphic novels for escapism and the gratification of a quick read.

Frick Madison - The Frick Collection. 5 stars. Museum catalog - lots of photos!

Book Nerd - Holly Maguire. 5 stars

Batman: Hush, Vols. 1 & 2 - Jeph Loeb. Both 5 stars.

The Moonstone - Wilkie Collins. 2 stars. Had to use audio for this, and admittedly couldn’t really pay attention and get into it even with the audio. Likely more my distraction then the content of the story.

Batman Arkham: Poison Ivy - Gerry Conway. 4 stars

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, Vol. 1 Fortune and Fate - Alyssa Wong. 4 stars.

The World of All Souls: A Complete Guide to A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and The Book of Life - Deborah Harkness. 3 stars. Although I love the novels and the world of All Souls, this guide as really hard to get through, took me almost half of August. Reads like a history, reference text.

Bloodless - Preston & Child. 4 stars. I always love a Pendergast story.

Happy Reading!

Bonnie Glad you have a plan for when you can't get into traditional reading. Mine is to go to cozies/short contemporary novels.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16931 comments Karly: nice variety of graphic novels and other books! When I can't get into reading traditional books I fall back on podcasts. :) Whatever it takes. Book Nerd looks fun.

Karly | 342 comments Podcasts are definitely helping as well!

I’ve been meaning to get into cozy mysteries at some point but don’t know where to start. Yes me know if you have any recommendations!

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9490 comments Karly, I had The Moonstone on my Determination List for the longest time and finally listened to it a few years ago. I really enjoyed but it is true that you needed to focus--lots of characters and changes of location.

I love the All Souls series (read the books and currently watching it on TV, very good) but I have to say I think I would have the same reaction to the "complete guide." Think I'll avoid that.

I've never gotten into graphic novels but I haven't given up. There was a good Tom Hanks mystery film based on a graphic novel -- Road to Perdition I think -- and I tried to read it but it takes time to adjust to the visual style and I didn't get through. This makes me want to try again. Is there a graphic novel or series that you would recommend for mystery/thriller fans?

Karly | 342 comments I will have to check out Road to Perdition!

For more graphic novels with a mystery/thriller vibe, I would say Watchmen is always a good place to start, one of the most acclaimed as well and is what got me into graphic novels. Also if you want to go the superhero type route, I would recommend Batman: The Long Halloween. This is loosely what Christopher Nolan used as inspiration for the Dark Night movie, plus Batman at his core is a detective. This one in particular has a murder mystery that goes through his rogues gallery in a fun way.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9490 comments Good suggestions, Karly! Where do you get your graphic novels?

Karly | 342 comments Usually Barnes and Noble! Unless it’s something more obscure then I’ll find it online but B&n usually has the big titles. A good place to start!
