Book Check-In Thread

Challenge rules:
*Books must be over 100 pages
*No graphic novels, poetry or cookbooks allowed.
*Follow your own time zone. If you finish the book between the theme dates in your time zone, it counts.
*You must be able to justify how your book fits the theme. Example: If the theme is cats, then your book can have a cat on the cover, a cat in the book, can be all about cats, etc. If you can justify it, then it will work. Let's keep this easy.

Themes:
Oct 1-9 Witches
Oct 10-16 Vampires
Oct 17-23 Werewolves
Oct 24-31 Zombies

D.L. Checking in. Hey everybody!

message 5: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 112 comments Hi DL! good to meet you :)

You ready for this creepy challenge?! Planned out your books for each week already?

As I understnad it, we can start reading for them now, provided we don't finish until 1 October! My witches line up includes one which I think will be aslow read, so I might start that now. The others I've picked are Pratchett, which I know will go fast.

I am struggling a bit with the Werewolf week - nothing pencilled in there at all yet :(

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3791 comments Howdy :)

I'm just down for one a week, as especially the zombie one is going to be hard to fill (plus wheels will be happening and who knows what'll happen there. Oh wait, there are a few on this team that do, lol).

I've got my favourite King, The Talisman lined up for werewolves. It's been more than 20 years since I last read it, so here's hoping it holds up!

message 7: by Kaley (last edited Sep 29, 2021 06:51AM) (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 303 comments Hi team!!

I picked out a few witchy books yesterday as contenders for week one . . . and that's as far as I made it into planning. I probably should start looking now at the rest of the weeks, especially because I get most of my books from the library and might have to contend with a hold list, but I am such a mood reader that I try not to plan books too much ahead of time.

I don't think I'll have too much trouble though aside from zombies. I can only think of one zombie book I have ever read! I mostly have only read romance the last few years and just started dabbling back into fantasy / supernatural / paranormal stuff recently, so I'm excited to re-broaden my horizons!

message 8: by Pasty Hag (new)

Pasty Hag | 88 comments Hi fellow Hob Goblins! Excited for this challenge. I'm aiming for 2 books/week and have quite a few books picked out for each theme--I always have a hard time deciding what to read!

If anyone is stuck and wants a fun read, I recommend A Night in the Lonesome October. It has a character that fits each theme--witches, vampires, werewolves, the undead/zombie. I read it every year since it's Halloween-y but not gruesome, just fun.

Zeejane, the 1001 Books challenge sounds so cool! I'm trying to read more outside of my comfort zone and read more classics.

message 9: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 112 comments @Beatrice - the rec was immediately added to my list. The Z author might be very sad-making, what with wheel requirements though. hate a wasted tricky letter book!

message 10: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3791 comments I'm on a mission to read the 1001 too, though I'm doing the combined list of all 4 editions, which is 1316 books. I'm currently at 261, so still have more than 1001 to go! lol.

None of the books I have lined up for this challenge are on the list :D

message 11: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3791 comments I recently read Nine Princes in Amber by Zelazny. If it comes to it, I can continue the series for wheel, lol.

message 12: by Pasty Hag (new)

Pasty Hag | 88 comments @Cat--Sorry, what is the 'wheel'? I hope you like the book whether its for the challenge or sometime in the future; it's a personal favorite :)

message 13: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 303 comments Someone recommended These Witches Don't Burn to me for this challenge and it has an I author … trying to figure out if I can squeeze it in between the few hours that the witches theme for this and the first day of Wheel overlap 😂

(Guess I’ll just wait and see what my future team’s first word is so I know if I need to or not)

message 14: by D.L. (last edited Sep 29, 2021 06:31PM) (new)

D.L. Hey, friends. The zombie category is absolutely the hardest to fill I think. Check Amazon for freebies if you can. I, fortunately, have an old Harlequin romance sitting around called Zombie Moon that fits the bill. I also claimed this book (It All Started) a while ago when it was free on Amazon because the author friended me a few years back.

message 20: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 178 comments Looking forward to this! I haven't put my lists together but will do it soon. I have several Zombie recommendations if folks need them and I've read 2 recent books that were good that deal with witch trials, either as the topic or in the past.

I need to find a good witch book fast to start with. I'd love recommendations and will check out the few listed above.

message 21: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 112 comments uh-oh! that's the start of a very dangerous slope Zeejane! you'll be like so many of us, following the various big name challenges around, unable to read an I book at the wrong time of year :)

Haha the books I read per month from February-July during Uno/Tower Teams versus the books I read per month in this last month, for example…. VASTLY different 🤪

message 27: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 112 comments It's funny how sometimes you end up reading two books at the same time that have serendipitous connections. I've got that right now, and the connections are also really helping me read them quicker.

It's Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants and The Winter Witch, with the memoir ruminating on our need to connect at a personal level with the natural world, even seeing trees as entities not things which picks out Morgana's close connection with nature in a way that makes it more accessible to read. I tried to read the Winter Witch a while ago and couldn't get into it; this time, with Sweetgrass as a partner, I'm flying through it!

How are you liking it? I picked it as my October book from Book of the Month so I'm hoping it's good! And hoping it gets here in time to read it for the witches week...

It's a light second chance romance. I'm enjoying it so far. It has really a lot of romance though.

Happy October and happy reading, everyone!

October is my favorite month.

message 45: by Kate (new)

Kate (kcbond) | 27 comments Starting my second today- Witches by Stacy Schiff (sorry on the app so no linking). It’s non-fiction about the Salem Witch trials.

Cat (cat_uk) | 112 comments Kate wrote: "Starting my second today- Witches by Stacy Schiff (sorry on the app so no linking). It’s non-fiction about the Salem Witch trials."

that sounds interesting Kate. Schiff does narrative non-fiction typically, right? wearing the research light?

message 47: by Kate (new)

Kate (kcbond) | 27 comments Yes, it’s definitely light on the research- although it’s still there. It’s more akin to Erik Larson (Devil in the White City, etc) than hard-hitting academic history.

Karen (karinlib) | 2108 comments I changed my book for the week. I am going to read The Witching Hour by Anne Rice

I loved that series back in the day. Been meaning to re-read for a decade and a half or so, lol.

message 50: by D.L. (new)

D.L. ^^ The Witching Hour is super thick. We'll get major points with that! haha

I just checked in my first book. I'll start book 2 in the morning :)
