NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11071 comments I just read this on the moderator support group. The new policy includes messages between moderators and members, so if you've tried to DM members or moderators, you might have come across this problem already. I don't know if this is a done deal, a misunderstanding, or just an idea.

It's just dumb luck that I saw this message tonight, so please share this with other groups and moderators to make people aware. If a moderator hasn't already signed up to join the moderator support group, I'm not sure their request to join will even get through right now.

Shaz | 34 commentsJust in case you are wondering why things seem so quiet, or why you are receiving friend requests rather than PMs from members in your group, well here's the answer: Goodreads has changed everyone's privacy settings. Yes, without notice everyone's settings have been changed. Now you will only be able to receive PMs from friends, unless you change them back again of course.

I'm assuming they did this in a (misguided) attempt to combat spam, hoping everyone would think they'd found a way to stop the spammers from joining. However as a Mod I personally feel I need to be able to be reachable by the members of my group. And it helps to be able to PM a member who either needs assistance, or is somewhat misbehaving but doesn't really need to be called out in the group as such. I just thought you might like to let your members know what has happened or at least have an answer for them if it's asked in the group.
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

They also discussed outside links and pictures. I don't know if surveys would be affected by this.

I don't think I ever noticed a Spam direct message, but I've received some weird friend requests. I ask a simple question now to anyone who sends a friend request - Something like "how do we know each other." BTW, if you'd like to friend me, "PBT" is all you need to say. If it still works that is.

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Thanks for the head's up, Nancy.

If anyone needs to message me, please just request to be my friend and say that you are in PBT and we'll be good to go!

Hi Nicole! I tried both and neither worked. It didn't even offer the option of a message when clicking on "add friend". I left a message on the PBT Fly the Skies September thread instead. :)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Jen K, it wouldn't even let you add me as a friend? I just requested to be your friend.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8414 comments I'd suggest that EVERYONE send a message to goodreads regarding this. You'll have to go to the HELP pages (which by the way I cannot link to at all any more because the HELP is outside of goodreads and they've disabled ALL external links ... not just html)

BUT .. you can click on the HELP link at the very bottom of this page and go from there. It's a bit convoluted (if memory serves .. haven't tried it today), but there is a way to "contact us" and get a form to send an emgil to GR support. SHEESH

I went into my settings to allow friend requests and PMs and got it! So complicated!

No, it let me click "add friend" multiple times but nothing happened. Ah well, great to be friends with you now!

Amy | 12921 comments So we all need to go Into our settings to make sure that new friend requests or enabled? Or we have to do that every time we think someone might be requesting us? Don’t forget for us few low tech folks, This stuff needs to be explained kindergarten style. Like someone let me know if there’s anything I actually need to do.

Go into your profile ACCOUNT SETTINGS, Amy.
You'll see Profile Settings Emails Feeds ....(etc) at the top
Click on the SETTINGS.
Scroll down to Who Can Send Me Private Messages
click on "ANYONE"

I moderate several groups. I really do NOT want to be friends with thousands of members just so I can send them a blast message about a new poll, or challenge.

Or, Nicole, you can change your privacy settings to allow PM from anyone (which it probably was previously ... that allows any PBT member to message you, not just those who requested your friendship).

Amy | 12921 comments Wow, Tessa! That was fabulous! I did it in a couple of seconds! Although I had to laugh at myself. You did such a good job explaining it Kindergarten style. And then I was like, where do I find my settings? A couple more of those "I don't get it, where is it...." But ultimately within a minute, I was able to get right to the place. I changed it. So I'm good. Hopefully those instructions help others as well.

Robin P | 5745 comments Another concerning thing is that some people are finding they can't post any outside links, even the full url. Not sure if that's temporary or what. GR is trying to control spam but this isn't the way!

message 13: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15524 comments I just checked my settings and nothing has changed - -- GR changed nothing. At least not yet.

Of course now I will have to see about PM'g someone.

message 14: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15524 comments On second thought, I just realized my settings page had a message on the bottom that page did not load properly please reload.

I'm ignoring it for now. Not in a head space to deal with GR screw ups right now!

I was able to change my setting, and it stayed even after logging out and then back in again.

This is what I've done. Thanks for the instructions on where to go to do that, BC.

That being said, I am happy to be "friends" with anyone here, as well. :-)
