Goodreads has just changed every user's privacy settings so that only friends can send them private messages. This is a problem if you rely on receiving private messages to let you know when to vote on a poll or what the new group read of the month is. Because I'm not friends with every member of the group, this means I can no longer send a group message and expect everyone to receive it.

Apparently you can change the setting back and I would recommend that you do so. Go to your profile, click edit profile, choose settings tab and under privacy settings there is a question about who can send you private messages. Change it back to "everyone" .

Fortunately, after many complaints from group moderators, Goodreads has made another change which will allow group moderators to send a broadcast message to all group members whether they are friends or not.

If you want to be able to receive individual private messages from non-friends, you will need to go to your profile, to the settings tab, and change the setting which controls who can send you private messages. Whether you make this change is up to you, but I can tell you that I have changed my settings, so you can send messages to me without our being Goodreads friends.
